did a course on it, but was to lazy to program it myself. the coding itself is not the most difficult part. it's translating the problem you want to solve into "genes" which makes it difficult. kind of an art really. and i'm not nearly a master chef at it. not even close, i can tell you that!

anyone ever programmed a genetic algorithm ?

i played around with genetic algorithms for a bit but lost interest cause i was hoping it would come up with surprising phenotypes when in fact it did not.

What i did was a midi sequencer which would evolve/warp patterns toward a target pattern. Sounded kind of meh most of the time, much like many of the evolving cars here fail early on.

I reckon it gets more interesting when you write genetic software, i.e. let the genes do more than just parameter tweaking..?

i.e. how that one guy did in the early 90s, who let lifeforms compete through their gentically evolving propulsion systems... now i just wanted to google that youtube video and stumbled on this app:

looks pretty good!

goddamn that shit is addicting.

No one's mentioned the satellite antennas that nasa designed using genetic algorithms. You'd think that the perfect shape for an antenna would be something, well, perfect, like a straight line, or a triangle, or the same shape as the waveform of interest or something like that. That's the bias our human brains would brain to the process anyway.

But the algorithms came up with this fucked up shit as the best designs:

version 3 is exciting. i've been running it since this morning (on generation 42 now) and my best cars have been plateauing at 930.7 for a while now. i'm hoping one of those bad boys manages to break through by the time i finish work, otherwise i'm copying the genome and letting him have another stab at it tomorrow.
