ohhh yeah. using humanity to boost a bonfire is totally a good idea, cos the fire will stay turbo lit even if you die

you *can* farm humanity in the sewers. the rats drop em. you can also get humanity engaging in online (laying down the white soap stone and helping online people kill a boss) but not sure how reliable that method is atm.

lol, the rats drop humanity. Last question, does the humanity sitting in your inventory determine how boosted the 'item discovery rate' is? Or do you have to use it in some way?

nah you need to use it and be vulnerable to losing it.

depends on knowing what humanity helps with and when you need that kind of help.

you need to be in human form to see summon signs for NPCs/other players to be able to assist you, especially next to boss fog doors. having a partner in a boss fight can really help in terms of distraction and make taking them down much easier, e.g. Pornstein and Smough. there are also certain scripted NPC invasions into your world (there is one in Blighttown, when you near the waterwheel in the pit) which require you to be in human form.

also, having your held humanity counter anywhere from 1 up to 10 boosts item discovery and means more chances of enemies dropping loot, which when combined with the gold covetous serpent ring really helps farming. there are a couple of places closer to the end of the game where you can farm humanity itself, the easiest one being the crypt area right before the Gravelord Nito fight (those little skelechildren drop it and they spawn infinitely).

finally being in hollow form limits your health but I found the effect of this negligible in DS1, whereas in DS2/3 the more hollow you got the worse your health got and you had to reverse following at some point.

So it really is a huge tradeoff/gambling kind of thing.  It must be frustrating to die when you have around 10 humanity. But that's probably the point.

lol, Rubin next time you post plastic cartridges make sure you include a trigger warning first! You're playing with fire here.

they're not just plastic cartridges though. Nintendo 64 had plastic cartridges purely as a means of distribution. it's literally 2019 and 99% of people today just download games instead of buying physical versions. games like Zelda and Mario Odyssey are still produced and distributed in physical formats, mostly because there are still familys and people out there relying on them over downloading games, maybe cos it's dad and mums buying them for their kids*. Limited Run games on the other hands, are generally indie games that are too niche for companies to bother distributing physically. there's a reason Jak and Daxter 3 re-release on the PS4 is not produced in mass quantity and distributed to shops... because no one would buy it and it would just end up in landfills... Limited Run produce a small number of them. sell it for absurd price tags... then people buy it and put it on their shelves for display and probably never even bother playing it. then the limited quantity sells out, and most of the people who bought it up immediately throw it on ebay for 4x the price tag and continue the cycle of exploiting nerds who need pieces of plastic sitting on their shelves for display. i'll never forget this kotaku article of this one dude who thought it was a good idea to print out fake sleeves and display EMPTY PLASTIC BOXES of download only titles that were on the Nintendo eShop https://www.kotaku.com.au/2017/06/fake-boxes-for-downloadable-nintendo-switch-games/

* lots of ranting exaggerated points in this post. a lot of people also prefer buying physical games because they can then sell it second hand and make some money back after they have played it, or because buying games physical can be cheaper than the asking price on digital storefronts. i don't feel this has much relation to Limited Run games, though.

i pretty much never find myself in the position of having that much humanity in my counter, on account of sucking too much at the game and dying all the time.

omg full disclosure. just looked it up and realised Dark Souls 1 humanity / hollow has no difference to your health. using a humanity restores your health, but differences to max health is only in the other games. very easy to get it mixed up. please accept my apologies. 

I figured, I was wondering why I never saw any health penalties.

btw replaying the Lost Bastille in DS2 right now while writing this post, goddamn I love this map. mood af. I love the Pursuer fights. I think it was here I really fell in love with Dark Souls as a series overall. I just got invaded twice (human players, not NPCs) in 5 minutes and vanquished both of them. dunno what it is exactly but I could never win a pvp fight in DS1 whereas I actually have a decent chance in 2 & 3.

enjoyed this video no the FPGA MiSTer. the discussion on it "feeling" accurate compared to emulation (in a way that is hard to quantify in words) is spot on. 

Started getting into Mutant Year Zero just now. Fallout-style story with XCOM-style combat. But the neat thing about it is that you can move around normally in real time when exploring, as opposed to having to point-and-click your way around the world. It's only when you enter combat that it goes turn-based. But you can still rotate the camera to any angle you wish, which is nice.

They nailed the voice acting as well. This one should carry me over for a while, at least for the next week. Brand new DLC just came out too, but I'd to play through the main game first.
