Saw this video for the first time on Saturday and I gotta say I was totally blown away. This is probably the best 'pop' tune of the last 5 years. It totally trampels over all the other crap out there!!

You obviously haven't heard of Lana del Rey.

I'm suprised that Switch and Diplo produced this. I gotta say I'm not a big fan of Diplo but if he's making her music then its good in my eyes although I'm some what suprised lol.

"Bad Girls" was produced by Timbaland Jr. Danja. Switch and Diplo did the first two albums, and Rusko and Blaqstarr produced songs on Maya. Sorry for being misleading.

aphex twins's windowlicker is better. no white limo mia?, ok mia you just use white beemers

wheres the whips and chains? they got the guns in there though. whatever about showing rihanna to the kids, just don't show this one to the taliban.

they don't like girls, do they like anyone

I remember being flabbergasted when everyone was gushing over how awesome MIA is. Glad to see people are finally coming around.

same here. lana del rey is pretty terrible, i don't see the appeal.

Somebody earlier mentioned she is a first world problem. I think that sums her up tbh. She should perhaps be in the fashion industry instead of the music biz? It would suit her better.

As someone who digs her first albums and wishes the best, I am inclined to agree with you. She's got some great qualities but when it comes to issues that she stirs up she has on a few occasions ended up seeming naive. Her style is great, but I'm left wishing for content with a little more meat to chew on, maybe some nuance to it; something more substantial and less superficial.

Yeah that's a good breakdown. Well put, I'd agree with that. I was a big fan of piracy funds terrorism and arular, kala was hit or miss and from there I've been a big skeptic, mostly playing out her remixes more than anything. I dunno, there's been a lot more future bass and garage and guys like dj /rupture and diplo (though his taste is iffy at times) that appeal to me more.

w/e haters, i think it's solid. i'm glad she isn't changing her style to trance stabs and other cheese like most pop stars.

My thoughts exactly! She's really in a class of her own.

don't hate her, I'm just thoroughly annoyed by her.

This, and it's actually more simple than that. Switch and Diplo produce her tunes 100%, and any other collaboration she heads has very little substantive input from her. She's a great "director." She curates a sound and image, but doesn't create anything original. She's not in a class of her own, she's just commanding the best of a plethora of genres.

Her choices of imagery and music production style are the only things that set her apart from present day "divas" like Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, etc. Like Lana Del Ray, I think she's fun to cheer and jeer, and endlessly defend or criticize. I find her "political" aspect extraordinarily annoying, because she's ignorant and very misleading when she speaks about Sri Lanka and the War On Terror. She talks a lot of shit, references things like the LTTE and PLO, but instead of acknowledging why she does so, or simply admit it's for shock value and ironic aesthetics, she bitches about how people are to get her personally. She basically whines a lot and then plays the "I'm a voice for the 3rd world and Tamils and poor people or whatever" card. It's an endless loop of self-indulgence and obviousness. I know she'll bitch about the middle finger incident at the superbowl and blame everyone and talk about a conspiracy then "write" an album about it blah blah blah. Like the guy from Decemberists tweeted, "she's the Glenn Beck of the left." I'll go one further and say she's more like the Sarah Palin of left-winger worldwide. It's all in the name of raising awareness or opening discussions, but it fails to do either sincerely.

At the end of the day, she's not groundbreaking, she's just a perpetually vocal artist on the quest to be "edgy." She's the Madonna of the 00s, except with all the OI GALANG GALANG GALANG 3RD WURLD DEHMOCKRAZEH I'll keep an ear open for her new stuff. Like any other easy-to-hate artist, there's no point in rallying against them.

also, she is not the "madonna of the 00s." you're talking out of your ass and know nothing about pop music.

also, she is not the "madonna of the 00s." you're talking out of your ass and know nothing about pop music.

I'll go ahead and respond.

who gives a shit about m.i.a's politics?

1. Everyone. Try to find any review, bio, or promotional piece that doesn't mention her politics. There are a plethora of well-cited paragraphs solely dedicated to discussing her political commentary on wikipedia. Try to find any interview where she actually explains why she plasters Tamil Tiger imagery in a music video, instead of dodging the question and whining about oppression and fear and some other half-baked rhetoric you could hear from any naive college student.

why does that affect the way you hear her music?

2. It doesn't affect my listening completely but I'm mindful of it. Like I said, I enjoy a good portion of her discography. Hell, I listen to Burzum even though he's a lunatic murderer, but I don't embrace the fact that he is. Unlike M.I.A., who keeps controversy at the core of her artistry, he actually tries to distance himself from his past infamy, whereas plenty of people flock to him solely because of his notoriety. She feeds off that to get listeners (and that's fine) but then plays the "I'm not trying to be a popstar" card, which is the aggravating part. It's not her that's the problem, it's how much she contradicts herself and the lengths people go to defend that.

also, she is not the "madonna of the 00s." you're talking out of your ass and know nothing about pop music.

3. How is she not like Madonna? It's not a rhetorical question, I'd like to hear another opinion. I wrote this because I think they share some similar ethos as artists, it's not a blanket insult. Oh, and I'm actually ranting out of my ass, for the record.

In this case, the onus is on you to provide more than one sentence on why you think they are similar. There are a thousand ways in which she is not Madonna. There are a thousand ways in which my mother is not Madonna. To ask the question in this manner is backwards and you first need to illustrate your comparison better for this to turn out as anything other than some highly ambiguous argument where nothing is defined.

Yeah that's my weakest argument/point.

Madonna and M.I.A. have a knack for appropriating other styles and putting out something that's clearly them. Madonna had house, new wave, and eurodance style singles, M.I.A. has used baile funk, grime, and dancehall in hers. They've both been edgy and controversial without really pushing the boundaries in their music (compared to say, someone like Bjork), their tracks are always rooted in pop. Neither can be pinned down in a specific scene or genre. Madonna was controversial for issues that were arguably more of a hot button in the late 80s/early 90s: sex, gay culture, religion. M.I.A. references the War On Terror, globalization, and art in the digital age, which are all things that trigger fierce and complicated debates. Neither of them have done something as socially looked down as say, I dunno, tear a picture of the pope on live TV, or get arrested for some kind of political protest. And I will admit I find M.I.A. a quite bit less annoying as a mother and as someone who actually runs a legit music label, instead of pushing Kabbalah braces and making really shitty films.

I can't really get more specific than that, so essentially I'll back down from that claim. And I'm open to hear about M.I.A. being compared or contrasted to someone as polarizing...besides Lana Del Rey :emotawesomepm9:

That's Romain Gavras for you. A very good director who makes epic videos very well.

This is another one of his that's pretty boss:

http://vimeo.com/9357434

Also, I've still got to see his film. It has Vincent Cassel and the soundtrack was the last decent thing Sebastian has done.

MIA has always struck me as a no-talent one-hit wonder. I kind of like Rihanna, she seems to have a good ear for interesting pop sounds, plus she's clearly a damaged slut.

After this I listened to geogaddi and I didn't like it, I was quite vomitting at some tracks, I realized they were too crazy for my ears, they took too much acid to play music I stupidly thought (cliché of psyché music) But I knew this album was a kind of big forest where I just wasn't able to go inside.

I was in US tjis summer, and eat in KFC. FUCK That's the worst thing i've ever eaten. The flesh simply doesn't cleave to the bones. Battery ferming. And then, foie gras is banned from NY state, because it's considered as ill-treat. IT'S NOT. KFC is tourist ill-treat. YOU POISONERS! Two hours after being to KFC, i stopped in a amsih little town barf all that KFC shit out. Nice work!

So i hope this woman is not like kfc chicken, otherwise she'll be pulled to pieces.
