have you ever considered including a banner image at the highest level of (perhaps) gen ban and music discussion, and offering members the ability to purchase that banner image for x # of days with an image of their choice (and of your approval, of course)? this could be an advert for an upcoming gig or release, or just something funny, etc.. i've seen this work on other forums and it seems like it could work here, eh?

this could be a cool idea and friggin hilarious too. i plan on donating again this year too but something like this could squeeze and additional dollar here and dollar there from me i bet.

maybe we could get some watmm limted edition member designed tshirts? who wouldnt buy fred's designed shirt? or gaarg's? id even wear plum's nutella label scan on a t-shirt ffs.

this might not be a bad fundraising idea. a banner people can rent to put retarded/inside jokey stuff on.

Of all the reasons to be banned from here, I see kaini's point...the dupe thing is fucking retarded.

i think it makes complete sense to have a "backup earth" in case the guy in charge of the nukes gets an itchy trigger finger...

After this I listened to geogaddi and I didn't like it, I was quite vomitting at some tracks, I realized they were too crazy for my ears, they took too much acid to play music I stupidly thought (cliché of psyché music) But I knew this album was a kind of big forest where I just wasn't able to go inside.

I was in US tjis summer, and eat in KFC. FUCK That's the worst thing i've ever eaten. The flesh simply doesn't cleave to the bones. Battery ferming. And then, foie gras is banned from NY state, because it's considered as ill-treat. IT'S NOT. KFC is tourist ill-treat. YOU POISONERS! Two hours after being to KFC, i stopped in a amsih little town barf all that KFC shit out. Nice work!

So i hope this woman is not like kfc chicken, otherwise she'll be pulled to pieces.

Well said. It's been the only reason I've considered a dupe in the past (I don't have a dupe).

Glad you posted the costs. I honestly don't feel that the PS3 Game comments were always jokes.

And the Banner thing is a great idea. We could have a monthly banner at the top that members would rent out.

i like that idea. maybe just tie it donations instead, though... top donors get most displays, but everyone that donates would get at least a few (if they want). that seems quite fun, really. some of the banners would probably be pretty amusing, knowing this place !

kind of like, "this segment of highway is sponsored by ____" except you can make a stupid mspaint thing to be shown uptop instead of a sign.

Thanks for the info. JR!

I don't use chat or blogs either and would add my vote to nixing them.

Thirding or fourthing the chat/blogs things as well.

There are plenty of free IRC servers, and plenty of free Java applets that you can incorporate for on-site chatting.

And whilst I have not checked out the blogging functionality here (indeed, i dont even know if i can without donating?) i would doubt it's as functional or great as the free alternatives elsewhere.

and torrents, yeah. there are free trackers as well!

I could more than make up for all the logs we'd lose by cutting chat.

Just throwing it out there - I've virtually not touched the chat or blog? functionality here and have no interest in doing so. My vote would be you can drop that.

As for downloads, would it not be cheaper to seek help from the community here to mirror the downloads on free file hosting sites such as mediafire? In my experience they (mediafire at least) have great speed, file retention and general site uptime. It can be tedious but considering most of the Downloads section seemed to be sourced from members it doesn't seem like a stretch that people would be happy to take the time and bandwidth out once again to do this. I for one would be happy to.

Thank you for your continued efforts on this forum and the website, once upon a time. Been visiting since the joyrex.com days.

*edit*

Don't forget torrents either. Torrents are virtually free. That said I personally don't have the bandwidth to spare to sit on a torrent for an extended period of time to maintain the seed. My internet plan only allows for 80kb/s upload and I download ~100gb of concerts a month from sites that require me to maintain a ratio.

Those are all ideas we've considered before, the main problem is the Downloads manager that is integrated into the Forum software can't use torrent/external links. We need to have a way to control who gets access to the downloads, otherwise what's the point of having them here as an incentive to be part of the community. A lot of people surprisingly joined just to have access to the Downloads, and then some stayed when they realized it was a great place to discuss the music as well.

Word, just read through that thread. Fair enough. Still I feel a kind of temperament problem that makes me feel like I could get banned over nothing or people I find entertaining just disappear unexpectedly, that's what makes me nervous about putting money in.

I rarely, if ever have banned anyone for 'nothing' - and the few times I was hasty, I reconsidered and the person was unbanned. Unfortunately, what someone finds 'entertaining' can sometimes lead to real issues that affect the community. I feel one of the reasons this community has worked all these years is the fact there is even-handed moderation and a general adherence and enforcement to the rules.

I can see how from someone outside the situation some bannings seem harsh and unexpected, but rest assured, we are typically very patient with people before they are banned. Wake is a good example of this, with multiple instances of duplicate accounts, and when his friend got banned for being extremely rude and uncooperative in trying to resolve an issue after being warned to maintain civility, he continued to pull antics that ended up in his banning.

What's telling too is the emails politely asking to be let back in, but then reading his diatribes on that other site that his true feelings about the situation are revealed.

Joyrex - if you're going to host a message board where nerds hang out then prepare to deal with the nerdy jokes that go along with it. people only have something against you when you start banning those people just for fucking around. just sayin'

Well, just 'fucking around' obviously carries a different definition for you and I. I don't think being nerdy is an excuse to behave badly, nor is it one to tolerate going overboard with such behaviour.

Yep. I'll also say for the 500,000th time...why make all these "banishments" permanent?

Often, these things just seem to be petty.

See above. There's usually more to the story than what's apparent or said on the forums. Banning someone is something we do not take lightly, and for it to be effective, it needs to have a general semblance of permanence - otherwise, if someone knew they could act egregiously and then get banned with the knowledge they could come back in a few weeks/months, the urge to create problems on the forums would increase. It's also an example to others considering to see how far they can bend the rules before they get in trouble, as there is real consequence to their actions.

I'm hesitant on that for that very fact! There's a fine line between "bacon - fo shizzle!" and "pedobear bedtime stories, volume one (illustrated)", even if both are done as a joke.

If I ever decide to pull the plug on WATMM, I wouldn't do it quickly - it would come with advance warning, and with good reason. And there's nothing to say I wouldn't turn it over to someone else willing to take on the responsibility.

Also, there's a sense of 'loyalty' with this whole parody site - I've seen many examples of users here on there and disparage WATMM/me, but then come right back here and act like all is well. I feel that if you're truly in support of this site and what it stands for and the community we've built up over the years, there should be no reason anyone should disparage the site they claim to enjoy visiting. It's like saying to your friend's face, 'you're a great guy', and then going to your other friends and then say anything but that about them.

As with the Downloads issue detailed above, blogging and chat are also tied into the forum, and allows control over those services.

Blogging is part of an EKT/EKT Plus membership, and while not as great as say setting up your own Wordpress blog or using Blogger, you get the benefit of a captive, ready-made audience, which is the whole point of running a blog - for people to see and read it.

tbh i have not once looked at any of the ekt blogs. at all.

until now. i just went and had a look and i mean... i dunno. with wordpress or blogger (or even tumblr) you have a stylesheet to mess with, and other bloggers that can actually interact with you and i dunno, other stuff.

i just don't see the draw.

but im not ekt so w/e.
