so is tri-rep. go get garbage and play it loud. play it at night too. play it a lot. it's short but chock full of ae goodness.

I think Chiastic Slide and Envane might be good entry points. Definitely Envane.

Cipater was the track that really got me into Autechre way back when. It's fucking filthy.

This may seem crazy but... is it possible that maybe, just maybe... you just don't like them? I mean... you don't HAVE To like them...

Just get back to them every now and then but don't push it. You need to develop a desire to spin one of their records first.

But if it's been totally air to you thus far ie. you don't pick up ANYTHING good from their music, is it really worth it? You gotta sense its potential. And if you do, it'll come within time.

these mostly, hopefully you don't feel some obligation to like them.

I go through binges.

Usually for 3 days all I listen to is Autechre, and a little Anodyne because I think they have a similar sound. But thats just me. Then Ill go a few weeks and not listen to them at all.

Everyone knows the feeling when you just go "fuck this, I want some fucking robot weirdness. Some fucking damage beats".

At least I do anyway.

If you don't get Amber I would give up on everything else

I think the problem might be that Amber is a bleak fucking samey downer of an album except for 2-3 tracks.

I just went there.

I didn't say it was "bad" :emotawesomepm9:

Honestly, I just feel the need to take Amber down a peg. I always hear "start with Amber," "Amber is their masterpiece before the went up their own bums," etc... and guys, it's just a lot of the tracks are a little short on ideas and development and those drum patterns really are fucking monotonous on the first third of the album. It can certainly be pleasant if you're in the mood, but I can also understand why a listener might be... bored to tears. Example: me rocking Amber in the car while my girlfriend tries to smash her head against a window to relieve the tedium somewhere during Yulquen.

not a huge fan of amber. bought chiastic first, then amber, but it was lp5 that made me love them. i love chiastic now, but i've never really found that love for amber.

tri repeatae is like a moody engineering schematic. draft's peer-to-peer style of sound can be difficult, but once you get in there it's really like some soundfonts walking around manchester. i liked some tracks off oversteps. everything else is crap.

Alright. Recognize that Autechre is not about instant gratification. When I first started listening, I thought many songs went on too long or were intentionally frustrating. Don't go in looking for gimmicky Aphex thrills or BOC instant hooks.

Get yourself a copy of Chiastic Slide. That should provide the right balance of melodic and crunchy to get you into them. If it doesn't work for you, then Autechre probably just aren't your poison.

listen to confield at volume 11.

then listen to draft 7.30 at volume 15

end of story.

so then,

what's the difference between growing to understand and appreciate an autechre album, and stockholm syndrome?

I actually agree that Amber isn't a good start. It took me quite a while to like Amber. While I like it a lot more than Incunabula now, I still feel that in comparison, it sounds rushed and less refined with less attention to detail.

But now I kinda like that about it... it's a kinda cheesy and dated in a way I really like... that simplicity of it is really nice, and there's some beautiful melodies in it, they just take a while to sorta sink into your head (I can't believe I used to find Further boring).

I guess if I'm honest with myself I'll admit that Amber isn't a masterpiece after all, but I find it to be by far one of their most enjoyable albums despite it's flaws.

I started with LP5, because I was one of those teenagers that reveled in being a weirdo. I could listen to it and feel like I was transported to another world, which I felt more comfortable in than this one.

It's immature but I still feel a little bit like that in a way, so I still love those more otherworldy Autechre albums (Envane through to Confield).

Odd but I needed a lot of time to get into Autechre. They are very unique and special, so you can miss-hear a lot and miss-understand a lot. Today I adore them so much and sometimes really feel the need to listen to them. I love the more digital, newer stuff in special. Psychedelics work great with Autechre, but that's with all subforum artists here :emotawesomepm9:

Check my dusty tunes and mixes over here: https://soundcloud.com/2kn

I think their remixes would make a good entry if you're into stuff like AFX. They're more groove-based and classic sounding, but have that special Autechre charm that might unlock other tracks for you.

Take this sublime remix for example:

5:39 of this track doesn't make you jizz your pants, you're not much of an idm fan..

A closer analogy would be that of Jesus. Autechre are like Jesus spreading new ideas to the heathens. Most people don't understand or don't accept his message to begin with, but over time recognize his divine heritage!

V Snares is more like stockholm.
