I FINALLY found a metal band that I F***in love

Yeah, so after asking people time and time and time again on here about trying to get into metal (dont get me wrong, I got a ton of great recommendations but they usually only had a track or two that I liked..Gorgoroth and some 80s metal in particular), but GODDAMN is Meshuggah not the most IDM metal ever? FUCKING AWESOME

[youtubehd]qc98u-eGzlc[/youtubehd]

Check out this song and its idmness manifests in various ways:

1) The guitar part sounds like its being played like a fucking satanic sitar

2) The rhythms are constantly changing (listen carefully to the progression of the bass triplets)

3) The lyrics are incredibly abstract and usually have either scientific references or even more abstract religious references

4) The Drummer is. Fucking. Amazing.

5)The end sounds like something off of a Plaid album.

6) The bass triplets sound like a rhythm line from an old Aphex Twin track (the hardcore techno stuff, 92-95)

Goddamnit posted before I could finish...but the best part is that this isn't even near their best track (but definitely impressive. They even have jazzy solo sections.

Only on Catch Thirtythree

if they are programmed thats further evidence of the IDMness, but I saw a live clip and it looked like the guy was actually footing those triplets. I could be wrong though. It does seem inhuman to maintain a beat that rigid.

i was with this, diggin it really hard until the vocals came in..that guy sounds too much like cookie monster...i dunno...certain elements of metal really turn me off if they dont hit a very, very specific feel.

Meshuggah's singer is understandable and has just the right amount of fury? i spose.

i love this, just frederik and morgan

man i love the mathyness of it all. Ive never heard a metal band so self-aware of the rhythmic progressions in their songs.

And imo, it's they're worst album. No wonder they haven't blown you away. I appreciate what they were going for, but it's just so monotonous. A couple cool parts here and there don't make up for the whole.

BTW Smettingham, I'm always glad to hear of someone new getting into Meshuggah. They're first album had some epic jazzy/groove elements:

Thomas Haake is a beast on drums. The whole thing is basically composed by Fredrik Thordendal. Fockin' proper math metal. The vocalist is also one of the most brutal I've heard. I hate when they sound like cookie monsters :/

Koloss is amazing. They never cease to impress me... I was really preparing for a disappointment.

Animals as leaders is great. Periphery is also great (minus vocals... instrumentals are available). Glad you found some good metal.

Oh... They've cited Squarepusher as an inspiration.

The vocals are the breath of egyptian wargods or a mumie that just woke pissed up, you can understand everything they say if you read the lyrics once and they are fucking great, Nile is all aboot egyptian mythology

This album destroys everything and I really recommand it to everyone who loves music

Please buy that album. There are only two "metal" songs on it. It has everything.
