New Warp Signing - My Best Fiend

WARP's got a new signing, "My Best Fiend" - you can download a free track as well as listen to another off their debut album. Sorta sounds like MGMT at times, but nothing remarkable (IMO).

This gives me hope. Hope that I can get signed to Warp, if their signing any old shite.

It's okay. Nothing to scoff at, but you'd think Warp would want to sign stuff that isn't generic. Since that's supposed to be their M.O.

their M.O. at the moment seems to be 'stay afloat'

let's be honest - IDM is dead, and has been for a long time. only a few stalwarts are putting stuff out on Warp that is regarded as IDM. the label has changed focus, and we're not the target audience anymore.

Cover made me think it was gonna sound like boards.

I thought it was boards the first time my eyes glanced over it.

I didn't mean they should just have IDM on their roster, the novelty wore off long, long ago. I guess lots of us overestimate how much clout Warp really has the independent music world.

Edit: Actually they do have some clout, and they're probably doing what any of us would do if we owned a label.

however, they're still mostly an electronic / experimental label, so wtf is this shit.

they really put out some odd stuff every now and again. and this isn't odd in a good (interesting) way.

they are, like you say, just trying to stay afloat and current, which for most electronic/experimental/IDM fans makes them shit.

Thats how a new BoC cover will look like.

again, i don't really hate skrillex as much as i hate the people that think that sort of music has any sort of integrity. i try to be open minded, and a lot of the time i employ a "well, each to his/her own" attitude towards personal preferences such as music taste and who knows, maybe it is original in its own way, sorta like a drawing by an autistic kid.

IDM in name only is dead, it's spirit lives on

I was going to listen to this and feel depressed, but I just realized the "pun" in the band name and now I can't even click on it. Groans, shoots self in face, etc.

sounds ok to me. would like to hear it in the context of a full album.

Yeah it's quite lovely but completely deviod of anything interesting or novel musically - sounds like something I'd hear, check out online, then kind of forget. I'm curious to hear the rest just to see if this is a safe "single" and therefore an exception. Probably not though. When it comes to Warp signings, this is probably more of a Born Ruffians signing than say a talented group like Battles or even Grizzly Bear

I dunno...doesn't really seem that way to me, from my perspective. But that's just me.

I suppose that one is probably a subjective thing? Where does the iddum spirit live on?
