So when is the storm supposed to be over?

I'm asking because I'll ban Kanakori for as long as Sandy is tearing everything apart so we don't have to listen to his shit.

EDIT I'm not kidding btw.

With the bridges closing off New York, one wonders if this is the League of Shadows trying a new strategy?

Joking aside, if there's any watmmers in the line of the storm, stay safe.

Guest Franklin

I'm on the south shore of Lake Ontario in the Niagara region which is apparently going to be the worse-hit place in canada!! I'm right below the escarpment that you're likely talking about Wisp lol!

I spent a few hours today getting the outside of the house ready and checking to make sure we've got the proper flood insurance. The winds are suppose to get up to over 100km/h here with SIGNIFICANT amounts of rain... apparently up to 150 milimeters as well as waves on lake ontario of up to 7 meters!!

Amazing considering we're like 8 hours from New York City I think.

Winds are crazy here right now. Good luck to all:)

Indian Point has two huge pools of spent nuclear fuel rods stored at its working reactors, each housing tons of uranium and plutonium no longer strong enough to turn steam into electricity, but still strong enough to be lethal.

"The issue is to keep water in the pool," said Steve Kraft, senior director of special projects for the Nuclear Energy Institute, an industry policy organization. "It's all solved by having water in the pool."

Nuclear fuel rods in the pools can start to heat up and even spew radiation — as in Fukushima — when the water that usually surrounds them leaks out or boils away as steam.

While Indian Point has never had a serious incident that threatened the water coolant in its spent fuel tanks, it did experience a tiny, potentially dangerous leak. In 2005, Entergy Nuclear workers discovered the leak in Indian Point 2's spent fuel pool while digging on the property.

Radioactive water was seeping through a crack in the wall of the pool building, soaking into the ground — and then finding its way into the nearby Hudson River.

Entergy spent millions monitoring the leak, and the tritium and strontium 90 tainted water that escaped eventually dried up. The radioactive water likely had been around since about 1993, before Entergy purchased the plant.

The loss of water at that time wasn't significant enough that plant workers couldn't keep the highly radioactive spent fuel rods safely covered. They routinely have to put more water in to compensate for evaporation, just as homeowners with a backyard swimming pool do.

Problem with pools

The reactors that the Japanese are now battling to bring under control have lost enough water in their spent fuel pools to cause extremely dangerous overheating.

But David Lochbaum, a nuclear engineer with the Union of Concerned Scientists, said a key issue with the spent pools in Japan doesn't pose as much of a problem at Indian Point.

"Spent fuel pool safety is an issue there (Indian Point), but it's not as bad as plants with elevated spent fuel pools," as in Japan, said Lochbaum, a former NRC safety trainer who worked for 17 years at U.S. nuclear plants.

Indian Point's spent fuel pools are built at a lower point in the structure than the Japanese design, and they are better protected by 4-foot-thick concrete walls.

The elevated pools seem like a good idea because it allows for easy fuel transfer, but they're not as well protected and if there is a problem, water has to be pumped up instead of letting gravity do the work as would be the case at Indian Point.

"The problems in Japan were made worse by the hydrogen (gas) explosions," Lochbaum said. "It's unlikely that hydrogen would have collected in separate building at Indian Point."

He said what might not survive at the Buchanan site in the event of catastrophe is the cooling system piping, which is not as robust as the reactor piping.

"But you have hours, days even, to restore cooling before heat boils off the water and you have 30 feet of water to evaporate before you have problems. You can use fire hoses or a bucket brigade. You wouldn't need Hudson River water to cool that pool."

If the water gets down to the rod level, however, it can be lethal in minutes, he said.

Without the cooling system functioning properly, the evaporation rate would go from an average 100 gallons a day to 100 gallons a minute.

He said a standard fire hose could replace 100 gallons a minute.

There were also problems in Japan with rubber seals for the fuel transfer canal openings; they're like bicycle tubes that are inflated to make a tight seal.

Without power, they lost their seal and water escaped from below as well.

Indian Point has similar seals, Lochbaum said, but would be able to use one of its three independent sets of diesel generators and a set of backup batteries to keep critical areas operating.

20,000 EXCESS CANCER CASES IN 15 YEARS NEAR INDIAN POINT NEW REPORT SUGGESTS RADIATION EXPOSURE MAY BE ONE CAUSE Contact Joseph Mangano 609-399-4343 odiejoe@aol.com

November 18, 2010 – Cancer incidence rates in the four counties closest to the Indian Point nuclear plant have risen much more rapidly than U.S. rates since the early 1990s, according to a report released today. If trends in local rates had equaled U.S. trends, over 20,000 fewer local residents would have been diagnosed with the disease.

“Cancer incidence rates in counties closest to Indian Point was 11% below the U.S. two decades ago, but now is 7% above the U.S.” says Joseph Mangano MPH MBA. “There are reasons for this gap, and one that should be considered is continuing radioactive emissions from Indian Point.” Mangano is Executive Director of the New York-based Radiation and Public Health Project research group (RPHP), and author of the study.

Counties included in the study were Orange, Putnam, Rockland, and Westchester, where about 9,000 residents are diagnosed with cancer each year. Patterns in each county were similar, i.e. a rate below the U.S. in the early 1990s that is now above the nation.

RPHP used data from the New York State Cancer Registry (for county cancer rates) and from the National Cancer Institute (for national cancer rates). It compared cancer rates for the 5-year period 1988-92 with later 5 year periods (1993-97, 1998-02, and 2003-07).

Unexpected rises occurred for 19 of 20 major types of cancer. The greatest increase was found in the local rate of thyroid cancer, which has moved from 13% below the U.S. to 51% above. There are no known causes of thyroid cancer other than exposure to radioactive iodine, only produced in atomic bomb tests and nuclear reactor operations.

RPHP researchers have published 27 medical journal articles and 7 books on health risks of radiation exposure. It conducted the only study of in-body radiation levels near U.S. nuclear plants; Strontium-90 in baby teeth rose sharply near seven U.S. nuclear plants, including Indian Point, since the 1980s.

The 40 year licenses of Indian Point’s two reactors expire in several years, and Entergy Nuclear, has asked federal regulators to extend these licenses for an additional 20 years.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is planning to update a 1990 study of cancer near nuclear plants. Mangano states that the Indian Point report can provide helpful suggestions on how the NRC might construct the new study.
