I was never on their bandwagon as many here, but as time has gone by i've come to respect them, though i still don't listen to their music. You see in the 90's i used to know someone on the punk scene kind of like ninja, he was in heaps of different bands, trying to make them work. He also had a gruff but determined demeanour sometimes nice, sometimes on the edge of cuntly was hard to tell, heh. nwae, i knew kids like that so they feel kind of feel like my peoples, yanoe.

also i liked the first part of elysium, then it really bombed for me, chappie had much better flow, cohesion.

i wasn't expecting much from it, but arrived at the same place, hehe. It's just an average not crap movie.

I thought Ex Machina was okay entertainment and atmosphere wise. As far as the AI stuff goes it was okay too, but I have doubts about the whole consciousness in a machine thing to begin with so that kind of stops me from embracing that aspect fully. The story was a bit predictable yeah, but it was one of the better alternatives for the setup, (the mid and ending I mean).

Other ones I've seen recently:

Hot Tub Time Machine 2: Aha classic time travel thing. I really liked it, mostly because of the future aspect.

Parallels (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3479316/): I really liked this, not that I would call it a masterpiece, it just worked for my interests. I think it was supposed to be a tv Pilot. It feels very 'classic style'

Area 51: paranormal activity directors new movie. Was pretty much what one would expect. Not the best found footage film but eh

charles varrick - aftermath of heist flick starring walter mathau with score by lalo schifrin (who i didn't realise was quite so prolific at scoring film until i just checked his wiki page, oh my wot the holy mallally). Not a bad slice of the time.

age of adaline - the most perfectly attuned movie for fat, female, livejournal using demographic.

Ex Machina. style: great. story: passable - I want to say mediocre but I'm ultimately more sympathetic to it than critical of it.

overall it's definitely better viewing than your average movie, but if I were to be fully honest, I'd have to agree with others in saying that it was super predictable (basically a rehash of various 'female' AI tropes) and that really, to enjoy this movie, you have to go into it not expecting anything new or groundbreaking, but rather a modern retelling.

I had a problem right off the bat with the science behind the story. a common problem in the real world, outside of fiction, is when we, in our overreaching imaginations, forget how difficult it is to physically put all the actual nuts and bolts (or circuits and wiring) together. a classic example of this is how we'd've expected to have at least colonised our moon by now, 50 years after the first moon landing, but - *surprise* - this shit turns turns out to be much easier said than done. people underestimate the size of the advances we need to make in the physical realm before we can catch up to our imaginations, and AI fiction is not spared from this. many movies that feature fully functioning humanoid robots focus too much on their minds i.e. the software, and not what it would take to get them actually walking and talking and picking things up (this is why Terminator and Robocop were classics, because they did address these things).

assembling the body would be at least as complicated as creating a working, learning AI (which has been done) that could come close to being human. creating a body that would function as smoothly and fluidly as you'd think when you see the actress move and talk in this film is still way out of our reach. let alone the face, which is such an incredibly nuanced and dense information map! and mapping the physical elements to the 'emotions' and the 'thoughts'... it'd all be a lot fucking harder than the ease with which its shown in movies. we're just supposed to buy that this dude created a replica of a human being by himself in his hideaway lab up out in the boonies? naw. this always trips up AI sci-fi for me. I'd love to see more sci-fi that addressed the practicality of all that, it would connect with me a lot better.

in the end I guess it's just really difficult to address it in movies, purely because of the nature of this medium. books are probably more suited. overall I give this movie a pass. because there is a serious lack of at least passable sci-fi films out there, let alone groundbreaking ones.

if lifelike human-replica hardware is presumably available off the shelf in the era the film is set in, then it's inexplicable that creating the AI to go with it would be received so incredulously, with people asking "do you know what a Turing test is?" no shit, the Turing test was established in the 40s, we've come a long way since then.

I'm just saying the way one side is addressed and not the other is incongruous to anyone who is familiar with the subject matter beyond a passing interest. hardware/software ought to go together, be addressed together, simultaneously, equally, and in a more nuanced way.

The Turing Test dialog was clearly intended for the audience, most of whom wouldn't have a clue what it was. It would be nice to see more detailed and accurate science fiction around, but I think it would be difficult to fit it into the narrative confines of a film, TV series would be better.

I love atmospheric horror films, this one was very effective.

Ex Machina was basically a good episode of Black Mirror, no?

I was going to watch some porn and jack it but then I watched Society instead and now I never want to jack it again.

society is like an 8o,s tv movie with rick baker doing the fx,weird,clunky,but cool too,haven,t seen it for a good while tho,but i did see...

exorcist 1-still freaks me out,putting aside the famous bedroom scenes,right from the very start the sound and atmosphere seems so real and dripping with sinster vibes,no other film has it imo-10/10

exorcist 3-not a patch on the 1st one,bit tv movie-ish,but still has a sinister vibe,also george.c.scott and brad dourif are great in this7/10

anyone recommend "it follows"? heard good things about it,modern horror does nothin for me tho
