flylo forming a relationship with a billion dollar company might give him a quick financial boost but it trivializes and fatigues the flylo brand considerably

I don't want to rip on this artists or this fans (I like some of them after all) because for me that's a waste of time and effort. It's their decision, but these endorsement quasi-sponsorship ventures rub me the wrong way. I suppose the faux indie/underground bullshit is what tips it over too. It's too forced and involved, more so than say, doing a RBMA lecture or getting paid for a song being used in a car ad - which again I know many here find very debatable in terms of integrity and merit. As someone who saw quite a few Scion sponsered metal and hip-hop shows, I am guilty of supporting this format of money making for musicians.

It will be really interesting to see how this evolves and changes over the next decade. With the implosion of "traditional" the major label signing/indie label split it's probably only going to become a more complicated and controversial trend.

Aphex is too cool to release anything. He's reached the stage where he sticks to teasing people about his billion unfinished albums in interviews, and never let anyone hear any of it, which is totally IDM and edgy.

Probably came down to how much Rockstar was willing to pay mostly. i.e. Probably not much. Licensing a song to a video game isn't really that much money. Commercials pay much much more.

The fact that Flying Lotus even considered asking Aphex for an unreleased track shows that FlyLo does not read WATMM at all.

what i'm most curious about, besides my projected fantasy rivalry RDJ 'get off my lawn' FU to flylo is the pricing tiers when it comes to how much a certain song costs to use vs others. Like I remember GTA3 having a jungle station, surely those tracks cost less than NWA

I know that they can vary greatly. From 500 per track to many tens of thousands.

I agree with Marf (to a certain degree), even if the core of what Hicks says is morally true. We now live in time where you can deny a company rights to your song, and they'll use it anyway, re-recording an interpolation that's 90+% identical without paying you at all.

Hicks is great but his music ramblings in general are a bit weak. It's like Henry Rollins and his infamous rant on "electronic" and "rave" music without a shred of fucking context or understanding. I do think selling out is still very much a real thing, but examples of that would be blatant corporate cooperation while "touting" indie cred (as I mentioned above) or far more offensive, being a "political" or "social commentary" artist who flat-out works and appeases the system. Green Day's bullshit comes to mind. I remember they releases uber-promoted song called "Know Your Enemy" which was "about liberating yourself from a lot of bullshit that you see on TV" and then they FUCKING PREMIERED IT ON MTV. Or M.I.A.'s "have it both ways" strategy of working with the major labels only to then act like she's fighting against them.
