This is hilarious to me...everyone seems to view it as Thom whoring himself on other musicians to stay relevant. Yet no one here considers the fact that Thom and Radiohead were big years before Four Tet and Burial even happened, and that perhaps these collaborations are more an indicator of other artists being big RH fans and wanting to do something with someone they like? Doom is the first in the list who seems like more of a contemporary with RH, timeline wise, however everyone also forgets that Thom has been working with electronic artists for years now (Rabbit In Your Headlights, anyone?)

Anyway I'm really not jumping into that statement as some sort of die-hard RH fan - in fact I've only recently "come back" to them with King Of Limbs after seriously not liking anything they'd done since Kid A/Amnesiac.

I agree with this. Cept Ive been a fan the whole time, never stopping or taking a break.

If Thome wasnt doing this stuff people who claim hes out of the loop and what not. At least I know he still has a passion for music and is on the same wave length as me.

big doing irrelevant bland alternative rock music. Then they became 'artsy' and known for innovation when they tried to incorporate AE into their sound.

I don't think Thom is a whore, i just don't like his music, never had even a brief moment of fandom or enjoyment of his music. and i would find it very pleasurable if somebody he tried to work with (who shares my thoughts about his musical output) brushed him the fuck off. I don't want to shit in the thread anymore so this will be my last post.

I'm not taking it as shitting in the thread. do you think that people are working with him just for noteriety or for artistic growth? I see it as the latter and why I don't think anyone he asks would say no. it's entirely different than the ae/madonna situation you brought up earlier.

While you're certainly allowed to feel like Radiohead were doing irrelevant bland music, even before the electronic stuff happened, myself and many others here probably don't see it that way. Plus it's a bit missing the point if you think Radiohead were so trite as to say "Hey check out this AE stuff, we should do that" - I guess I'm just a bit surprised to see someone hate them so much. Much like Nine Inch Nails were for introducing Aphex to me, RH were more than relevant enough to many people just for the simple fact that they were introducing newer things to their audience all the time.

Anyway, all I REALLY came back to post was - everyone is still assuming Thom approached Four Tet/Burial/Doom/etc - how does anyone know it wasn't actually the other way around? And if you found out that it was Doom who approached Thom to work on a record, would that ruin your view of somebody like Doom? Is hating on Thom THAT important to you?

Everybody take a deep breath and stop acting like music is a religion.

It's a form of expression, not a fucking sacrament. If mister Yorke thinks it'll be fun to work with electronic artists it is what it is. He's not besmirching the holy creed of "how to be a real artist for real or else you're a sellout demon person."

Even if he is cashing in, who fucking cares?

The only thought I have about this is "Well I hope it sounds cool."

I think Mr Yorke does what he damn well likes, for his own personnal satisfaction. If you want to join him or listen to the fruits of his work then feel free too. I don't think he cares as he will always have an audience.

I know a lot of friends who haven't listened to Radiohead since OK Computer when they ditched the guitars. I doubt Thom is really bothered about that. I respect him for pushing his boundries. Fuck me, his band was lumped in with Brit Pop FFS. Good on him.

100% agree!!!

by the way, DOOM = God

Thankfully we both have lots of other things to listen to anyway!

I used to hate Radiohead back when I was 20 and kids were blowing off all the AE I was listening to and saying 'Wow listen to this it's just like the music you listen to!'

Now that I'm older I really couldn't give a flying fuck.

I think once I started recording rock bands and getting into rock production (no I'm not a pro, just a dabbler who lucked out on some nice gear) it helped me appreciate that other forms of music production besides IDM have their own unique and intricate subtleties.

Also, it's a loss, not a win, that Aphex didn't participate in one of the most potentially fucked-up pop collaborations in music history. Reminds me of a certain pretentious electroacoustic composer who shat on Aphex Twin's music. Goes to show that narcissism and artistry do indeed frequently go hand in hand.

also to your point about people not wanting to work with them/thom... aphex did publicly state they he did not care for them at all and thought they were depressing drivel.
