People who hang out here all the time, don't produce, and treat the forum like a public toilet

Recommended Posts

The reason I signed up for this forum back in December was cause I thought it was going to be music-centric. I have found some cool stuff here, but something has always struck a strange chord with me here, and I guess it's the sense that in spite of how awesome EKT is, the majority of posts and posters here seem to not concern themselves or what they post with music whatsoever.

I guess my question then is, why waste your time then? What's the point of filling up a forum that is supposed to be music-centric with mindless nonsense? The only rationale I can derive, is that people just want to feel loved and part of something.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Ask not what WATMM can do for you, but what you can do for WATMM. Maybe.

To keep it real and analog, I'm gonna start posting to WATMM by writing my posts in fountain pen on hemp paper, putting them in bottles, and throwing them into the ocean.

the music aspect brings together a lot of like-minded people (apparently, there's a sort that tends to like IDM) and it's fun to be able to chat with them about topics other than music.

I agree with you for the most part, although you are adding to the bullshit in a way.

All I do here now is check EKT and sometimes New Releases and YLC. You don't need to look at genban at all. This is just how forums are, no matter what the actual purpose is supposed to be.

But yeah, guys, please post in EKT more. It's sad that we supposedly all share sound exploration as our common interest, and yet there are only a few posts per day there.

No, I agree with both of you. I really would love to post in EKT but at this point I'd have no intelligent conversation to contribute because I don't have the skills or know-how to back any comment up. I've been spending the last few months trying to learn as much as possible about music creation and have been playing around and experimenting with it, but everything that I've done has been some form of garbage and there's not really much I can say or contribute besides "good job" or "I like that." Which I probably should anyway, there's some extremely talented musicians on here who share some incredible work, and I agree that they don't get anywhere near the credit they deserve compared to the amount of time people including myself spend discussing non-music topics.

On the other hand, the entire point of this section is for somewhat like-minded people (at least in terms of music taste) to be able to have discussions with people from across the world that we probably wouldn't have the chance to in day-to-day life. There's a lot of perfectly intelligent people who are here just because they appreciate this type of music and aren't gifted with the skills to produce it. Yeah it gets silly and probably goes a bit too far sometimes, but I don't think it's turned into a "public toilet" by any stretch of the imagination. Joyrex and the mods do a pretty good job of keeping this place fairly civil, and calling it a "public toilet" is probably more of a slam to them than anything. People need to lighten up.

Well said. I don't delve much into the EKT Discussion either, due to my very limited gear collection. But it's nice to have variety.

I'm not gonna accuse Charles of trolling this time because he is visibly frustrated, and he's probably not alone in his sentiments.

What if we created more subforums for unique/idm-ish/innovative artists (esp. ones that have flirted with electronica) that we all seem to commonly like the most outside of the aphex/boc/squarepusher/ae camp??

like..

the black dog

808 state

orbital

bjork

david bowie

shit i dont know...

photek...

stuff like that..

thoughts?

P.S. i personally love gen banter, but i can also understand frustration regarding the rigid pool of artist subforums.. although i would never think of watmm as not an idm/aphex forum.. for me, its all things aphex, and always should be that way.. i just think it couldnt hurt to have other artists who are influencers/influeces in the genre...

kraftwerk

moby

.. we could even do some kind of official vote...

There's no need for more subforums. Music discussion is there if you want to talk about any of the above.

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.
