⬆️ that glasses, wristwatch, and mustache combo goes hard. Love the light bossa nova feel and piano.

I been revisiting some Miles Davis albums: Relaxin' with, Cookin' with, Steamin' with, and Workin' with The Miles Davis Quintet. The recordings for all four LPs were recorded on two separate sessions in 1956. One of my fav jazz drummers, Philly Joe Jones, plays on all of them, same with John Coltrane on saxophone, cool to hear Coltrane as he was coming up before getting into making his own albums as a leader. Not my favorite Miles Davis albums but lots of great stuff, such a unique tone and approach to the trumpet, almost sounds as expressive as a human voice at times, master of phrasing, melody, and the light touch on ballads like this:

Start at 3:06 - absolutely insanely well-curated collection of Miles through my favorite years and the transitions make it for me

Wasnt Dave Brubeck someone from watmm's grandad?

Vague memory of this from a few years ago?

saw this album recommended on social media, trumpeter Freddie Hubbard's Red Clay. Liked it a lot, came out in the early days of jazz fusion, rhythm section funky as hell. The drums and bass are excellent, and the mixing of the kick drum and the bass sounds phenomenal. Herbie Hancock plays Fender Rhodes on the album. Lenny White played drums on all the tracks except for the final song, which is a live version of the title track, where Billy Cobham, considered the best jazz fusion drummer, plays drums. The studio version of title track also is really nice and has better mixing imo, included below:

Can anyone recommend anything in the vein of the early to mid 70s stuff Herbie Hancock was doing that was like cosmic fusion. Some of this stuff just leaves me jaw dropped at the weird twists and turns the music made and the builds, etc. Totally unparalleled to my brain. Help me out here.

amazing album - I recently watched a documentary about his life and music, Chasing Trane. Thought it was pretty good, had a bunch of quotes from him throughout the film narrated by Denzel Washington. Also funny to me that Bill Clinton shows up frequently talking about Coltrane's music, was honestly surprised at his intelligence and taste when it comes to jazz. A lot of Coltrane's colleagues noted how often and rigorously he would practice, they refer to his work ethic in that regard as spartan. Coltrane's vision of music and its power or meaning is also very inspiring.

Was also cool to hear Elvin Jones reminisce about playing music with Coltrane. If I remember correctly he plays drums on the ballads album too. He was also great when he let loose, like on this duet with Coltrane:

George Benson on guitar with great rhythm section (Ron Carter on Bass, Herbie Hancock on piano, and Billy Cobham on drums). Benson and Herbie do a little call and response at the end of Herbie's solo - very nice:

been going through discography of guitarist Joe Pass. Like the album Intercontinental a lot. Down and mid tempo standards, trio with Pass on guitar and a rhythm section of players I never heard of, Eberhard Weber on bass and Kenny Clare on drums. All three of them sound fantastic:

His album For Django also really good, another trio album:

He also has a series of albums all called Virtuoso and numbered. His cover of the John Coltrane song Giant Steps is remarkable, showcases his style very well: he mixes single note melodies/soloing, bass lines, and harmonic soloing with chords, and he often does so with a lot of speed:
