Liturgy and The Locust are both super-IDM metal bands, although Liturgy is regarded as super hipster and The Locust is closer to noise rock than IDM. But I love them both.

black sabbath

Yup. Black Sabbath is the fucking shit...but I don't even consider them metal...their first four or five albums completely transcend genre for me. Fucking amazing.

Im a huge fan of The Locust...went to see them live around Amherst when Plague Landscapes was coming out...they had this really weird/hilarious stage act, throwing condoms and balloons n' shit out into the crowd. Tons of fun. I think they were playing before The Panthers? I think (previous-Orchid members new incarnation, badass too). But yeah, I wouldn't really consider them metal at all.

I really appreciate everyone's suggestions here....even the ones that aren't metal...not what im really looking for, but luckily I already love Rush, so its all good!

I approve of everything going on in this thread, but: http://forum.watmm.com/topic/62139-metal-appreciation-thread/

I saw Meshuggah live a couple weeks ago and it was pretty much everything I could have asked for. These guys groove out like no other band on earth, and they never miss a beat. I was in a trance for the duration of their set.

Aye, that's the show I was at! That video makes me want to go back right now. The triplets all throughout that song were dead tight. I stayed near the pillar on the left after scoping out the whole room to find the sweet spot for sound. I think the speaker on the right side of the stage near the bass cab was blown, which is where I was standing at the beginning, sounded like a heap of mud. Sounds was great for the other half of the room. If you saw a ginger wandering around in a Merzbow shirt, that was me.
