Just take every full lenght release by Aphex Twin and rate them on a scale from one to ten.

Here is for me:

Selected Ambient Works 85-92 - 10/10 - Perfect Album.

Selected Ambient Works Vol. II - 9/10 - Great, but some songs annoy the shit out of me.

I Care Because You Do - 10/10 - Perfect Album, really psychedelic.

Richard D. James Album - 10/10 - Same as ICBYD.

Druqks - 9/10 - Great, extremely experimental.

Selected Ambient Works 85-92 - boring repetetive music for grandads .... do not get this one at all 1/10 for trying

Selected Ambient Works Vol. II - imagine waiting for a bus for 2 hours then multiply that by going to the dentist - totally nondescript 0/10

I Care Because You Do - moments of mediocrity in an otherwise average blend of blandness. turned it off midway through track 3

Richard D. James Album - lol nice cover and the milkman one is pretty good for about 2 minutes. reminds me of fatboy slim in places so deserves a solid 4/10

Druqks - wtf... this is like classical music from 1000 years ago mixed with kitchen sounds.... totally incomprehensible... had to go to the toilet about 5 times during the first track alone... 2.5/10

I haven't yet given 26 Mixes for Cash a good enough listen, but big kudos to him for remixing The Beatniks. I expect it'll be an 8-9/10.

Selected Ambient Works Vol. II - Media overexposed and still sounds fresh. B+

I Care Because You Do - Dated garbage. Alberto Balsam saves it from being a total failure. D

Richard D. James Album - Dated garbage, no redeeming qualities. F

Druqks - Horribly dated, sounds so 2000, still it's not like it was that great when it came out save for Vordhosbn which is excelent. C

ps: RDJA gets an F? I wonder if this is the same disconnect I get with things like Incunabula, which I like but most(?) Autechre fans find dated. Probably something to do with having listened to similar sounding stuff back when it was released, vs. discovering it 15/20 years later.

SAW8592- Good but I find it's enjoyability diminishes around Side C and Side D. 7.5

SAWII- One of my favorite albums ever. A few of the tracks don't do it for me but that's all. solid 9.7. If it weren't for Track3 and Track19 I'd have to give it a 7.8

ICBYD- I feel so conflicted with this one. Some tracks are superb but some are shit. Take Acrid for example, great track. A few song later, you get Start As You Mean Go On, which I think I'd just total shit. It sounds good slowed down, but if you do that, it goes on even longer... ugh. I'll give it a 5.8

RDJA- A few shitty tracks, but good. 7

Drukqs- superb fucking tracks, but it's filled with like 10 pointless and/or half-hearted interludes. Ziggomatic is unforgettable. 8.5

What's with the RDJA hate?

Just going by the general sound of an album, I think I Care Because You Do... is the best one.

The only track I think doesn't belong is Come On You Slags. It's just a bit too sinister and the vocal sample makes it stick out.

I was just looking at critics' ratings of random Aphex albums out of curiosity and damn, I never knew 26 Mixes for Cash got such good reviews. I'm not going to hate on it, but I recall just wishing it would end back when I was listening to RDJ stuff chronologically. Maybe I should give it another go, but I don't recall there being a single track I'd go back to.

Also, assuming the Lemonheads remix anecdote the Aphex Twin FAQ mentions is true, I'm surprised the album exists at all given that it seems he doesn't take remixes all that seriously, at least some of the time...

Jeez really? I'm honestly not a huge fan of the album either, but there are 2 or 3 gems on that album. The Heroes Symphony is probably my favorite.

I heard the Windowlicker Acid Edit and that NIN remix on Top Gear the other day.

Maybe I'll give it another listen, that was at least 6 months ago anyway. To be honest it was more of a "what the fuck?" reaction to the fact that Allmusic gave it 5 stars, which according to them apparently means it's better than Windowlicker, SAW2 and RDJA. Not that I care about Allmusic, or reviews in general, but it's still amusing. The Guardian gave it three stars, which seems a bit more reasonable.
