their facebook page may as well not exist. the only official post from it I've seen is "RIP Peter" when Sleazy of Coil died.

incorrect:

And they recently added all their albums to the Facebook Timeline.

to be fair, that's hardly an 'online presence' and more of a marketing newsfeed without any hint of personality whatsoever.

The majority of those Facebook posts you linked to are merely just links that have been posted, only two of them actually have any non-link content posted, that being "The new URL is.." and "Boards of Canada T-shirts back in stock at Bleep."

No elaboration.

Well, compared to Aphex Twin's Facebook page, they're veritable Chatty Cathys...

Who said "online presence" has to be correlated with personality? Online presence = online presence, wether it be personal interaction with fans or just plain marketing related links.

Also the official boardsofcanda.com site mentions the youtube url as being the official, just in case anyone still doubs that; which is apparently the case after reading this thread.

I'm pretty sure that if you asked anyone what an 'online presence' from a band or artist would construe, they certainly wouldn't define it as "an occasional posting of a link, without any supporting text whatsoever".

No, they'd say they have an official website or something, and not worry or care about the frequency of updates.

An online presence where you are not present.

Good lord, do we need to spell it out? The website itself is what we're referring to as an "online presence" as in, Boards of Canada has an official site that represents them online - any other sites are merely fan sites and unofficial. It has NOTHING to do with frequency of updates, or if the band communicates directly through the site or not.

Can you possibly deny that there is an intentional effort, on behalf of either MDG, Warp, or the brothers themselves to give as little information as possible when making online statements, and to maintain a character that is defined by an aurora of mystery?

Because that counts as fucking with your fans, especially when they're desperate for news/material (and very obviously so).

What was once all mystery and cloak and dagger has dissolved into something more like an attitude problem.

Trust me, they have little time and much better things to devote themselves to than worry about promoting themselves online and keeping fans up to date with the latest happenings. It's not that they don't care, it's just their focus is on the music and their lives, not the public image of the band and it's relationship with the fans.

Unfortunately for fans, Boards are probably one of the most internet-phobic groups out there, so expecting them to behave like most bands today is an exercise in frustration. The last thing Boards would do is intentionally tease fans.

It's funny though - nobody's gnashing their teeth and wailing about Aphex's similar internet hermitude - he doesn't really have an official site, barring the DrukQs mini site...
