Don't listen to these fools. Never give up on a friend in the times they need you the most. This guy probably has nobody backing him, he probably hasn't been hugged in years. Give him a hug, and tell him you will support him no matter what. This is what friends are for, times like this.

For anyone that remembers this post, my friend Jerry pled guilty yesterday. It really makes me sad because when he gets out his children will be grown. And he's spent the last 3 years in jail awaiting trial.

What? He tried to kill someone with a car. Luckily the man survived, but he was maimed for life. Psychotic break or not the man is dangerous to the well-being and survival of other people. see: violent offender. He'll probably get out earlier for good behavior and whatnot anyway.

i'm not saying he deserves no punishment, but given the state of prisons in the US, throwing someone who is already mentally ill in there for twenty years is going to do absolutely nothing except for exacerbate his illness.

get him some psychiatric help for fuck's sake.

like, as an example of it being done right(ish), one of my dad's good friends had a psychotic break (also bipolar) and made a bunch of bombs and lit his house on fire and set them off and a firefighter got injured. he plead insanity and spent 15 years in an institution. and that actually helped him rather than just ruining his life and any chances of future employment/contribution to society.

I'll never get why it's ok to be a bigot towards red neck/country folk types and make sweeping generalizing statements about them all while criticizing them for their bigotry. In fact I find it pretty disgustingly hipocritical. I've met at least a couple redness who were cool people. Yeah lots of them are exactly as the general statements in the thread, but not all. But whatever dudes, continue fighting hate and bigotry and intolerance with your own hate, intolerance, and bigotry+generalizations, makes sense. It's ok because you better than them. And that whole socioeconomic determinant thing you use to excuse any and all behaviors of other groups, doesn't apply to these people, at all, does it? Btw I'm so sure you'd be safer in a ghetto of L.A. than in some country red neck town, for sure. That's why you always hear about those super high murder, rape, theft, and shooting rates in the country. It's also highly ironic to me that plenty of these red neck types actually vote democrat. Why they would vote for people who's prime supporters casually call them inbred is maybe proof of how dumb some of them really are?

OT tho, I grew up with a cousin who turned intoa sociopath and was involved in shooting a guy in his own house, presumably over drugs. He didn't do the shooting but he easily could have. They got him for throwing the gun out the window of the car, later, and other things. Did a few years for it. I would have liked to see them throw away the key. The dude in the OP sounds maybe legit mentally disturbed.

im fine with him getting psychiatric help, but in some sort of isolated area from the rest of society. 20 years in a psych ward makes more sense than jailtime, but no fucking way would I be comfortable with letting him back into the public after doing something like that.

Not saying anything different. Just saying that jail does bad things to "sane" people, let alone the mentally ill.
