to be honest the Bronfman folks don't seem too egregious by billionaire standards, if there's any degree to which someone can be a billionaire and not egregious. I think the guy she married is seriously invested in sustainable geotech, engineering and biofuels, which actually has potential to help third world people.

edit: granted, the guy's dad headed vivendi universal, right? that's pretty egregious, lol. But the guy she's marrying seems to be relatively decent.

Her style is unique and she's been doing it since 2005 and probably long before that too. No one else sounds like her. I appreciate she's not a technically great mc but the thing is technical doesn't always win. You need style, substance and a decent message to go with that and she has that in abundance. Now if you compare her to all the other uk female mcs which are reasonable well known its all this tough street talk vibe which I dunno just feels a little too forced and aggressive imo. And the reality is none of them have broken big and its really because between them they haven't really made a decent record!

I have no qualms about anyone being loaded with trust fund money, in fact I'm one to defend the sincerely hard-working rich who engage in philanthropy and avoid making friends in political office who get lumped in with the greedy and corrupt. Still, when she of all people became engaged to him it was kinda like "fucking seriously!?" - especially once she lent "paper planes" to be used in that fucking lameass Michael Moore doc about capitalism, you know the one with a 20 million dollar budget that he insisted be released and distributed through a major Hollywod film studio. Was just kind of baffled by the hypocrisy of it all.

I thought the song was decent but I didn't like the video. I think I'd enjoy the song more just listening to it.

Um. No. She only hit it big because she was trying to take what she absorbed from Kevin Martin (The Bug) and make it mainstream and diluted.

She also writes shit lyrics and is a yawnable live performer.

I saw her at The Creators Project in NYC a year or two ago. Die Antwoord were opening for her and when she got on stage afterword, the contrast was staggering. She had a stage full of loony tunes dancing around like doofuses while she just stumbled around in her hoodie, mumbling into the mic.

As for the video... nothing special. Overproduced and offensive to Muslims, at best.

As someone who digs her first albums and wishes the best, I am inclined to agree with you. She's got some great qualities but when it comes to issues that she stirs up she has on a few occasions ended up seeming naive. Her style is great, but I'm left wishing for content with a little more meat to chew on, maybe some nuance to it; something more substantial and less superficial.

Oh well. She's got plenty of time to develop. Hell; it took the Bee Gees something like nine albums over 8 years to become to group I know and love today. DItto for Tom Waits. That guy's like a fine wine. Artists need time to develop, especially in an age where people (especially labels) are less willing to invest in the long term.

Yeah that's a good breakdown. Well put, I'd agree with that. I was a big fan of piracy funds terrorism and arular, kala was hit or miss and from there I've been a big skeptic, mostly playing out her remixes more than anything. I dunno, there's been a lot more future bass and garage and guys like dj /rupture and diplo (though his taste is iffy at times) that appeal to me more.

This, and it's actually more simple than that. Switch and Diplo produce her tunes 100%, and any other collaboration she heads has very little substantive input from her. She's a great "director." She curates a sound and image, but doesn't create anything original. She's not in a class of her own, she's just commanding the best of a plethora of genres.

Her choices of imagery and music production style are the only things that set her apart from present day "divas" like Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, etc. Like Lana Del Ray, I think she's fun to cheer and jeer, and endlessly defend or criticize. I find her "political" aspect extraordinarily annoying, because she's ignorant and very misleading when she speaks about Sri Lanka and the War On Terror. She talks a lot of shit, references things like the LTTE and PLO, but instead of acknowledging why she does so, or simply admit it's for shock value and ironic aesthetics, she bitches about how people are to get her personally. She basically whines a lot and then plays the "I'm a voice for the 3rd world and Tamils and poor people or whatever" card. It's an endless loop of self-indulgence and obviousness. I know she'll bitch about the middle finger incident at the superbowl and blame everyone and talk about a conspiracy then "write" an album about it blah blah blah. Like the guy from Decemberists tweeted, "she's the Glenn Beck of the left." I'll go one further and say she's more like the Sarah Palin of left-winger worldwide. It's all in the name of raising awareness or opening discussions, but it fails to do either sincerely.

At the end of the day, she's not groundbreaking, she's just a perpetually vocal artist on the quest to be "edgy." She's the Madonna of the 00s, except with all the OI GALANG GALANG GALANG 3RD WURLD DEHMOCKRAZEH I'll keep an ear open for her new stuff. Like any other easy-to-hate artist, there's no point in rallying against them.
