The guy from Warp I spoke with pretty much confirmed what I suspected that BOC had never been to the places in the RFTD video.

Wait, what did he confirm? This sentence, or ...

... this sentence, or both? They're not the same, you know. And the first does not entail the second. I had the sense that even if BOC had never been there themselves (which I'm not sure follows, either: just because they didn't shoot the films doesn't mean they didn't visit there once 20 years ago), they still had a hand in the creative process of designing the films. For example, it seemed that they probably indicated that they wanted the imagery to be about desert landscapes, abandoned buildings, etc., and Krug and co. added their creative input within those parameters.

Does anyone here call it that?

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3080771/watmm.mp3 now back on topic...I've not bothered reading past this bit of the thread. To be honest, I think it's ridiculous. All that hubbub just so 50 or so people could get to hear the album once, about a week before everyone else (yes a week, because you know that shit is hitting whatcd when the japan release happens)? LOL! I am now not going to listen to the album until the record is in my hands. I will not be listening to digital vinyls, that means no leaks and no official digital release. Fuck me, the amount of hype around this release is astonishingly
I'm with this totally. I haven't bothered with the new uploads.

Think about folks. If you've already heard these plus Reach For The Dead, then you've already played a quarter of the album.

That's depressing. And you all waited how many years?

You both make me LOL. You're slamming the events that have been crafted and approved of BY THE BAND THEMSELVES. Do you not see the irony in your statements?

to be clear, I'm not as pissed as I may sound about the campaign. thing is, the only people interested in these codes and such are the ones who already preordered, so i feel its more trolling than hype generating since we are just waiting for our orders to be filled having already been hyped enough to buy it blind.

To be fair though, BoC must be one of the hardest bands to market for. Warp can't "go big" because they'd be accused of selling out their hardcore fanbase, and the music doesn't have widespread mass appeal anyway; but if they do the cryptic clue thing for the hardcore folks, it just pisses them off and doesn't increase the fanbase...directly. I think what they're hoping for is to add to the BoC mythos bit by bit through these viral things, which should in turn eventually draw in new fans who hear about the buzz. But it's a pretty roundabout way of getting new fans, and yet, their only viable option really.

After this I listened to geogaddi and I didn't like it, I was quite vomitting at some tracks, I realized they were too crazy for my ears, they took too much acid to play music I stupidly thought (cliché of psyché music) But I knew this album was a kind of big forest where I just wasn't able to go inside.

I'm sure they have a lot of input to how they want their music to be presented. They are the client. For all I know the Warp guy could have been blowing smoke, but he seemed genuine in his statements. I generally feel that people read way too much into the visual aspect of the band.

I do think the stuff they are doing is cool, I just think 8 weeks of it is a bit much considering the albums been ready the whole time.

had that initial numbers hunt led to an immediate download, it would have been the coolest release of all time.

instead it was a super slick old school treasure hunt and when you dug up the chest, there was an iou note. and then there was another one where they let a few people look at the treasure but its still IOU, even though you paid me too.

I think they did it very well. It was a small amount of dedicated fans with no media listening to the album on a good sound system in the environment of the album's videos and artwork. The news at 11 didn't show up for an expose on the scene thankfully.

I could see being worked up if it was all hype and no substance. Like if the album was full of guest vocalists and had dub step bass drops. But this is BOC. They've put out an album that stays true to their (not real lucrative) form. This is worth celebrating. They deserve it. And warp deserves it for running a label with this kind of music on it. So if we truly love the music, we should understand their efforts to sell a few more albums where possible. This kind of work is worthy of the rewards that our culture bestows upon far crappier artists for far crappier work.

I'm glad they made it so fan friendly and I hope they sell a million albums. If you can't understand that then there's a good chance you're a fat troll eating a sandwich that your mom made for you.

Well put. Agree 100%.

And I believe this is what you're referring to...

^ yea that's totally me

I'm wondering how geogaddi is so well loved without an insane campaign.

I think either you guys are missing my point or I am not articulating it well.

either way, should be in our players in about a week I'd guess.

of course you mean aside from just putting out good music

well, yeah. And I guess that's the main thing, as I said somewhere else their meager output of late is like waiting for a sickly rabbit to shit one golden pellet. Which adds to the feeling that no matter what Warp do, it feels like "milking it". But they have to milk it in some form or other, or it won't make up for years of "lost" revenue. Not an enviable position for Warp to be in, might be better if BoC went off the label thing entirely and just sold directly through their website.

After this I listened to geogaddi and I didn't like it, I was quite vomitting at some tracks, I realized they were too crazy for my ears, they took too much acid to play music I stupidly thought (cliché of psyché music) But I knew this album was a kind of big forest where I just wasn't able to go inside.

just for shits and giggles...

if they just dropped the record out of nowhere and it was announced as available immediately, you think they will have sold a shit ton less than with this campaign?

Edited by jules

I don't think there's lost revenue assuming BoC have a deal for a fixed number of albums. But warp definitely want to sell as many copies as they can. Given how hard it is to make money in the music industry these days, u don't begrudge them that all.

I don't. but I'd be willing to bet a higher number of sales if it came out of nowhere. less chance of people fucking with leaks and just buying it out if immediacy and shock vs a 8-10 week build with scattered release dates and teasers and weird reviews.

You'd have to ask Kevin Shields that I'm guessing; new MBV and new BoC exist on opposite plains in terms of marketing approach, but they're fan base tends to overlap a fair bit. I'd guess that both approaches round off to around the same amount of profit...

they did surprise drop Geogaddi, more or less. I'm curious how well that did. Of course that was in the days before rampant piracy...

That was post Napster

And there were promos and other "regular" types of pre release hype... There was even a watmm contest for autographed swag

A surprise album drop wouldn't attract new fans and create new sales. That requires buzz. Hence...

I believe in rainbows is radiohead's best selling album since kid a. so maybe rather than requiring buzz, it generates more buzz?
