Why do people even read Pitchfork reviews in the first place? I've never seen a single person anywhere, who agreed with one of their reviews. What's the point?

Well yeah I learned after a bit of reading some time ago that it just wasn't worth my time (I waste enough time as it is...). Anyways to hell with pitchfork, let's get back to Bibio.

I gave up on reading reviews years ago. I know what I like - all I need is preview samples to determine if it's a yay or nay. I think it just boils down to whether you are resourceful enough to find things for yourself (which, I daresay, most watmm folk fall into such a category) in order to form your own opinion. If you're not, then you're at the mercy of whatever drivel gets spouted from the phalanx of 'hip' blogsites who are deemed blessed enough to receive promos.

Good album, only heard it twice so far but so far I would say I enjoy Ambivalence Avenue & Mind Bokeh more. I really love the feel of this album though... and the Japan bonus track is essential. Will definitely be spending lots more time with this one!

I didn't preorder a copy but my friend did and he hasn't received his yet. He didn't even know it'd come out already...

looking from the tracking email i got, should be getting mine tomorrow. mine shipped from some place in michigan on monday, to its destination in louisiana. didn't receive any tracking email i presume?

On the topic of reviews, Resident Advisor seemed to like this album, it got 4/5 and a pretty positive review there.

I'm (finally) picking this up tonight.

EDIT - hey this is down to £13.10 for the vinyl on Amazon now, with the option of free shipping. That's a great price.

I read as many reviews of art after I've experienced it first just because I like engaging in a dialogue with others about things like this. I don't have many friends who are also into the stuff I'm into, so I see online fora and review sites to have an imaginary exchange of thoughts on a given subject. I'm not likely to change my mind radically about a work just because I read a review of it: e.g., I'm not likely to think that a bibio album isn't great because some schmuck on there gives it a 6.333 or whatever. The fact remains, as much as I dislike pitchfork, they are one of only a handful of places where people discuss their thoughts on the stuff I like beyond a one liner such as "It's cool" or "That's weird", which is the usual reaction I get from people when I play this stuff for them in person (highly annoying to me). It just turns out that I am reminded only after I read a typical pitchfork article how much I hate their approach to their reviews. I usually seek a worthwhile, new perspective on the material, but what I usually find on pitchfork is some undergrad self-absorbed and self-entitled rant about how a given work is not surprising enough or some other lame quote-unquote "insight". So I look in vain for some place to continue my imaginary dialogue with fake peoples on the interwebz. Hence why I frequent this place dozens of times a day.

Change of subject: why isn't there a bibio subforum? I know this has been mentioned many times, but I really think we should consider it. Premises:

1. Bibio's output is consistent and plentiful.

2. If that's true, then there's plenty to talk about.

3. He's influential to some artists who have subfora on this website.

4. He's collaborated with and performed with artists who have subfora on this website.

5. He's young and has a promising future of lots of interesting work ahead of him.

6. He's a smart guy who occasionally writes about wide-ranging subjects like photography and religion on youtube comments.

7. There is a significant number of us who like his work a lot.

8. Some people here have reported becoming bibio converts, and if that's true, then our numbers are growing.

Therefore,

9. Bibio should have his own subforum on here.

Now, someone might object that even though there are bibio fans on here, there are some people here who do not like his work. However, the problem with that line of thinking is that there are easy counterexamples: not everyone who frequents this website likes Squarepusher, for example. So it's not the case that an artist shouldn't have a subforum just because some WATMM members aren't fans.

Gotcha - Might've deleted that email on accident. But since several people had not received theirs yet, I'll just be patient.

Again, this is my vote of support for a bibio subforum.

A trend I have noticed starting a bit with Mind Bokeh and now definitely more in Silver is that many of the songs elicit very specific emotions (at least more so for me than his previous work). I think one of Silver's greatest accomplishments so far is how strongly it creates an emotional atmosphere (along with a beautiful visual or nostalgic one as has become Bibio's standard).

I guess my mood and mind are pulled in a lot further this time. Especially on tracks like Orion, The First Daffodils, and You Won't Remember.

On a side conversation -- Where is everyone ranking this overall in the bibio discography after initial listening?

Mine right now from favorite to least:

AA

Silver

Mind Bokeh

VTC

Fi

Hand Cranked

It's tough though, because I love all of these albums a lot. (I think I've expressed before that for whatever reasons Ambivalence Avenue is BY FAR my favorite record of any artist ever.)

almost ditto for me. ambivalence avenue may not be my favorite record out of any artist but it's really up there, maybe top 10 material. plus, love the artwork, have a poster of the cover on my wall, looks delicious.

by the way, raincoat is one of the best songs i've heard in a really long time.

This is ranked number 3 for me in his whole discog, with fi and VTC beating it. Such good memories with those

I'm feeling like subforums are bullshit anyway. All we get are redundant threads and people creating inane threads just because there's a place for them. Maybe that's an exaggeration, but you get the point. Is there really that much to talk about? Is there frequent news that warrants a bunch of new threads? If something does occur, there's nothing wrong with making a thread for it in the General Music Discussion forum, or just starting different threads about specific aspects of such artists...like discussing his style, equipment, influences, etc. At least I don't think it's against the rules. I don't think you're forced to have an "official Bibio subform thread" where everything goes. But even if that's the case, I see nothing wrong with that. There isn't that much to talk about. I mean look at Mouse on Mars, for example. They've been around forever and have released countless albums, and have plenty of fans on WATMM. There's one "official MoM forum thread" for them, and it works just fine. Not much gets posted, but it stays relatively afloat. If a new release is announced, we get a new release thread.

Anyway I'll go back to enjoying this album now. :emotawesomepm9:

I just stay out of this happy discussion, not a user of Google Glass. Fancy french title is the only good song for me, cared more about Mind Bokeh, which for all its lows was atypical.
