Also, I may have plugged it here before but I can't recommend Robin Kelley's biography highly enough to any fans of Thelonious Monk, it is very thorough. Also recommend that Cisco Bradley bio on William Parker (Universal Tonality), and if you're a fan of the AACM scene even a bit, you'll likely enjoy George Lewis' (yes, the same guy who does all that cool stuff with trombone and sometimes computers*) history of it called A Power Stronger Than Itself which is also delightfully exhaustive. I'm very excited to check out the new biography of Cecil Taylor (In the Brewing Luminous) by Philip Freeman (who also wrote some other good sounding jazz books including about the 1990s new wave of New York free jazz and Miles' electric era).

*Lewis has been exploring computer assisted/enabled musical improvisation for a long time and without a doubt longer than anyone else doing so in the world of jazz music. Here's a talk he's giving at MIT: https://www.media.mit.edu/events/ml-perspectives-why-do-we-want-computers-to-improvise-with-george-lewis/ I'm a lot more interested in his take on the impact AI can/should/etc have in music than most people's, I must say, in no small part due to his importance as an early trailblazer.
