and i'm kinda over the VHS bug and all the hype now.

The hype ?! Outside of this forum the guy barely exists at all ...

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

His music deserves attention in my opinion. He has quite a unique style and approach plus his first 3 releases have all been superb.

Agreed - If anything VHS Head is one of the most under-hyped electronic artists at the moment ...

i meant hype in the 'IDM world'... (including this forum) if there is such a thing anymore. not mainstream, big-time hype, obviously.

and people do talk about things to do with electronic/IDM music outside of this forum you know! honestly, they do.

That's a scary thought.

i agree. his style is interesting and the approach/method is fairly unique. i'm a fan of most tracks, but can get a bit tired of it after a while now.

TROG is a good album though and interesting for the most part.

edit: i think i prolly rinsed it a bit too much when it first came out last year and now i'm like.. VHS Head.. eh, meh...

i'll come back to it again later though... and will probably buy a third of the EP, if that's possible. :)

what's even more scary is the notion and thought that this place is the epicentre of IDM and electronic music! :emotawesomepm9:

As with all music, I have to of course be in the right mood for an album like TROG. I could be in a really relaxed state of mind and think that a bit of VHS Head is not what I need at that moment. But when I get in from work, and I might still be feeling a little energetic and am able to allocate my attention to something like TROG, then I enjoy it so much. I suppose all of this goes without saying because music is dependent on our moods at a given time.

But anyway - I look forward to more VHS Head. I'm willing to rate his music as high as the featured artists here who I listen to all the time (Ae, AFX, BoC etc.)

I agree with Sirch. The albums very cool but for some reason I am not being inspired to buy this ep, perhaps a couple of tracks or so.

do it.

as much as i love vhs head, i was skeptical because it really seems like more of the same. but after a few listens, it really starts to sink in and click. the title track is especially amazing.

this is how i feel too. it's just not exciting me much anymore, like it did last year.

i hope he's not gonna turn out to be this one-style-wonder.

still, early days, though...

do like the more tuneful tracks on the EP.

I hope he keeps doing what he does right now. No need to change anything.

The last thing I want is what became of Bibio.

Listening to TROG to try and stop myself downloading Midnight Section as I was hoping to have the vinyl by now.

the Gescom vinyl has been delayed due to the test pressing having been rejected...I'm guessing that the same has happened to the VHS Head EP

Well at least it's a relief to know I'm not the only one still waiting for Midnight Section. But I caved in today and downloaded it (legitimately, which I was always going to do eventually), and I think it's a great EP. Sounds somehow quite different to TROG to me.

I guess I still don't really get it  Not my cup of tea, but I know I'm not the only person with my view:

i swear that this EP is merely outtakes from the trademark ribbons of gold LP. it's like, dude gets some glitches going and sets them up early in the song, then spends anywhere from 2-7 minutes extrapolating all kinds of derivatives of the initial glitch, ultimately reaching a crescendo of nearly 100% glitch with only trace amounts of the original groove left.

it's like he's on an autechre-ish mission to deconstruct music so hardcore that he literally d/e/volves into 100% studder glitch guh-guh-guh madness, and after hearing one or two tracks like that, it's like "ok so there's 5 more songs on here that are gonna be the same thing? color me excited"

there's nothing as kickass grab-you-by-the-nuts-and-scream-I'M-THE-FUCKING-DADDY anthemic style like "remote control" and there's nothing as simplistically beautiful as gianasi. gianasi is prolly the epitome of the vhs head "formula", insomuch as he resisted the urge to glitch 100% of the time and let the synths/pads/melodics/harmonics do ~80-90% of the wailing, therefore allowing the glitches to be a welcome addition to the mix, as opposed to being the whole damn song.

it's kind of like when you have a good slice of cake with excellent frosting and you're like "man that frosting kicks so much ass i wanna say "fuck the cake" and just get down with a tub of frosting!!! hellz yeah ninjas WOOP WOOP!!!@" and then approximately 2-3 spoonfuls into the frosting tub you're like "holy fuck i'm an idiot... this is disgusting and wrong" --- metaphorically speaking, with VHS head the cake is the actual track.. the melodics/harmonics/synths/pads/etc, and the frosting is the glitchery. this EP goes straight into the tub of frosting, and i think i wanna puke after a good ~15-20 mins of continually eating frosting.

seriously, this new EP reminds me a lot of the venetian snares musical theory... and that's not a good thing. do remember that venetian snares = the piss beer of the so-called-IDM-world

I like sini's glitch/frosting comparison. I just hope that's not actually true of this EP ... we'll see once I get me mitts on it!

It's actually quite a good metaphor actually ! I mean don't get me wrong I enjoyed it, but the first time I ended up with a bit of an ice cream headache - the second listen through was far less of a sugar rush though ....
