Brienne hasn't really done much other than make vows she hasn't been able to keep up until now though, would be a bit pointless to kill her off - she's not a minor enough character for that to make sense imo? Seems like she should have more purpose than that. Stannis on the other hand has had a lot of action and failure and has now sunk as low as it's possible to go and then failed some more - it's time for him to die because he's useless and shit. So either she killed him there or she changed her mind at the last second and he'll have a chance to (somewhat) redeem himself maybe?

 

 

Given this shows' habit of breaking expectations it's not safe to assume things in terms of characters' purpose or the story's overall direction. At this point it'd be safer to predict something on the basis that it doesn't make sense.

 

So Brienne killed Stannis just before a branch fell from the tree, hit her on the head and now she has amnesia. All she has left is the vague sense of purpose of avenging stannis (who she killed, but doesn't remember).

 

 

That was in the back of my mind while typing to be honest, but at the end of the day this is still a story and it has to have some kind of a point(!). Otherwise George may as well just say 'fuck it' and end up killing everyone in really stupid unexpected ways that make no narrative sense

This is exactly where i think he is going. This show is getting too dark for me, really wtf, give me something life affirming to latch on to, you're not making soapies for the denizens of hell, then again maybe that is his target market.

Well there was that part in the finale where Myrcella accepted Jaime as her father and showed him some daughterly love. That was a nice life affirming moment.

Will there be a counter to this via popular uprising, seeing the full size finally Lannisters exit the show, jamie putting up a valiant fight but being no match without his fighting arm.

They're just big lizards so far. But what you were talking about is a touch more juicy, and that northlands thing too, i dig that stuff, even if i despise the concept of zombies, at least these are more risen dead than walking. With ice magic necromancers to boot.

yeah. :) starks are one the oldest houses, if not oldest, there is. i agreed, zombies are kind of over used. but there's one thing i have learned about martins book is that nothing is simple: thinking of nature of the story so far, they're not going to be just 'zombies' or 'white walkers'. it wouldn't fit in the story. there's been some speculations that white walkers do have their own culture etc. and are very reclusive, nobody knows anything about them. other than they know how to raise the dead. also it's been speculated that it was the white walkers who build the wall to keep humans out of their realm. no man can build that big of a structure, it's had to be some other being.

but those are just speculations. :)

That wall thing might be right, then it was repurposed after some apocalypse befell those in the northlands. It's more likely thought that it was built by than fallen civilisation that i can't remember the name of now where all the stone skin people get sent to the ruins of. Only five more seasons to drag through before we find out, someone should wikileak the in case GRR dies shownotes.

Recently in a GRRM-approved post-show discussion thing (Thronecast) they said it was humans who built it, with the assistance of giants.

ahh giants, well that explains it without magic or magic technology. But giants were stuck on the otherside of the wall thereafter.

They also said it's enchanted. So magic too.
