Flying Lotus tried to get new Aphex tracks for GTA V

"Flying Lotus’s radio station, named FlyLo FM, will feature a number of artists including Clam Casino, Aphex Twin, Thundercat, and Outkast along with his own music both as Flying Lotus and Captain Murphy. Flying Lotus took to Twitter to explain that being featured in Grand Theft Auto is a “geek dream come true” and that most of the songs are “unheard/exclusive.” He also stated that he attempted to get new music from Aphex Twin and Burial along with unreleased material from the legendary J Dilla, but there was “no luck on that.” "

The aphex track that plays in the game when you listen to Fly Lo radio is Windowlicker....

Just thought it was interesting....

Aphex would be stupid to release all the tension he build up so carefully since the tuss in a dj mix by somebody else without delivering a full LP very soon after

Yeah, we have started discussing this in the GTA V thread. My guess would be that either.

A) Aphex didn't have anything he wanted to contribute. Meaning the stuff he has is going to be used for something else.

or

B) He doesn't want to fuck around with Warp

But being a hella nerd like he is I can't really see that he would be opposed to contributing some good tunes for a fun game.

Stupid? I don't know about that. But it would get the game a crap load more press, but the game doesn't need it at all.

Maybe he thinks that his work is more elevated than being released in a video game. He doesn't seem that wanky about his music though.

If he is really going the robo-classical route it would not fit well into a Fly-Lo DJ-mix

or maybe he just didn't think flying lotus deserved any of his unreleased tracks? If i was a producer as good as aphex i'd have a little bit of an ego about doing something flying lotus asked me to do on his endorsement videogame tie-in deal. Aphex did plenty of music in games but he never got paid for his likeness to be used in one....

on another note, it wouldn't surprise me at all if there was an adversarial feel between the 'greats', the truly amazing producers who still reside on warp having to see a new generation of clearly inferior producers getting signed to the label and strutting around acting like bosses

That is also a possibility. Maybe he should have gotten his own radio station. It probably would have kicked ass. Rephlex FM

I heard some story about him sending out cd's of tracks that could be used in video games or something, but I've never heard of what actual music he has contributed to games.

It is really hard to speculate as to how they perceive anything really. Aphex is a hard one to figure.

True! We are very limited in our understanding of their motivation because honestly, we don't know these people personally enough to say anything with absolute authority on why they did this or that.

All we can do is speculate! =)

Yeah, and the way they were constructed - slick and poppy - and presented, i believe that's almost everything he got by now.

Maybe! I'm hopeful that he has a whole album worth of stuff in a similar vein as those though. They are absolutely brilliant.

Yeah I won't say that conclusion isn't a reasonable assumption...but I'm not sold on it either. Personally, I think RDJ would hesitate for at least two reasons unrelated to assuming he though Flylo was inferior or unworthy:

1. The awkward and seemingly um-humble (in RDJ's mind) of providing exclusive music to a superfan like Flylo

2. Disapproval of the game and/or it's soundtrack formula. This is way less IDM or geeky than say, Wipeout Pure

3. The fact that so much other music is going to be on this game - why give them an unreleased track? Hell, let's be honest many of those playing the game won't give a shit about Flying Lotus, let alone Aphex Twin.

I can totally understand why RDJ (and Burial for that matter) would decline an offer. It might not have anything at all to do with arrogance or superiority, which they are arguably entitled to, but the sheer fact that their music is very personal, and debuting it on a gritty, crime-oriented action game as commercialized and hyped as GTAV is simply a godawful idea. That's a huge jump from simply licensing music that's already been shared, remixed, and re-appropriated for years.
