Come on it's not that bad. I hate that site as much as anybody here. But just use it for all the communication with people you wouldnt talk with otherwise and either don't read anything on that frontpage or block everybody who's posting shit. Not much harm this way.

is it rude to deny friend requests?

No but it could get tricky. I once denied my cousin's friend request and it became the big topic on the Christmas family dinner, my mum forced to accept her friend request because she wouldn't stop crying.

This.

Also, can we poke your aunts baph?

My aunt really did post that image, but the one I posted was an analogous situation found via image search and doesn't show my aunt's name.

You can still poke, if you want.

Any time I see someone's parents comment on their facebook status I am in my happy place

i basically just use facebook to keep in touch with close friends who i no longer live near/never lived near

it's great for that

though i suppose i have been using it with school people lately. but no family. never. never ever. nerver. i categorically deny any and all friend requests from family and keep most of my shit private so that i can plausibly deny it "oh i never use facebook sorry, i should just delete that thing!"

All I'm saying is once I got 300 angry family requests I abandoned facebook for all intents and purposes and it basically became a virtual placeholder for the calculated neutral expression I usually have to wear during family reunions and holiday dinners.

I disabled mine, because I wasn't really using it for anything other than accepting invites to parties and stuff. I'm probably missing out on some parties now. DAMN. Also, my pictures were too old and in them I was hanging out with people I don't hang out with anymore, which is a MAJOR misrepresentation of my life you know? I untagged myself in all my pictures, deleted all of my information, but my profile lies dormant and invisible until I sign back in.

And I do sign back on for like 20 minutes at a time to basically spy on people or see if I'm missing out on anything important. It seems like after college people don't use facebook much at all anymore. Maybe it's just me, but it seems so much less popular now. I think some people reach a point where they just get too crowded and don't like people snooping on them or want to read another pointless status update. Unnecessary noise and clutter. With disabling Facebook comes peace.

I use facebook to chat with FRIENDS and make plans, sometimes to college related stuff and also to follow artists and shit so I know everything on the spot.

again, i don't really hate skrillex as much as i hate the people that think that sort of music has any sort of integrity. i try to be open minded, and a lot of the time i employ a "well, each to his/her own" attitude towards personal preferences such as music taste and who knows, maybe it is original in its own way, sorta like a drawing by an autistic kid.

are a lot of watmmers Facebook friends as well?

I have a few people from watmm on facebook.. Though it's getting a little out of hand since I've been getting requests lately from people who are mutual friends with other watmmers, but I can't figure out who the fuck they are. For example, who the fuck is Lenistwo Mc?

Seriously guys, if you're gonna add me on facebook, tell me who you are on watmm.

I don't really care much; jules wanted to be discouraged so I'm just making the demographic shift on Facebook known.

When I first signed up for Facebook it was still thefacebook.com and it was limited to college students, and it served a pretty nice niche as I could keep in touch with far away friends in a sort of discrete, compartmentalized way. I liked that.

Now Facebook is trying to be everything to everyone online. I'm not averse to change, and the familial God Goatses make me lol, but it's a bit tedious that not adding a family member (or something) is, like, a significant act of disrespect because Facebook is Teh Internets. Take it or leave it.

I still have an account because it's useful as that sort of neutral social placeholder, because Facebook's demographic shift has weirdly made it necessary to have that sort of neutral social placeholder. But I didn't want to please everyone when I signed up in '05 or whenever it was.

The end result is I'm just ambivalent on Facebook.

Julesy as a fellow dad I'm pretty sure it's the last thing you need. IMHO the way to go (or at least try to go) is to interact more with the important people in your life directly/conventionally, and not to add some additional abstraction/compartmentalization layer that also happens to be a massive time suck.

More impartantly, I wouldn't want you to have to part ways with either your family or watmm to make room for it

Believe it or not most dudes our age on facebook envy us who aren't. I envy us. :sorcerer:

I had my cousin on facebook, removed him because he constantly either posts stuff about his kids or his shitty cover band, and then he added me again, aaargh

There is a whole discussion group aspect to FB which is what I do more of than comment on friends and families posts. Rather than find forums on the web for any given subject and register one can simply find a FB group and join it.

who cares, it's just something to check for 2 minutes then go back to watmm

lolz, this

I got on facebook back in its nascent days in 2004. My roommate told me about it. I friended him, one other close friend who had it, and a handful of people in high school I had like one class with but shared a mutual and stupid "oh cool we're on facebook" mentality that lead to "friending." It was a "big deal" that my school was among the networks, instead of just Ivy Leagues. A ton of universities (especially private ones) had their own networks in the meantime, since being added was a gradual occurrence. Back then there were no wall posts, chat features, or linking to external sites, etc. Everything was confined to networks in regards to facebook "groups." Instead of pages to "like" everything was text only. If you listed, say, "Wesley Willis" in you list of favorite music, you'd click it and it'd show everyone in your network who liked Wesley Willis. Then they let networks interact. Then came high schools. Then came the myspace crowd. (Use of LJ and xanga for me died off.) Then came *gasp* parents. (I assume used of Classmates.com has died off.) I've opened a twitter account just I don't have to worry about my mom being confused by my more absurd, edgy, and non-sequitur musings. But like disparaissant said, it's nice to use when finding and chatting with old friends.

I would get it if you want to, well, watch what your friends and family are doing. If you want to share photos - get flicker. Post snarky comments - twitter. Blog cool shit - tumblr. If you're looking at professional social networking page I guess there's google+ and linkedin ( I guess, I never use there personally). That said, I won't get rid of FB because it's a easy and immediate way to see and share photos, messages, and links quickly with single friends or multiple people. And I've begun trimming my friend list to people I actually know. I haven't had any issues denying anyone or deleting anyone (i.e. people from high school I naively friended).

And drama does occur. I've was deleted by a relative because my comment pissed him off (something about how Glenn Beck shouldn't bitch about being harassed in NYC when he's a professional troll.) Oh well, he was the kind of asshole who deleted comments that made him look stupid anyway . And since we saw each other at a wedding we're back in contact. My buddy who went into basic training had a girlfriend who was posting really odd and occasionally bitchy shit on his wall while he was offline for weeks. It was embarrassing for her and a headache for him (they ended up breaking up, which they should of done to begin with). Political and religious crap gets annoying, and it's always from acquaintances or relatives you can't not friend. But you can essentially "block" it. Personally my experience with that seems rather low, but then again I'm not exactly close to the kind of crowds you'd see on lamebook.

The one thing I think a lot of people do, without admitting it, is simply watch the lives of mere acquaintances or distant relatives without directly contacting them. On the flipside, my interaction with my close friends who I see often IRL consists of swapping meme links, jokes, and occasionally chatting. If you get facebook, just use it in moderation. People get hooked by over-friending, over-commenting, and reacting to every stupid and ignorant post they see in their feed. Feed options like "hide story" or "hide person's posts" are really helpful. I had to I actually swore myself off commenting and reading any political posts last week b/c some of the "views" of a few people I know are just that infuriating. Also, put everything on private immediately and back off to your comfort level. I commented on some news article and noticed my work info showed up. Had no idea that was applicable. FB's changes all the time so keep and eye out.

Last but not least, fan George Takei. He posts silly shit all day. It's more of a meme archive than a celebrity account. Good luck, whatever you do!

I'm with baph and ivan ooze on this.

Deleted my account 5-6 moths ago, and have never missed it. The demographic shift is one thing. My friends who earlier posted music and other cool stuff, have almost stopped using it. Instead, my feed is filled up with pictures of kids of friends I rarely speak to. I just realised that I had stopped using facebook to keep in touch with people, and because I became more self-aware after reading all those shitty status updates, I never posted anything myself. Instead I checked my feed every second day, and it just annoyed me. The security issues is another thing. The default settings is ever changing and have become more open, and I see a lot of people who share everything with everyone because they simply doesn't understand the security setting.

When my android phone bugged me about getting the newest facebook-app, and I realised that I had to let it access my text messages, I just quit. Instead I've signed up to G+ where some of my music nerd friends post cool stuff. Not many active users though.

i only have it look at funny shit posted by morons, im hoping one day ill see something so stupid that i can post it on reddit and win lots of karma, because thats how i judge my life, internet points.
