again, i don't really hate skrillex as much as i hate the people that think that sort of music has any sort of integrity. i try to be open minded, and a lot of the time i employ a "well, each to his/her own" attitude towards personal preferences such as music taste and who knows, maybe it is original in its own way, sorta like a drawing by an autistic kid.

When you say you change your opinion on something just because it gets hyped, you lose any credibility you have.

oh come off it. Someone gets hyped as a "pioneer in beat science" of whatever the fuck dumb people say, "He's so original, this shit has never been done before." You clearly know this to be false. You think, "so these hypemachine echochambers aren't really understanding the full picture," and then you yourself reevaluate this hyped artists music in a larger context. You find it to be perhaps not as interesting and in fact more derivative of previous material that you've just rediscovered and been impressed by again. Hence your opinion can change.

Seems quite possible to me.

Don't put words in my mouth. I truly don't give a flying fuck.

I'm also gonna jump on the hype train... I tend to be extra critical if the artist is receiving a ton of recognition. I look for technique and quality first, then compare it to music that falls in a similar category. Is it original? Has this been done? Has it been done better?

It's hard to be unique these days, and while I don't LOVE Flying Lotus, I do like 1983 and some of his lo-fi/hip hop stuff. He's come up with some interesting style fusions. I haven't been able to really get into a great deal of his music though... and it really comes down to my personal preferences.

Omg... It's about perspectives, you're supposed to appreciate it if it makes you feel right. Some people here could look at 100 types of plants or trees and say they're all the same.

He really isn't that hyped outside of this little niche of music people on these boards listen to.

People say stupid shit and the music sounds the same. And it's good.

Yup, as I said... just my preference. I just wanted to chime in on the hype discussion... It doesn't dictate whether I will like or dislike the music, but I will definitely be a bit more critical on the outset.

I tend to listen to music more than once, and usually in different ways anyway... So as to give it a fair shot.

Always be honest in everything you do. And be fair as if your actions could be translated into a perfect law.

i've got Reset EP, Los Angeles, Cosmogramma & Pattern+Grid World... my favorite albums & EPs... otherwise I know little his music generally... Somebody can recommend me a better album? ;-P

Aphex and Boards of Canada are hugely overhyped and played too much.

The list confirms this.

1983, Shhh!, L.A. EP 1X3, L.A. EP 2X3, L.A. EP 3X3

i own los angeles.

it's the only album i own that i never listened to.

fly-lo is just completely uninteresting for me, and i if he wouldnt have a release on warp, i wouldnt even know of him.

now you may ask: why do you have this album? answer: it was a gift.

u do listen it. It's a good album! Try 2 listen it & take ur time! ;-)

I like FlyLo. He has jazz, IDM and hiphop elements all of which I like and he combines them well. Also as said before the cross-genre thing might be the chief reason why he's popular, but I can't really say because I don't know anybody else in real life that listens to him and never have heard him in radio or TV (contrary to likes of Aphex Twin, BOC and Ae).

Aphex did his hyping so well in the 90s that he's like a permanent fixture in the IDM lists' top spots. BOC has this cult status and army of devoted fans that will keep listening to them even if they don't release anything in the next twenty years. But I'm (happily) surprised that Ae is so high on the list. I mean Ae is probably my favorite, been listening to them for the last 13 years, etc, but they're pretty uncompromising in their approach so it's nice to see that they still can have that many listeners (even though probably a lot of them are just listening to the first three albums..).

He's a far off relative of John Coltrane. I think that's enough.

Enough for what?

I can't remember?

I think the moral of the story or thread is that people are extremely fickle when it comes to music. They'll complain about the lack of good music being released and then shun the good music when it gets the attention it deserves because they feel uncomfortable brushing against the fans who are different from them.

i'm not sure it's about fans though. i think on this forum it's more resentment toward a successful producer who musicians here feel isn't innovative or original enough. i mean, every time there's a flying lotus thread awepittance pops up and says something derogatory. i think it's a more personal vendetta people have toward musicians who are perceived as popular without having to pay the appropriate dues or break new ground musically. look at the skrillex thread. sure, his music does suck, but it doesn't have any effect on this forum or the careers of anyone here. yet it's an enormous thread full of people hating on someone who is pretty clearly an irrelevant tool. his existence changes nothing. autechre will still make music. that italo disco album you're putting out on your net label still won't be listened to by anyone, so don't worry. and shlohmo and flying lotus can exist side by side and be appreciated by the same audience. the world doesn't have to be binary.
