None of that is true. Humans inhabit about 2% of the Earth's surface area. Area that has been altered in some fashion by humans is estimated to be about 30-40% (that doesn't mean destroyed, it means altered.)

Human territory covers the entire dry surface area of the Earth. They believe they own this territory, in the sense that an ant believes it owns a part of the soil.

There have been much larger extinction events than the minor one we are undergoing now. Extinction events are necessary in evolution. Mammals came to dominate the landscape as a result of the last major extinction event - that happened 65 million years ago (long before modern humans came to dominate the earth).

Not exactly sure what you're trying to do here, other than undermine the vast, global event that arose from human activity in the last century.

Now, certainly we as humans have had some impact on the earth, but it is precisely our dominance that means we have a responsibility not to say "fuck it" but to improve our understanding of our impact on the environment and use our giant frontal lobes to fix the problems.

Do honestly believe this is happening, on the level that is desperately needed?

I'd like to direct everyone back to my original point:

Humans have created a society where human instinct is tragically mismatched with the way people are expected to behave.

I like honesty the best. I will openly trust just about anyone until you cross me once, then you are on the shit list forever and I will not let it go. there is no reason to lie to people you love.

well real lies, lying about a lap dance, or a happy ending or saying, no babe, there weren't strippers, midgets or balloons at that bachelor party. no I didn't do any bumps or suck on nitrous balloons until the sun peaked over the bare trees on that brisk morning. there were no mushrooms, mushroom tea or endless amounts of herb. no I did not wake up next to a rubber glove. I have no idea what these stains are or how I got these scratches. what dent in the car? no one caught a ping pong ball in their mouth after it was fired out of her sphincter, that can't even happen baby.

those, those don't count as lies.

Ye Rhombix, you cant possible know that human is the species that had the largest effect on the Earth. Yours and our knowledge doesnt stem that far back.

overall you might feel disgusted with society and all, like me and rhombix/sirch, and this is acceptable and actually a sign of intelligence in some ways.

at the same time, there is a point where you have to stop sitting in this feeling and 'grow up' in a way where you accept the way things are and make do in whatever way you want. respect yousrelf.

I like people with skin, it's just awkward when they don't have skin. ...

but seriously, sincerity and sense of humor and open-mindedness are pretty good qualities. Fred pretty much covered it. I can tell you qualities I strongly dislike... I can't stand people with "one-uppish" and better-than-you/elitist personalities, and hypocrites. Also self-centeredness in people really gets annoying. (I think this is why I've grown to hate one of my roommates as he regularly demonstrates all of these, while lacking any sort of sincerity whatsoever).

99.999% of people i think are dishonest, self centered and insincere. you couldn't get through life without these qualities in abundance.

I like how you say that as if it's a joke, when there are billions of human beings in the world who are unable to achieve their sexual desires. The rules and expectations put in place by human society make it extremely difficult for all people to get what they want. It only caters to a smaller selection.

I love people who use language properly. People who mean everything that they say in the way that it was said. I choose my language carefully when i am talking because i try to convey a precise meaning. It annoys the fuck out of me when i do that and someone else interprets what i said like an asshole and bastardizes what i have said. my mother is the worst for this.

It is a joke, and I like how you think you are qualified to speak for billions of humans and their relative ability to achieve their sexual desires.

I also particularly enjoy that you think achieving your sexual desire is a serious problem.

edit: I also wasn't aware that there was one human society with rules and expectations that are the same globally. Thanks for pointing that out.

I am not "speaking for billions of humans", I am pointing out that many of them have unfulfilled desires. I do not have to be "qualified" to point this out.

You heard it here first, folks - achieving your sexual desires is not a serious problem!

Whoa, whoa. Slow down Professor Youtube comment. When did I say there was one human society? There are thousands of them. What I'm trying to point out is that in most societies, there are people who cannot achieve their goals - not just sexually, but in many other ways. And this is because it is a part of human nature to create boundaries in their society, which prevent full and complete freedom of their instincts, including the desire for sex.

You need to get over your first impressions of me, chenGOD. You've known me for years, yet you seem to think I'm exactly the same.

if you don't have unfulfilled desires, you aren't aiming high enough

these days people think they are owed too much. the universe doesn't owe you anything. it gave you a life. that should be plenty of a gift. it's up to you to do something with it.

I don't know you at all. I have never met you. I don't know about your morality, your thought processes, your education, your standard of living or your sexual desires.

To answer your question highlighted in bold above - look at the part I highlighted in the quote below.

You are speaking for billions of people when you say this: "there are billions of human beings in the world who are unable to achieve their sexual desires". How do you know what their sexual desires are, and whether or not they are able to achieve them?

And yeah achieving sexual desire is not a huge problem. You want huge problems? How about making sure you have enough food and water to fee you and your family for the day. About 2 billion people around the world live in those conditions.

How about trying to make sure your kid isn't kidnapped by some militia organization to fight so that the leaders of the militia can profit? Countries like Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Colombia, Sierra Leone, Somalia as examples all struggle with that problem.

I haven't even started talking about relative poverty. So yeah, achieving your sexual desires ranks pretty goddamned low on the list of things to worry about.

Without knowing exactly what you mean; what about the biology and 'social darwinism' that, I believe, are not up to us? Which boundaries do you mean and they have to be created by us or can they be a natural evolution of our primal instincts for beauty, power hierarchy and such?

I agree, but I also think people can be handed really shitty cards, like mental problems, illnesses or other crap that prevents them. I believe that life isn't always a gift, but hey, I'm not /sure/

This was the "favorite qualities in humans"-thread, right? Hey Rhombix, how about starting your own "least favorite qualities" thread?
