AFX at Bloc 2011

Brilliant atmospherics there... can't wait for dublin 11. Nicely captured phresh!

Classic sample from "this is your life" snuck in there too! Didn't Aphex slip that one in a set back in the early days? I know he did "grandstand" (bloc09) and "countdown" too.....any other tv show themes?

looks like he was using two laptops? i'm still wondering what his setup is. first i clearly said he uses traktor, but some of the mixes are too "bad" (well just if he's using beatgrids). also he's using some external effects i guess. to me it seems like he's still beatmatching only by ear, or maybe it's a mixture.

simple, one of the laptops is running his video shit (processing it anyways) the other is him on Traktor

he uses particular effects in Traktor quite a lot in his sets, particularly beat stretch (he'll hold the note out too and let it grind out as he brings in the next track - if you spend enough time fucking with shit in Traktor you see this is a pretty sweet thing to do)

then just some beatmasher 2, it isn't complicated... what do you mean by "bad" mixes? bad in the sense of off timing (because I didn't hear him screw up) or bad in the sense of levels being off or something (which people have complained about but they seemed fine to me :S)

well i don't think the visual shit is running on one of the laptops. think the guys behind the crowd are responsible for that.

by "bad" i just mean that you can clearly hear he's correcting tempo during the mix itself with pitch bend etc. that's alright, but i'm wondering why he's doing that. with beatgrids in traktor it would sync up perfect all the time. so maybe he's not using this feature (it's really hard to grid some tracks, still a pain for me) or his dj software is another one and he's still beatmatching the classic way .

One guy at the front of the barrier with a camera... all the effects I believe are running as the laptop gathers the footage of the camera and projects it onto the screens in real time, There is also the Xbox Kinect that Afx uses at the front. The crowd effects look like a patch he made in After Effects or something, I don't know any cameras that do it inbuilt without the aid of a computer.... maybe I'm missing something here :P

sometimes genuinely in Traktor though the "sync" button is a lie and it's just better to go by ear and your own personal timing (I'm willing to say IT IS Traktor he's using because I recognise the effects and how he is twisting them from my own use of the program. I'd be surprised if it wasn't)

he generally likes to keep a few select sounds from a track on cue first, tap the cue a few times (for example the track Ecstasy (jam city refix) he had his finger on the cue and hit the string note several times before actually pressing cup and letting it run - so I'd guess he's just doing it by ear- which is pretty nifty in his own way as he introduces an element of the tune he will play before letting it run so it sounds better and more adjusted when it actually comes in :) )

well don't know, always thought weirdcore is processing all the stuff ^^.

of course the sync button can be a lie, but not if your sure that your tracks are gridded correctly (so they can't get out of sync). without it it's not really a good idea to rely on it. gridding tracks can be real pain, so maybe he's just lazy! in traktor pro for example effects are bound to the grid tempo, and that pisses me off... i'm quite forced to use the older version traktor 3. so if you put an effect on an ungridded track it sounds awful in pro...

i'm sorry i think we're drifting out of topic, maybe i'll pm you about traktor !

all I know from Phresch's video is Ramadanman - Work Them and Jam City - Ecstasy Remix.

I think there were guys at the back doing the visuals, I noticed a couple of guys and computers that weren't there during other sets. The visual side of it is was pretty weak though to be honest and I don't know why he bothers advertising it as an AV set.

edit: also I use Traktor and yeah I'm pretty sure he uses it too

Wow that pale sketcher track brought it all back.. the bliss of lichen, ecstacy by endgames, analogue bubblebath.. jungle, noise.. didnt even mind the dubstep. When the screens kicked in and the crowd came out of the murky glitchy screens.. you knew it was time for things to get seriously aphexed. Comedy, beauty, anxiety.. a set with narrative... He's still playing great sets you wont hear replicated anywhere else. He can do A/V lazer shows with sound artists whatever... dont care, not going to take it too seriously. Always great, always treating and punishing the fans.

Actually i would REEALLy like to see Aphex and Hecker doing an AV show with epic lazers and gurning bouncers on stage with donkey rhubarb costumed dancers. canse that would be seriously good.

I just biked in to point out the Kinect pointed at the audience.

edit: I should've kept on biking. You already know.

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.
