was in the mood recently to watch some late '80s / early '90s action movies I'd never seen before, with scooby-doo style plots & villains. these all fit the bill perfectly. the early '90s were great for these types of movies.

Nymphomaniac vols 1+2 - Enjoyable, curious, in a way Seligman is the most interesting character, because he represents the most disappointingly unable to connect to Jo in the end, despite being the most capable, in being as much of a sexual outsider as her. I liked that Jo actually genuinely turned out to do some genuinely bad things, especially in her grooming of P, as it challenges Seligman's wilfully ignorant defence of Jo, though in other ways, his defence of her makes a fair point in that a man in her shoes would be viewed as less contemptible. The BDSM scenes are my favourite part and make me feel like a rank amateur in that area holy shit.. taking a much lighter blow to the face gave me an headache which was in no way erotic, and she does it with a glove with coins in the fingers... those scenes were the most convincing part to me, and I appreciated the seriousness of the dom and the unceremoniousness of his instruments. Would be curious about other aspects of Jo's story which weren't included by her, such as her relationship with her mum. I'm not sure Charlotte Gainsbourg was the best actor for the film, though she does have a certain von Trier appropriate style somehow.. maybe Olivia Colman could have done this story justice? There are a lot of dicks in the film, shown in unflattering light, which makes them seem slightly ridiculous and unsexual, kinda like they do in 99% of dick pics. One of Shia LeBeouf's weakest performances, among many weak performances. Nice to see Christian Slater in something, I feel like his character lacked the capacity to really empathise and be genuinely involved in (the more intelligent and introspective) Jo's inner life - would have liked to see more of this dynamic explored because it's not something you often see in films. Jo's sex life seemed pretty joyless and not much fun, which seemed weird, I feel like that's an aspect of sex which is hard to avoid, but I guess it makes sense in the context of the Jo's compulsion.

The Craft - one of my favourite films, was curious to notice that while I used to admire Nancy, I way more admire Sarah now. I still feel bad for Nancy in the end, despite her murders - although she was a spiteful person, she couldn't help being that.

Beau Is Afraid. It was pretty impressive, weird fun sad, very creative like a cross between Terry Gilliam and Wes Anderson with a smattering of Jodorowsky. 

had a nostalgia moment and watched Wolf (1994) with nicholson and pfeiffer hehe lmao
my father loved that movie and took it quite seriously i can remember

just watched this 

I don’t want to spoil anything but this could have been way better. Some funny stuff but the werewolf angle doesn’t nearly pay off. Still, it was fun. 

Birthday gift, haven’t seen this since high school 

according to the box cover: the sheriff couldn't.... the FBI couldn't.... but the little dragons can!

do what exactly you might be asking yourself? rescue a little girl who was looking for her dog at the beginning of the film. the "little dragons" are two brothers 'trained in martial arts who, with mastery of speed, strength and the secrets of the east, have become the most modern and subtle machine for hitting their enemies.' 

imagine if vivek ramaswamy was a filmmaker and made a karate kid knock off BEFORE the original karate kid film. that's this film complete with awkward humor, unnecessary "bad language" and slightly over-the-top action sequences. 

well that was weird, and fun

So I watched Hellraiser 1 and really enjoyed it. Having a hard time finding 2 streaming for free. Thought it was on Tubi but turns out that’s the Spanish version. Going to go downtown and see if I can find it at the used dvd place. 
This has got me interested in horror movies.

don't go in looking too hard/expecting too much for Hellraiser 2. it's decent, has some good moments but also starts to stray from all the good stuff in the 1st one. worth a watch, but don't expect it to match the 1st.

also, for the love of god, stop after 2. trust me. unless you WANT to watch shitty movies, stop after 2. not seen the recent remake stuff tho so can't comment on that, but the Hellraiser 3-7 or whatever they did....

If YEK hasn't seen Hellraiser part 2, I feel it adds a lot to the mythology, but the story is a little too much sometimes, I agree.

Reddit horror said 3 was a fun romp. I dunno. If I can find them for like 5 bucks a pop. That’s the thing with horror movies, the quality can be all over the place. 

this didn't work for me. firstly, the entire "beginning" is like the intro scene for a video game with CGI indy looking crazy, then it becomes a bunch of set pieces being moved around to satisfy the "plot" which felt like an attempt at making a "best of..." action/montage except now indy is back to 80 year old harrison ford and he can barely run

Beau is Afraid - I literally just finished watching, so I need a few more weeks and maybe a rewatch to better absorb it

If Lynch is dreams, this is delirium, but that's saying too little about it.. a world without support or comfort that reminded me of The Leftovers - a series about the people left behind after the rapture, and something else of Maps to the Stars - manipulating away feelings, abuse and crime without compunction, something else of Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire - running in fear, with intermittent strange comfort, which is subsequently reflected back in mockery...

I don't know, I feel like there's so much more to say about this one... I can't even say I love it, at one point I thought "so do we watch films to feel stressed and disturbed now?" - at one point I felt my mental health was literally under attack

Amazing beautiful details everywhere all the way though, bits of text, motifs, strangely inappropriate music

I think that's all my thoughts for now.. I think there may be threads of meaning too, most obviously to do with an overbearing emotionally abusive mother, and some Freudian stuff, but would take a while to unpick

enjoyed this despite thinking i would not. it's not the greatest film EVER (something my wife believes is now factual) but it does have an engaging plot. i just wish the whole thing was tighter (wink) and didn't feel like it was filmed in a just a few weeks with the rest "being fixt in post".

My favorite Von Trier film. I think her name is spelled 'Joe' to emphasize the point you make about male/female double standards in relation to sex. There's a scene, not sure if it's in the theatrical or director's cut, where she and her friend are tallying all the guys they fuck on the train and she spells her name on a chalkboard.

My favorite thing about the movie was the editing. To tell an erotic story visually is probably easy enough since it centers on naked bodies, but the movie did so with such subtlety and the editing really brought that out and it made possible all those nice analogies between Seligman's interests and Joe's experiences that keep the story going, like the Cantus Firmus section where all her different lovers are likened to the separate voices in Bach's polyphony.
