i forgot to mention in my shining post how good the soundtrack is for that film. without the music the film would be barely scary or have any tension

Yeah love the shining music. I think Stanley played it over speakers for a lot of the filming. Probably would drive the actors/crew insane in of itself!

The trick with Dogville is to make it to the end. You're beaten down with the suffering and boredom but I believe the payoff is perfect/sublime. FU, LUMPY.

surprised how so many people here feel so negatively towards casino. i actually really like it (even though i read the book before i watched the movie). it's not a great movie, but you guys are making it sound like a spike lee joint

Zero Dark Thirty - 6/10 - Kinda don't see what the big deal was. It reminded me of a tv movie. Which if I was gonna watch something similarly episodic I'd rather watch Carlos again.

Safe - 7/10 - This feels like a throwback to the kind of crazy, ridiculous action movies that I watched as a kid and that Jason Stathum does best. Silly and over the top in an entertaining way.

Ohhh, Carlos. Is that good? I have it in my Netflix queue.

Saw Skyfall last night. Was pleasantly surprised, as I'm something of a Sam Mendes hater. Although, the strengths of the film had more to do with the themes and writing, than with the direction - which was a bit lackluster, as I expect from Mendes (the action scenes in particular had some weird no-nos, like flopping camera angles 180 degrees). Anyway I liked the idea of making it more character-focused on his relationship with M, that was a good call. Liked Javier Bardem's acting too. Did not mind that the ending was not a "huge action setpiece"...it did drag a bit but I liked the psychological elements of the film. In a way it felt more like a Batman movie than a 007 movie (both the parents being dead, the manor, the theme of surrogate parents...archetypes...).

As far as the bad goes, I hate the new Moneypenny, the black chick. It's like she thinks being sultry is constantly smirking and raising her eyebrow and exchanging epically groan-inducing one-liners with Bond (well I guess that last part is the writer's fault). The other "Asian-y" chick was laughable as well. Really terrible bond flick from the "hot chick" pov. Which leads me to...

Is Sam Mendes gay (maybe that's why he and Winslet divorced?), or was he trying to subvert the entire Bond mythos? What the hell was up with the leg rubbing between Bardem and 007, and the line "what makes you think this is my first time?" I have nothing against gay themes but I don't understand turning an icon of machismo into (apparently) a closeted homosexual, or at least bi-curious dude? Not to mention that Daniel Craig seemed to be wearing way too much makeup throughout the movie, he looked very metrosexual. Not sure if that were doing it with intent, or if they just didn't know what they were doing but thought tossing in a little "wtf gay bbq" would add some spice to the film. In the end I don't care, but if I was a Bond fan I'd probably be screaming. Though I suppose it is in keeping with Daniel's Craig's cold and asexual vibe.

Overall 8/10, was "pleasant."

mendes did make american beauty, which has one of the gayest straight characters (kevin spacy's character) i've ever seen. who the fuck fantasizes about a tastefully semi nude high school age girl on a bed of roses?

I haven't seen that since it came out. Though I remember it having several good zingers (and an awesome pair of tits? The gothy neighbor, right?) I think it got filed away in my mental dictionary under p for pretentious (probably about the time the young dude rhapsodizes about the blowing plastic bag).

I will give credit to Mendes for making Daniel Craig a star, I vividly remember Craig's acting in Road to Perdition, think it was the best acting I've seen from him.

I tried watching Revolutionary Road but didn't make it past 5 minutes. The dialogue between Winslet and "eternal pre-pubescent" Leo DiCaprio was mind bogglingly awful.

In general I think of Mendes as one of those guys who can make pretty pictures, but has trouble stringing them together into a coherent film that isn't boring (not unlike, say, Tarsem Singh). Plus the pretentious thing.

I don't think I've seen her in anything since. Maybe she should have followed in her parent's footsteps instead.
