PODCAST: Sonic Router x Bleep.com #011

You know when everything that could possibly conspire against you to stop you meeting a deadline happens? Like when your external hard drive melts and then, when you finally sit down to record after carefully sectioning out your social life, carefully allotting time for the recording session only to find that your XLR cable has shorted leaving everything you say into the microphone cloaked in about 27 layers of distortion? Yeah, them ones…

That’s why this podcast is hosted by American Charles. He’s truly a hero. He introduces music from Shlohmo, Thundercat (pictured), Lunice, Rustie, Blawan, Outboxxx, Trim, Raffertie, xxxy, Lando Kal, Damu and more.

Ekoplekz: The Creative Exchange Between Man And Machine

Bristol’s Punch Drunk label is notorious for shedding light on new talent emanating from the Bristol area; so much so that Peverelist, the owner, has created a couple of other labels (Livity Sound/Unearthed) to release music that doesn’t strictly adhere to that objective. Over its lifespan the label has, literally, carved out reputations for producers like Guido, RSD, Kahn, Gemmy, Andy Mac and Superisk, focusing its gaze on upfront dancefloor fodder – albeit tracks that are a bit hypercolour, or of fractured, left leaning persuasions. The 20th release though came from Ekoplekz, a Bristol based musician whose music shared little in common with the artists who came before him. That 12”, ‘Stalag Zero’ b/w ‘Distended Dub,’ is essentially two sides of groove based noise that get infected with dub elements thanks to Plekz’s pithy use of delay.

For me it was something of a signal and a change in the tide – something I’d been actively looking for myself. Even having been aware of Peverelist’s diverse music taste for a while, after discussing a few bits and pieces over the counter at the recently retired Rooted Records shop that used to reside on the foot of Gloucester Road before the arches, it still came as something of a jolt. A welcome wakeup call that coincided with the osmosis like perforation of a gluttony of overtly smooth tracks with pretty mixdowns that, while technically brilliant, seemed to lack any kind of decisive or innovative punch.

Ekoplekz’s work is a contrast; stark, jagged and a little bit overly-fucked up. Entirely processed manually, it’s an analogue jettison from the body of one Nick Edwards, a person you might know better as the author of the blog Gutterbreakz. Since that first outing on Punch Drunk, he’s released an album called Memowrekz on Mordant Music and selected live recordings made at the Dalston Jazz Bar and at the Dubloaded night. As we’ve written before, noisy freakouts are not as removed from the edges of dubstep’s convention as you might think, with artists like Shackleton and The Bug making exceptional use of out of drones and found sounds; but with Ekoplekz it’s different. Forget the fact that it’s being put out by Punch Drunk; there’s no Vex’d type muscle, no Cloaks like interpretation of noise as dubstep or even a tangible drum beat. It’s all dark, radiophonic type experiments that come packaged with a machine hum and that static hiss of authenticity.

Darker than Raymond Scott and more ominous than the work of Delia Derbyshire, Ekoplekz’s latest album project, Intrusive Incidentalz Vol. 1 is the recording of his two part process of atmospheric composition. It’s corrosive; constantly falling (in and) out of tune, aurally melting through loops, delay pedals and reverb cycles. Described by the label as ‘violently unstable’ the album, that was released yesterday, further demonstrates Bristol’s experimental underclass. Much like Roly Porter’s recent Aftertime album on Subtext, Intrusive Incidentalz stands on hind legs like a dragon; a daunting beast that’s poised to scare and impress you in equal measure.

James Balf caught up with Edwards to discover a lot more about a producer the internet knows little about…

SR Mix #100: Commodo [Deep Medi]

A lot has changed since we went live with our first mix from Rekordah, a dude who himself has gone from strength to strength, beginning his Astro:Dynamics label and assuming his role as one of SR’s advisory council, back in February of 2009. The Sonic Router editorial staff have written a lot since, constantly keen to shed light on some of what they deem to be the most interesting and noteworthy music. It’s never been a paid job, more of a passion that’s rewarded by little outside of internet kudos (other than a couple of fruitless nominations for the annual DSF awards) but on the day we publish our 100th mix, the hours of Microsoft Word, Blogger and now WordPress, all those weeks of accumulated effort seems worth it to reach this triple figure milestone.

We never thought it’d get this far and no matter how much (or how little) the humanity of those involved translates over these pages; the site has always been a product of those people involved. It reflects their personalities, tastes and, above all, the cyclical nature of journalistic interest or availability. If, over the last few years, you’ve contributed (either words or mixes, tracks to giveaway or material for review), spent time reading or disagreeing with what we write, if you’ve listened to our radio show, our downloaded our Bleep podcast; from the bottom of our binary blood pumps, we thank you.

It’s also actually quite fitting for such a landmark mix that it highlights both Commodo, a producer doing increasingly interesting things within the open ended realm of 140bpm bass led music – harking back to that ‘proper dubstep’ (or ‘the reason that we started this site in the first place’) – and introduces a new member of our editorial staff; Atlanta’s own, Owen Renn.

Enjoy,

SR Mix #101: V.C. [Donky Pitch]

Mainly transmitting from Finland and Sweden, the skweee movement has become one of the most unique sounds in recent electronic music. Like dubstep and drum & bass before it, it freely incorporates a multitude of other styles in its influences and even though on the surface it sounds like a synthesizer drenched hip hop offshoot, analogous to what artists like Joker, Rustie or Hudson Mohawke are doing, there’s a depth of character and emotion behind that squall of high pitched computerized funk. The name ‘skweee’ originates from the process of squeezing out a plethora of tweaked sounds from the same vintage synthesizer, producing a track and a soundworld with incredibly limited means and the noteworthy basslines (the groove of R&B is one of the scene’s calling cards) is definitely one of the main focuses there.

Outside of Scandinavia and outside of the continent’s core labels, Flogsta Danshall, Harmönia and Dodpop, the skweee scene has been represented by labels like Posionous Gases in America but in England, the sound has been supported fully by Brighton based duo, Donky Pitch. The party-turned-label started in 2009 with a spat of parties that joined the dots between the fluorescent skweee sounds of people like Randy Baracuda, with DJs like Alexander Nut and producers like Gemmy, Slugabed, Rekordah and Tokimonsta before it evolved in a label, and when the two arms started morphing together in 2010, it was only natural that the bright, liquid sounds of skweee be a part of that as well; which brings us to the enigmatic beatmaker, V.C….

Hailing from Helsinki, V.C. is about to launch The Trick EP through Donky Pitch, a slinky, sometimes pomp driven, slice of electronic funk, complete with a remarkably mysterious video for lead track ‘Superfluid.’ There’s little information online about V.C., so with his Donky Pitch out this week and a 7” available on the Spanish Lo-Fi Funk imprint it seemed like an ideal time to chat with this exciting producer about his influences, his production and the future…

SR Mix #102: DjRUM [2nd Drop]

DjRUM’s recent suite of music released by 2nd Drop Records stood out to us for a number of reasons. Given that there’s a certain propensity within electronic dance music for stylistic shifts, bittersweet vocal chopping and super tweaked, soundsystem ready cleanliness, Rum’s three part ‘Mountains’ odyssey should stick out like a sore thumb – but it doesn’t, it caresses most categories with ease. His music is deep, layered as much with restraint as it is palpable sound, but it kicks low, hitting your gut in a similar way to the work of a lot of his peers.

SR Mix #103: Graphics [Granholme]

For Graham Best, the person responsible for collating and pushing a slew of artists you are no doubt now familiar with (if you regularly read site’s like ours), through fabric’s Elevator Music compilation, his position up until now might have been a little bit unclear. With one foot in publishing and the other on the dancefloor – his arms probably reaching as high as they can to bang the roof/air conditioning pipes in appreciation of whatevers caught his ear – he’s been in the background of several projects since that compilation came out, working closely with Martyn to help run his 3024 label.

A person whose fanatically knowledgeable about music, Best has the kind of foresight that every burgeoning A&R should be a little bit jealous of. His desire to create a label of his own is something that we’ve personaly discussed at length, on numerous occasions and the other week, when I met him to grab a copy of his new Granholme empire’s debut release from the young producer Graphics (who here handles this week’s Sonic Router mix), there was a noticeable excitement about him…

SR Mix #110: Logos [Keysound]

Even though drums are probably the most integral instrument in dance music (whether that’s the 4×4 kick drum, dubstep’s 3rd beat of a bar snare or the challenging rush of hi hats in drum & bass and juke) when you remove them it can have just as big an impact as a power play of tom tom rolls and cymbal crashes. Watch anyone around you in a dance search for the snap of a poignant beat: they’re jerking with their shoulders, neck or hands – they’re triggered by the rhythm. And whilst you can’t really mutilate their bodily structure as readily without that drive of percussion present in the rhythm section you can still wrap people up in the comforting swell of a bassline and confuse their bodies into paying attention to the top lines. It’s something grime godfather Wiley proved with his ‘devil mixes’ (versions of this tracks that removed the drums out of a tune and focused entirely on the low end and space of his mixdown), alongside the early meditative dubstep that primarily focused on both those things – though the fingersnap cloying, super reverbed snare points were just as important.

That mindset is probably more where the London based Logos resides. Known to some for his ‘Kowloon’ track that’s found fans in people like Ben UFO and Dusk & Blackdown (who are slated to release it on their Keysound label imminently) his music is properly icy. In the same way that Wiley’s eski beat work was calculated, measured and clinical; Logos’ productions seem to feed off that sprawling quasi-drumless canvas, developing and morphing his riffs, utilizing a lot of the same eski soundset that he eeks out of his Prophet 5 emulation plugin.

His ‘Atlanta 96’ track was in fact the thing that really turned our head: an expansive near 4 minutes of fluttering square wave synths that pique and dive around each other over the top of his 808 kick drums. It’s was abosultely arresting, like Logos stretched out the possibilities of what would otherwise be an incredibly limited palette by letting each individual sound really carve its own niche on the end product. It’s emphatic but it never dares to thump itself upon you. Other tracks like ‘Cloubursting’ mess more with delay, stuttering out his 8 bit riffs into ornamental garnishes of pixelated colour and bits like ‘Canyon (Step II)’ or ‘King Mob’ contradict a little of what I’ve just said by playing more with that ‘Treddin’ On Thin Ice’ era notion of awkward, squeaky drum patterns – though it’s never really the main drive of his music; the attention is more on the interplay of layers.

It goes without saying that we’re stoked to be able to present our 110th Sonic Router Mix from Logos. James Balf caught up with the producer to discuss his history and his techniques…
