Quick idea: whenever you're tired at work, just tell you've got a sudden mental illness. 90days holiday, all-inclusive and the tax payer pays.

Thinking mental illness is bullshit--and being extremely sensitive about anything that might add 1/1,000,000th of a penny to your taxes--is some goofy neocon shit, Godel. I can't tell who the hell is joking in this thread.

*nods, and then looks for Aspurjer's 'off' switch*

so some guy kills your mum without provocation, turns out he just had phsycosis and killed her because he had a fucked up mental episode. he shouldnt go to jail? because it was his mental illnesses fault? fuck that shit.

yes, actually. if someone who was psychotic killed my mother, i would not want them to go to jail. i would want them to be in a psychiatric institution until they were well enough to return to the rest of society.

It depends on the specific context of the case and people involved; i dunno why anyone would argue about this sort of thing in generalities

GHOST: have you killed Claudius yet
HAMLET: no
GHOST: why
HAMLET: fuck you is why
im going to the cemetery to touch skulls

If the person was a paranoid schizophrenic and when they killed my mother actually thought they were being attacked by a giant bug, then mens rea and all that shit. Mens rea.

Is there any evidence that Farr's friend had mental health issues? I couldn't find it in the news articles, this thread just started taking on the tone as if he was bipolar. He premeditated the act ("I intended to kill him") and plead guilty to it.

As someone with bipolar who kinda knows the ins and outs of this frankly awesome condition, I can somewhat-safely say that bipolar would (could?) only really account for the impulsiveness but not the actual impulse to kill.

Even if he was somehow right and the dude was a terrorist, that's still murder. He should've called the cops if he thought the dude was a terrorist.

For anyone that remembers this post, my friend Jerry pled guilty yesterday. It really makes me sad because when he gets out his children will be grown. And he's spent the last 3 years in jail awaiting trial.

while my particular brand of bipolar is pretty mild compared to this, i know plenty of people who have had psychotic manic breaks that could easily have led to a situation similar to this.

Ah, there we go, thanks. That article wouldn't load earlier for some reason. I know a few heavily bipolar folks, and I also know how easily misdiagnosed it can be (my gf has been "diagnosed" bipolar twice [both times w/o any testing and within the span of minutes after meeting the doctor], and her parents have tried to convince her she is bipolar, though she doesn't feel this way herself and all medications she's tried have had disastrous results) - and yeah, it can lead to some wild behavior. Nonetheless, I believe this man premeditated his attempted murder and was largely aware of his actions (based on his own quotes, his plea, and what Rubin said about his politically charged actions on facebook).

Hmm.

As someone who used to have semi-frequent manic episodes as well as bona fide psychotic breaks, I'm virtually certain that I never would have hurt anyone on purpose. I think that has to do with my 'organic' personality.

Whereas, I can see someone with certain aggressive tendencies doing something like this amidst a psychotic break. That is to say, I don't think psychosis* alone would account for this.

*Unless we're talking a paranoid schizophrenia which, once again, is like having someone slip LSD in your coffee.

i'm not disagreeing

i just think that both of you are saying "well, he wouldn't have done this were it not for the fact that he was an asshole to begin with"

whereas i'm saying "he was an asshole, but he wouldn't have hurt someone if he wasn't psychotic."

same viewpoint, different directions.

Umm what? Why?

If your body was possessed by an evil spirit and it went around hurting people, and then it left...should you go to jail?

Yes?! You still hurt people.

Negative. At the end of Insidious Josh strangles Lin Shaye to death while possessed by the evil spirit of Parker Crane. Then at the start of Insidious 2 the police suspect Josh but can't find any DNA evidence on Lin Shaye's corpse. So it would appear that when a soul is possessed it retains the form of the host physically, but all the DNA/fingerprints of the possessor. A possessed person isn't accountable for their actions at all. It was the same for Regan when she put Burke Dennings and Father Karras through her bedroom window. Although she was a suspect, they couldn't find any DNA on the corpses so you see her drive off at the end with no memory of what had happened. It leaves the police with a lot of paperwork to fill out.
