So in a way the BoC community are all passive consumers of a stage play who's actors sit amongst us, rather than compadres togeather on a treasure hunt. Kind of breaks the spell when you think of it that way.

That Daniel Johnston video was interesting in its own right, but I just assumed (given his absence afterward and the lack of the citation for the source) that aserinsky made it. I really don't buy it as legit.

Whatever it truly is I'm quite enjoying it. Presents typically come wrapped in a box so you get a moment of excitement and wonder at the mystery and to me that is what this is. I don't think BoC needs much advertising and if they choose to do it in this fashion I can definitely respect that.

Ricky the Dicky DJ on my local Hit's radio station isn't going to be "dropping this new joint" and you probably won't see a giant cutout of the brothers in the Walmart music section. For BoC this is pretty much perfect.

I don't think anyone is hatin on BOC, this whole mystery thing is either for you or not.

i don't get why the statement "it's a carefully orchestrated marketing scheme" is somehow revelatory, or makes the whole process any more cynical. I think it's entirely possible that:

- both Warp and BoC agreed to the plan as a way to build hype and ultimately boost sales

- they probably both also though it would be fun

- it wouldn't surprise me if BoC and their pals actually came up with the puzzle

- so far it has been used for good purposes, such as drawing attention to Record Store Day (visit your local record shoppe and find a clue!)

- I've learned quite a bit from it, for example about the Conet stuff/numbers stations, Atalanta Fugiens, and Daniel Johnston (I happen to believe the latest clue).

What's not to like? This whole cynical "I can see through their motivations" pose is quite silly imo.

it's also worth mentioning that this puzzle seems quite similar in design to the redmoon puzzle of yesteryear, which was clearly a BoC only event that had nothing to do with marketing a new album. So they've been toying with these ideas for a while...

Why hasn't the "Predict new BOC album title & cover art" been ruined yet by merging it with this thread? I really think mods should be consistent with threadruining.
