i'm on the dev preview and haven't run into a show stopper yet, but it's not the iPad 3 - there's not much to get excited about really. notifications are pretty much Growl and wow you get to post directly to Twitter from most apps without signing in multiple times. But that doesn't fundamentally change how you use the OS, it just feels like a more complete 10.7.

Airplay Mirroring should be good, though i haven't an Apple TV, or a TV or projector, but getting one could be an alternative to buying multiple display adapters..

regarding the merge of iOS on OS X... do you really see that happening? they're most definitely not going to open up iOS, and there has to be a General Purpose Computer for devs, because apps have to be made somehow.

so it's more likely they'll just continue what they started and have a shared OS foundation with user-layers tuned to device purpose, imo.

and yeah, this came from absolutely nowhere.

PowerPC?

nope - core duo.

my G3 before that was a PowerPC. I loved that tower. Shame that OS 8.6 was such a crashy shitpile.

Merging of iOS and OSX - in some senses it is happening - similar apps (remember when they were called programs?) better ability to communicate among your devices. But OSX on the desktop is not going to totally become iOS.

yeah

i'll say, out of my ass, that it will take at least 3 or 4 years until there will be good enough tools, not tiny-wink-apps, but tools, for making sufficiently professional media (audio, video, apps, websites...) on a thing like the iPad so that Big Computers aren't needed anymore. Then they can begin phasing out OS X.

there's this cars versus trucks analogy by Steve Jobs right? Does it make sense to you merging all trucks and cars into minivans? then you don't have a truck anymore when you really feel you need one.

Apple doesn't want to sell you a minivan and be happy with it. They want to sell you a motorbike, a beach buggy for your girlfriend, a racing car, and a truck. Together, these vehicles can merrily drive around Apple land. The factory which makes these things is being tuned to be very efficient at churning out each of these, and trucks are an important part of the logistics.

i god i got carried away.....

are you serious? they're already doing that.

They've completely gimped Final Cut Pro, they're likely to do the same with Logic. There's already talk about Apple dropping the Mac Pro line of computers...

what was that you were saying about cars versus trucks, and merging into minivans?

The new Final Cut Pro is awesome and more powerful the FCP9. The problem is Apple should have named it like "Vector Movie Studio" and sold it alongside Final Cut Pro. Personally I neved used FCP9 so my panties are bunchless.

yes they should've sold it as a separate product. The very fact that they didn't means that their focus has changed to the 'prosumer' market.

The whole 'getting rid of the Mac Pro' could very well be just rumour, but at this point I really wouldn't put it past them to get rid of it. Apple are going for consumers, not content creators.

i just don't think Apple has a master-plan for merging their OSes into one, that would be such a mega effort. They're advancing them in parallel and see what happens, and are happy that both bring the profits. Along the way, they try to establish a synergy between them. So far, it has worked out really well, mostly. Sometimes it hasn't (awful full-screen mode in Lion among others).

They obviously want quality content on their iOS devices, most importantly apps. As of now, you need OS X machines with keyboards and big screens, Xcode and other auxiliary tools to make apps.

iOS doesn't seem to be headed in a direction where you can seriously consider making apps on an iPad. The devices don't look like it, the App Store economics don't, the OS itself doesn't allow for any serious production workflow.. whereas OS X machines get more mobile and powerful.. i mean it's not like i can do less with my 11" Macbook Air (running the truck OS) than with a huge box that's tied to a desk (and the truck OS).

Prior to OS X there was application software which was often referred to popularly as "programs". I don't recall the word "app" coming into popular usage until "app stores" started to become popular (and Apple was not the first app store).

As i said - application software - popularly referred to as programs. I heard them called programs from the Apple ][ all the way up through OS 8.6

I don't remember people saying - oh you've got to get that application Pro Tools/Photoshop...I dunno though, I've been high a lot since then so...lol
