ding an interpolation that's 90+% identical without paying you at all.

Hicks is great but his music ramblings in general are a bit weak. It's like Henry Rollins and his infamous rant on "electronic" and "rave" music without a shred of fucking context or understanding. I do think selling out is still very much a real thing, but examples of that would be blatant corporate cooperation while "touting" indie cred (as I mentioned above)

what is your opinion on corporate entities understanding that 'indie' is cool and trying to plugin and co-opt that culture ie: Red bull Music academy. I know you've said that RBA is kind of a grey area for you, but I personally find it really creepy corporations are so successfully becoming 'buddies' with people that actually comprise of an 'underground' scene.

RBMA is seems to be more of an academic thing - like when a motor vehicle corporation gives a grant out to some scientists who then have free range to work on a project - a self-driving car or a experimental engine or some other not immediately marketable or profitable R&D effort, so much as they throw on a sticker on the car. When I watch the RBMA lectures I see some logos in the back, some cans on the table, and that's about it. There's not even ads sprinkled in the videos.

So that's why they are grey area to me. It's not far from the edge though. The Scion concerts and the Adult Swim albums are bit closer to that...free original content is tied to those endorsements, not just well, interview time or a DJ set.

The videos I posted earlier are what make me quite uncomfortable: those slick quasi-documentaries where people seem to read scripted lines, deliberately drink a fucking beer or liquor drink for the camera. That seems regrettable and questionable to me as a listener. My "selling out" definition is when artists flat-out contradict their own ethos, i.e. become hypocrites. That's why I feel like Green Day actually did sell out a few years ago. They still sell records off a faux punk image. That's shameless and lame.

Some of the corporate entity examples I do find cringeworthy:

- The current Levi's #MakeOurMark campaign: makeourmark.levi.com

- ABSOLUT Vodka's music video tie-ins

Whatever the fuck this is that Fiona Apple did:

http://youtu.be/lUtnas5ScSE

I found this to be a bit questionable too. They said it was because they needed money to tour, but personally I think they regretted it and couldn't flat-out own up to it being a bad decision:

For me, if you want to cash in on having a song used in a commercial, as M83 has done for GM and Victoria Secret, or play a corporate gig as a neutral musician, fine. But making money from a corporation and then entering into a delusional circle-jerk where both parties claim artistic and moral credibility? Yeah that's a compromise of integrity. I'll turn the other way most of time, but that said there's no apologizing for it.

Yeah, old rock'n'roll mythology isn't that far from corporate's. Henry Rollins is also like that, it's funny that both are fucking comedians, like this is a noble field of artistry.

Comedy is one of the greatest forms of art. Definitely equal to film, music, dance, television, poetry, etc. Making people laugh with surprise and insight is a gift.

To complain about possibly selling out based on the Grand Theft Auto series? That's insane. I would love to be asked to have a track of mine put into GTA. One of the best things about GTA are the radio stations! And on top of that, they make bloody brilliant games. They're success should have nothing to do choosing to accept or refuse their offer. If you're against the violent aspect of the game, sure.

I'm going to have to assume, right or wrong, that most of the people turning their lips and pulling the 'sellout' card don't make music or are still in their early 20s. You can have your own personal ideologies as an artist and refuse to let your music be bought or licensed by certain companies if you'd like (oil, banks, Nike, etc.), but the idea that you should stay 'pure' to keep indie cred is just ridiculous since the people in the indie cred business rarely have much money to give. An artist makes art for themselves first and if some people want to buy it, you jump on that opportunity with no qualms in how you're going to be seen by the 'scene'. Street cred fans are not their personal friends and, if they feel betrayed by their decision to make good money off their art, then so be it. The reach in having your track in a video game like GTA is enormous. It's practically winning the lottery.

I agree with basically everything he's saying, at least as it pertains to the current rave scene, as well as what he says about modern rock, it's spot on. What exactly are you guys taking issue with here?

This is an empty slogan made of words with almost no meaning.

I can go as far as to Aristotle in defining comedy genre as lowest genre, but I'm actually not an opponent to the genre (and by equaling it to larger art forms you only create confusion). I'm only talking about entertainment industry in which it operates here. Key word is entertainment, art can't be functional by definition. It's a work made of compromises with a very basic level of understanding in audience. Everything they do when on that stage is heavily depends on formula (often written by others) and relies not on surprise or insight like you put it, but certain artistic presence of a low sort of acting. It doesn't mean that anyone doing this is bad artist or has no talent, it's just more primitive and therefore limited level.

It's him talking about EDM and in particular when he talks about shitty music + rave I can't help but think of godawful late 90s/early 00s prog house and trance DJs and the people who took an array of drugs while listening to them.

He has no concept of the greater context and diversity of electronic music and rave, but if he did this wouldn't be a spoken word comedy bit, it'd be a discussion. So he didn't bother. It comes off as arrogant but I get what he's saying. It reminds me of the ironic fact that wikipedia has over a dozen articles for various Hardcore Techno genres and yet the one for IDM, a far more diverse genre musically, is on one page.

Oh well, it's been sampled in a tongue-in-cheek way so I suppose it's come full circle.

Say this every time someone tries to make you laugh. Then stare back at them with a psycho gleam in your eye and snarl and grab your junk.
