SR4
i think the US is so indoctrinated/obsessed with its own apparent superiority over everything else on earth that it will take nothing short of catastrophic unemployment, starvation, and outright dictatorial moves by the govt. im cynical though.....the media stranglehold over people in this country is much more efficient than most give credit for. as Chomsky said, the US govt's use of propaganda is probably the most efficient and effective in all of history. SR4
what chen said is pretty much in line with what im saying. also, i think ultimately if something that serious did effect the US populace, I don't think it would automatically result in some sort of unified revolt out of similar lots in life....i can definitely see something akin to a second civil war occurring...though not necessarily in a manner commonly befitting the Western worlds' idea of a civil war... case in point, think about all of the Red state Palin supporters that claim to be against big government but support incredible amounts of spending towards a war machine while at the same time stockpiling guns and fueling the paranoia that "the liberals" are out to get them. Add that to economic chaos and their being disgruntled (which honestly is probably far more telling of what will happen then others affected, they have most of the anger, are easily manipulated and angry at the rest of the "leftist" populace AND armed...sometimes with militia/military experience...i could easily see an inter-bloodbath and I dont think that would end well for anyone not in that camp already....the odds of them siding with a government to impose some sort of pseudo-fascist theocracy seems more likely than most other ends. i actually know a ton of people around where i live, one in particular openly told me that if there was a civil war brewing, id be one of the first to be shot because my idealism and "elitist nonsense" threatens their right to life and their own beliefs. maybe that seems overblown, but its enough to be disturbing that a colleague and many others nearby with a like mindset sincerely believe that non-Tea Party supporters need to die. We rank #1 in the world above Iran and China, you will only hear the term 'prison industrial complex' or reforming our prison system from 'extremely left radical' public figures and writers. pretty sad but true and lumpenprol if you have hope for American's will to revolt if shit gets really bad, i think you've just been away from America too long a good thing to get away from the ignorance for a little bit but it's all too easy to forget just dumb america is. lumpenprol
edit: in reply to awepittance eh, people are people, same needs and desires, you can't get dumber no matter how much you try (and sadly education doesn't make you smarter, only arguably more civilized). Push people too much and they'll push back. I also disagree when it comes to framing things as "the US govt has the best propaganda machine in history." Seems a lot of the "propaganda" is simply supply and demand, telling people what they want to hear (eg Fox news..of course I realize this is a kind of feedback loop). If we fall hard, it'll be because we've been complicit in our own downfall. Which I guess the Germans were too, but the difference is our "propaganda" is some weird fusion of big business influencing both popular sentiment and elected officials, lowest-common-denominator pandering, celebrity, the desire for gladiatorial spectacle, etc etc. Edited January 31, 2011 by lumpenprol Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Hide lumpenprol's signature Hide all signatures After this I listened to geogaddi and I didn't like it, I was quite vomitting at some tracks, I realized they were too crazy for my ears, they took too much acid to play music I stupidly thought (cliché of psyché music) But I knew this album was a kind of big forest where I just wasn't able to go inside. - lost cloud I was in US tjis summer, and eat in KFC.
