Unspeakably bad music. ruined a lot of moments for me. hard to stomach because y tu mama had great music that made me think cuaron had ok taste. both the "orchestral" score and the electronic swells and shit were pathetic. bullock as fetus baby with umbilical cord thing was forced. not the slightest attempt to build any sense of a character, save the dead daughter which caused a gigantic lol for me due to "her just falling and hit her head." Get it guys!!? G-R-A-V-I-T-Y... woah.. deep! Completely hated the drops of water on the camera lens trope this time around. In children of men is gave the war a documentary feel, but in this coupled with the first person shifts, destroys the idea of what the camera is. yeah, at this point it can do anything. cool i guess.

 

the ISS exploding was 30 seconds of cinematic virtuosity that you don't see every day.

you basically covered all the points that ruined it for me too. it was a shit ton of fun, and it was filmed gorgeously (for the most part) but thats basically it.

it was a cool ride, just not a great film.

 

wtf was up with the soundtrack, it felt like it was caught in between generic cinematic action crap and something way more fitting. they should have explored the use of electronics more. the second they would come in, some strings would wash up and fuck up the whole mood they were seeming to run with.

 

also why the fuck was george clooney in space with them. he wasn't even a character, he just had a name that i can't even remember...

Alfonso Cuaron is one of the great film makers of all time. The score is amazing. This film is a game changer. You will all admit this later on if you don't already love this beautiful work of art. 10/10

Rush: 7/10 very good, made me want to drive cars a lot

Blue Jasmine: 8/10 very good, very bleak, an onslaught of gallows humour

Filth - confusing at times and could have been a little sharper with the directing but McAvoy is excellent and Walsh's dark twisted humour had me laughing out loud several times. Would be interesting to watch again knowing the outcome. Not as good as Trainspotting but a decent comedy 7.8/10

I watched the conjuring, had some decently creepy moments. Since it's directed by James Wan it also featured some shitty moments and some terrible acting here and there. It seems that he is at least improving his formula as he keeps going. This is basically an insidious remake, with less silly bullshit, of course it all falls apart towards the end, but If you're into this sort of this sort of thing it isn't half bad. My main question coming out of the film was this: Why do people cast Patrick Wilson in anything? I have a soft spot for haunted house flicks and this is one of them/10

prisoners - pretty good . nice cinematogography. maybe a bit silly + overly slow at times. didnt really understand why who did what to huge ackman's kids did it but it was still mostly entertaining. overall some seven out of ten type shit 7 / 10

yeah yeah yeah, Knowing has its moments and Nic Cage should stop taking roles that anyone could play and make the film better instead of worse. Most anyone in his role would have worked better. I do not think it is a classic you wiener. Stalker is a classic. The Shining. Letter from an Unknown Woman. Kwaidan. Night of the Hunter. Gravity, imo, is as well. Knowing is good fun sci-fi horror but not a classic film.

i saw flight last night. catching up on some films i missed in theatre. and it was really good! there wasn't a moment where I cringed or lost interest, it all felt very real. solid film making. also the ginger bird cooooooooooooor

What does it take for you to lose yourself in a film?

in all seriousness, i've made plenty of posts about films i enjoyed. they're just kind of boring reading. i did say i enjoyed gravity. read my posts. it was ok. it worked as entertainment. i wasn't fully immersed because various aspects of it (music, clooney, virtuoso camera moves) took me out. but overall, it was a decent popcorn flick. it was not, however, one of the greatest films ever made, a science fiction film, a worthy successor to 2001, or any number of other hyperbole laden statements i've seen about it.

I do try to read your posts, up until the rage begins to swell inside me, then I miss all of the positive notions hidden within.

I don't agree with any comparison to A Space Odyssey. The only thing they have in common is the setting, and that changes in 2001.

Listening to the Gravity score now and it just isn't very melodic. It has a John Williams meets Carpenter meets Richard Devine feel. Very repetitive. Nothing glamorous. Lots of wobbly synth pads. I think it fits what the film is, a minimal survival story.

ghost in the shell, quite good

Gravity this movie felt more personal to me than other movies since i have spent a fair amount of time over the years reading and thinking about all the different space accidents and trying to put myself in their last-minute-shoes. space disaster is the most exciting kind of disaster and I could lay in bed all night just imagining all the different scenarios or ways to commit suicide inside the suit while floating helplessly towards the stars. there isn't anything more beautiful and frightening at the same time i don't think. god damn sandra bullock is looking good. when she writhed out of that space suit i had to loosen my belt a notch. 9.9/10
