Why is Flying Lotus so popular?

FlyLo might make music in a similar genre as others, but he has his own unique flavor. And that's the bottom line.

Can't say I've heard any Amon Tobin that comes close to Flying Lotus'

you must not have listened to early amon tobin then. he is all over that style. he even sampled a straight tobin sample and didn't even change it much on los angeles.

Yes, I haven't listened to the old stuff. I'll have to get ahold of some.

i guess cosmogramma is a bit different in how it incorporates electronic textures and jazz, but i'm sure it's been done before. but i don't really listen to music because it's original or innovative, i listen to it because i like it. and i really like flying lotus.

Didn't read this sentence before. That's, of course, why I listen to it too, I just think that people are drawn to that unique sound.

in terms of originality - how about the thousands of hip-hop instrumentals that have been available for decades?

.

I prefer him to be releasing music instead of sitting his ass typing on a forum board.

again, i don't really hate skrillex as much as i hate the people that think that sort of music has any sort of integrity. i try to be open minded, and a lot of the time i employ a "well, each to his/her own" attitude towards personal preferences such as music taste and who knows, maybe it is original in its own way, sorta like a drawing by an autistic kid.

It's pretty obvious to me even though I like hip hop instrumentals

you could take a bunch of his tunes and make them into rap backing tracks.

Maybe 1/7 of his discography fits in that category if that.

i swear people who criticize him haven't listened to cosmogramma. it's always "it's just instrumental hip hop" or "so much sidechain compression". cosmogramma is so far away from the other stuff he's done.

Exactly.

Was the album of the year for me in 2010. Such a dense album that really spanned a lot of "genres" if you will, but it all had Flylo stamped all over it. Heres hoping his upcoming album is anywhere near as good..

i wish there was a non- distorted version. I tried to listen to it 3 times now but the distortion scares me away every time

I'm not really dissing him, and I do enjoy quite a lot of his tunes. I'm just saying it's not always the most original. That's ok though. He spans lots of genres and does it well.

Hey there's alot of experimental and instrumental hip hop out there, often produced by other black guys, however they don't get the same recognition. Now ask yourself why is that.

flying lotus is definitely in his own realm. i also had cosmogramma s my aoty in 2010. i started to think its too jazzy when i just want to hear beats tho. sometimes it seems too clean and safe when i want it to get a bit savage. i think the fact that he's lined up against the other WARP artists tends to frame his music from that perspective where you expect a bit more experimentation.

great track

I know that if I were to play ISDN to the people that are so big on Flylo, they'd probably say, "What is this Techno Shit?" (No offense to that album, it's pretty cool).

Really happy to have encountered this guy aruond 2008. He made my interest in music grow.

Los angeles is his best work imo. After that I haven't heard tracks from him that dropped my jaw, unfortunately. In my opinion Cosmogramma is just more of the same. Nowadays I don't listen to his music anymore though, because it often has this recognizable sloppy flow which I can't really seem to enjoy anymore.

Also live he wasn't that impressive, but that was also due to the acoustics.

This being said, I still think Los Angeles (and some tracks on 1983) make him a good producer.

What does it mean when people say a song is too over-compressed?

music sells better when its loud. You can make everything louder with compression but then it has no dynamics and the sounds quality gets pretty messed up sometimes:

When I see comments in Flying Lotus' shoutbox saying, nothing has really touched Cosmogramma, I tend to believe that these Cosmogrammians have heard no other form of electronic music from the decade of 1990-2000, or much of anything else. I don't have a problem with people liking him, my problem arises from people who praise him for certain aspects like originality when their claims are more fan driven rather than objective.

It's worse when I go to Aphex's page and you have people saying, "I don't see what makes this guy so special, am I missing something?"

completely. He's in no way bad, I'd just much rather spend time discovering other artists who are/were doing similar things with better technical expertise and or at a higher conceptual level. He's simply known because he's on warp, is american, and to a lesser extent african american.
