Alright. Recognize that Autechre is not about instant gratification.

so then,

what's the difference between growing to understand and appreciate an autechre album, and stockholm syndrome?

A closer analogy would be that of Jesus. Autechre are like Jesus spreading new ideas to the heathens. Most people don't understand or don't accept his message to begin with, but over time recognize his divine heritage!

i didn't particularly like draft at first, but then i got into it. while lovely, it's not exactly a religious experience. based on that, didn't feel like putting in the time on other albums. my ears are already pretty damn busy.

Yes, I was being a little absurd with that comparison... I don't really like Jesus much. Not as much as Autechre anyway :whistling:

V Snares was a trap, that you deftly side stepped!

Anyway, in all seriousness it can't be compared to Stockholm because those victims "mistake a lack of abuse from their captors as an act of kindness". With Autechre you grow to appreciate nuances you didn't always see, but they were always there. Kind of like growing to appreciate a certain food after trying it a couple of times.

the stockholm thing was kidding.

but, seriously: why do they deserve so many hours of my ear time? i've seen it bloom. it was pretty; a notable experience... but i'm over it. plenty of rough-and-ready tunes with interesting fings going on that don't require months of flagellation, yet still reward repeat listens. like clark!

strangely enough, I found the early releases to be the hardest of all to get into. Incanabula was just boring minimal bullshit to me(i still don't really like it or amber). I had the same problem with selected ambient works vol 2. I didn't really have a basis to appreciate the music when I first heard it, I was used to listening to shit like weezer and green day. But I was still fascinated I just didn't really understand it. The first electronic music I really got into was geogaddi followed by drukqs(both from my local library, i also picked up saw2), I picked tri-repetae++ from internet recommendation but i found it boring to listen to(i still do, except for eutow and one of the other songs) compared to geogaddi and drukqs. It wasn't until a long time later I listened to confeild and LP5 and realized how awesome autechre actually was.

This is strange but I think it has something to do with how my early opinions of electronic music were founded. Drukqs was my constant go-to listening piece in the early phase. I didn't have any reference to similar music so every moment was just constant fascination into how a mind could even conceive of music that sounded this way. What was he thinking when composing it? Just a constant barrage of drum hits, different kinds, yet it seemed to have a structure, no structure I had ever heard before. I didn't even know what a drum break was. I didn't really enjoy it either when I first heard it, but it was so complicated that it gave me more to think about and study that I knew there had to be some aspect that I just didn't understand. I used to think that the piano tracks were all samples too, really boggled my mind. drukqs to this day is still my most favorite, listened and studied piece of music. I autisticly anticipate every drum hit, organ noise, melody, synth, vocal sample better that is pumped into my ears and I love every second of it.

Autechre.

I think you just accurately described every person on this forum. Well played.

like chassis said, i also go through binges, and they'll be pretty spread out. stuff like incunabula-chiastic slide, i can listen to more often than everything else of theirs. quaristice too. everything else i feel somewhat cold towards, despite the fact that they are all ingenious

If you don't get Amber I would give up on everything else

I think the problem might be that Amber is a bleak fucking samey downer of an album except for 2-3 tracks.

I just went there.

top favorable quotes about electronic music:

-i feel like it transports me to another world

-it's just like video game music!

-i could dance to that

To be fair, I think I've long outgrown the need to feel like I'm "in another world". That's a very teenage thought but yes I think we all went through that when we were young. Now I feel more like everyone's more or less on the same page as me, except that I have anxiety issues which means I very rarely am able to acknowledge this.

In other words, I don't feel like am an "alien" any more, just someone with a lifestyle and culture that not many people tend to fit into but most seem to understand.

Sorry, off topic, just wanted to clarify that :)

I didn't say it was "bad" :emotawesomepm9:

Honestly, I just feel the need to take Amber down a peg. I always hear "start with Amber," "Amber is their masterpiece before the went up their own bums," etc... and guys, it's just a lot of the tracks are a little short on ideas and development and those drum patterns really are fucking monotonous on the first third of the album. It can certainly be pleasant if you're in the mood, but I can also understand why a listener might be... bored to tears. Example: me rocking Amber in the car while my girlfriend tries to smash her head against a window to relieve the tedium somewhere during Yulquen.

lol

i'm kinda with you on that, amber is my least favorite. i love it but i get pretty bored during silverside and glitch. it was the album that took me longest to get into.

best way to listen to autechre is on acid.

I love Amber. But I started with Amber, skipped most tracks, deleted the files, and wrote Autechre off as boring. Then I tried Untilted and it clicked.

Don't look at it as a quest "to get them." "To get" implies learning and intellect and, as far as I can tell, enjoying art isn't an intellectual pursuit.

I'm not saying that one can't take joy in the process of learning and understanding, but to me, art is judged by how it first strikes me. A few things have grown on me over time, but that's more to do with my changing mood and the comfort of familiarity.

Actually, just take some speed and sync a Bruce Lee movie to Pen Expers on repeat and you should be gtg :sup:
