I think it their music is a bit like classical music. There are a lot of small moments and progressions, I find it best when I'm focusing on it and following it <step by step>, although it does work fine in the background too. As someone else said, I think proper listening gear is needed. When I switched to my senn's it really opened up the sound and made it more comfortable, as opposed to my old cheap headphones.

I wouldn't force it.

It took me a couple years to get into Autechre. I read about how awesome they were, gave some a listen and couple stand it. I came back to them a few times over the next year or 2 and each time was a little more receptive... what really did it was the release or Quaristice. I figured since they had a new album coming out it would be a perfect time to dive right in. I bought Quaristice when it was released and surprisingly fell in love with it on first listen! I guess my mind was open enough at that point... from there I just slowly collected the back catalog and now I can say for sure that they are my favorite artist. I don't look forward to new music from anyone else the way I do from Autechre!

In short, if you don't care much for their sound now, just try a little later on... your tastes are always changing slightly and your mind (& ears) are hopefully always opening more. It's worth it in the long run, though.

First post!

I like to listen to Autechre with my headphones on in complete darkness. For some reason I can only really appreciate the different timbres of the sounds and the depth/space between the sounds in complete darkness. If that makes any sense.

I also notice that you need to put the volume up slightly for most of their releases, in comparison to other artists.

I think LP5 is the best entry point. It was my first Ae. For me it is their most "fun" album, and only takes a few listens to get into.

A few tracks, for example pen expers and sim gishel, opened up for me properly whilst listening on relatively low volume on headphones. Then of course afterwards when I knew what sound to "look out for" and when, I of course cranked up the volume

welcome! nice avatar, btw.

LP5 is definitely a good entry point for their more current sound. if i was sliding a song or two in to some other stuff i'd probably go with something off of Amber, though.

dark helps one focus, for sure. that helps with pretty much all music though, just being able to focus on it fully. i know i don't do that too often these days, surely not as much as i used to.

Cheers! The art is by Dan McPharlin, the guy does some great stuff.

Yeah, Amber's another good one to start with. I remember years ago I tried to get someone into Autechre and lent them Amber and LP5. He seemed to enjoy them and found them easy enough. Though he didn't like Arch Carrier because, he said, it sounded like Gangsta's Paradise (!)

I listen to it in my car at as loud of a volume that is physically possible, and yes this has lead to weird stares at traffic stops

does not compute

I went through their discography in order when i first discovered them. it was very rewarding and I would recommend it to anyone seriously interested in getting into them. however i would say amber is probably the perfect gateway drug
