I don't say its like that, especially in this case, but its very possible AND doable. Internet propaganda and viral videos are the new thing to influence the masses. If you were informed about the influence of China in Africa in the last 10 years at least you wouldnt say that with such an assertive tone.

No doubt, but I really think it's just a bunch of fauxtivist hipsters in this case

Maybe worse. Theres actually no way of prohibiting making viral videos to raise funds for a cause with uncertain success through the internet. Its the perfect business, they may have some serious millions by now.

again, i don't really hate skrillex as much as i hate the people that think that sort of music has any sort of integrity. i try to be open minded, and a lot of the time i employ a "well, each to his/her own" attitude towards personal preferences such as music taste and who knows, maybe it is original in its own way, sorta like a drawing by an autistic kid.

personally I think hipsterrunoff is the best.

3 cheers for Invisible Children though. the criticisms are on point but still, I can't help but think there in the end what they're doing is better than nothing.

I wish somebody would launch a military intervention in Hipster Runoff.

It made me laugh, and they always speak on both sides without taking a position. It's a good read for me...

$8,676,610 can buy a lot of toilets, clean water and sanitation...surely a lack of those has killed more Ugandans lately than this guy

So they'll kill Kony, but then what? It's like cutting the head off a hydra..

the two sides of this argument/support structure both have revealed incredibly disturbing elements within our societies. On one hand, Kony is a brutal dictator, and any action against him in this sense could be considered "good". But like the wigga said earlier, it didn't start with Kony, and it won't end with Kony. But how do we address the root of the problems?

Im not a bleeding heart liberal, but its absolutely true and cannot be emphasized enough when I say Africa is a completely fucked continent. Colonization, historical revisionism, collapse of culture and local autonomous ethnic groups and rearrangement/forced assimilation into others, AIDS epidemic, poverty, etc. etc. on and on and on. Getting rid of the "corrupt leaders" doesn't address the fact that these leaders come from a particular background that is propped up by consistent outside interference from the US, the old European imperial powers, China, Korea, ad nauseum, and from within their own irrevocably altered cultural self-awareness.

On the other hand, I do find it incredibly disturbing how people react to Invisible Children and this "slacktivist" project. Decent criticism is one thing (dis and a couple other members made really good points), but dismissal of the whole thing as a "hipster" movement is ludicrous...I don't even know where to begin with how little sense that makes. At the same time, those accusers throwing down the mighty pwnhammer of "you are watching a movie and doing nothing to realistically change the problem" is completely hypocritical. Suggest alternatives? Suggest other possible gameplans to reorganize and recover this long dying continent? Maybe do something else other than pull some armchair proselytizing? I personally find it sort of disgusting that people attempt to seem detached and informed about the "realism" of a given political situation from a faux-nihilist perspective. It's dishonest, it's dishonorable, and worst of all it encourages this snarky, overly-cynical detached intellectualism.

Intellect don't mean shit if you don't do anything with it.

Well that video certainly didn't pander to mine or anyone else's intellect. At the very least however (just like occupy and all the rest) it has opened up dialog for intelligent conversation amongst folk, discussing more broadly the complexity of the issue/s and what not. Yeah it's way too easy to be a condescending cynical prick about it while adding nothing constructive, but at the same time, liking a video on facebook isn't really all that proactive either. Guess it's spread the message pretty quickly though

Well, you want to help Africa? Build schools, and make the music industry stop the gangsta rap shit. Thats pretty much it.

It's kinda funny how gangsta rap loves the bling, must feel pretty 'G' to hold your African brothers down so that you are able to afford 'ice' and shiny things

Its not just that. Its a cultural problem. Young africans look forward to successful african-americans. And the example most of them give is very simple and straightforward: get rich or die trying, the bling is the only thing that matters get pussy etc.

And this is a real problem because thats the only thing they listen to besides national music and celine dion....

What pisses me of about this is that some people are just using this as self branding (like anything else on facebook)

"Look at this video with these poor Ugandan kids, look at how deep and considering I am of other people for posting this, and look at how cool and up-to-date I am for following this new internet trend".

NO, you don't really give a shit. And you're centainly not going to do anything about it other than linking to a fucking youtube video.

I'm not saying this is true for all people at all. But I certainly know a couple of people on my facebook friendlist that's been posting this, who would never spend any money on charities or anything similar.
