Is it even possible to produce a new Aphex Twin album?

Recommended Posts

I agree with Stephen. I never got into RDJ as much as say, ae and Boards, precisely for the reason that he's so hit-and-miss. And I was there, so to speak, I just missed SAW 1 but bought both SAW 2 and ICBYD when they came out. Both very strong albums (particularly SAW2, which scared me and changed the way I saw music), but he's always seemed to release more filler (or one might call them "failed experiments"), IMO. On the whole I also don't find his music quite as "lasting", either. Shorter shelf-life, less replayability.

I don't deny he's a groundbreaker, electronic visionary, etc etc, I respect his place in the pantheon of greats, he just doesn't resonate with me as much as some others do. I often find his "emotional" pieces border on cutesy, and his "in-your-face" pieces just good for a laugh. Probably just a matter of taste.

After this I listened to geogaddi and I didn't like it, I was quite vomitting at some tracks, I realized they were too crazy for my ears, they took too much acid to play music I stupidly thought (cliché of psyché music) But I knew this album was a kind of big forest where I just wasn't able to go inside.

I was in US tjis summer, and eat in KFC. FUCK That's the worst thing i've ever eaten. The flesh simply doesn't cleave to the bones. Battery ferming. And then, foie gras is banned from NY state, because it's considered as ill-treat. IT'S NOT. KFC is tourist ill-treat. YOU POISONERS! Two hours after being to KFC, i stopped in a amsih little town barf all that KFC shit out. Nice work!

So i hope this woman is not like kfc chicken, otherwise she'll be pulled to pieces.

Yes, somewhere the notion of "historical relevance" seems completely lost. A result of living in the instant gratification age?

Not really. Just because I understand something's importance and historical relevance doesn't mean I MUST appreciate it above everything else. I'd rather have a 2005 vette' than a 1960'. Both beautiful but one is clearly a better performer. Loose analogy, I know....

I'm sure your home computer isn't an apple 2 or something just because it had historical relevance.

It's a really poor analogy, imo.

I wouldn't say an apple 2 is a middle of the road computer, because you can't do much with it nowadays. It wasn't when it was released, even if it's dated now. The same goes for those "middle of the road" tracks of AFX.

IMO, you're confusing a bunch of stuff. This is not about liking those early tracks, but more about considering their value in a bigger picture. In that bigger picture I think it doesn't really make any sense to label those early 90s tracks as middle of the road. Middle of which road? Music you currently like, given todays standards? Music that was released in the early 90s?

They way I interpret your remarks is like saying the apple 2 is a worthless computer and take no regard of its value in history.

That's not my intention. I was only referring to my enjoyment of the tracks when using the words "shitty" and "middle of the road".

I understand their place in music history and respect that. I was only referring to my enjoyment of the tracks.

Back to the computer. Yeah it had its place in history. I'm not going to use one now just because it had its place in history. The same way I'm not going to listen to some "middle of the road" music when there's music out there that I think is better.

I don't understand the disconnect we're having here lol. It sounds like you're saying I MUST enjoy it because some time in history it was groundbreaking.. =/

after listening to it again, I'd have to say SAW 2 is probably my favorite work of Richard's. Has a lot of emotional depth and uniqueness.

Disappointing album indeed. For me, Tomorrow's Harvest is the definition of a polished turd.

How about you guys just forget him and stop talking about him. That way as the egotistical man that he is, he'll be pissed and put out some stuff. Maybe under a different alias or whatever.

*goes back to listening/discovering renaissance era music*

Recommend some renaissance era recordings (nor actually recorded in the renaissance smart arses). Start a thread in music discuss, so as not to mess up this one with actual information on real things that might be interesting.

seeing as how the last time the aphex twin monochre was used was almost 10 years ago, one might think the name as a creative brand was on hiatus.

seeing as how the last time we heard new release from rdj, it was unofficial in the form of "the tuss", i would say due to several logical fallacies that if the unwashed masses hear more, it will be under a different name.

so, by these logics, no, another aphex twin is not possible.

I know they weren't. Still good stuff. Certainly more interesting and fun than most of aphex for sure.

At least people from the renaissance are releasing music.

My take on AFX is he's akin to reading a really good book. It's great stuff with some very interesting and some less interesting passages that make you think and relax.

Looked up aramarth and thought *that sounds like the name of a black metal band or something. The only music clip i found was some popmetal ballad fronted by a chick.

The title is a pretty obvious clue though, almost dubious ;)

You know how you sometimes hear certain tracks differently after not listening to them for a good while? Like, your musical perception evolves, so to speak, or you pay more attention to different things in the music than you used to? That's happened for me and Drukqs about a week ago.

Drukqs had been filed under "the mandatory milestone thing" in my brain for such a long time, I A) took its existence for granted and B) stopped paying proper attention to the tracks when listening to them. I'd only go "Well sweet, this is Drukqs, it's cool" in my head but didn't "question" the structure of the tracks at all at that point.

Only now after a several year break from the album, I feel like I'm discovering the whole other half of the tracks, the one I never fully grasped because I was already thoroughly satisfied with the bits that I "processed", so to speak, and because it's such a detailed, crammed beast. And even though the point where I'd still jump the hype-train for a new Aphex-release is long gone, I come to the conclusion that, compared to pretty much all other electronic artists, this guy is and has always been immensely talented, way ahead of his time and fully aware of what he was doing.

So yeah. A new release should happen. Just for the sake of finding out where he's at today.

13 years later, Drukqs is still far more complex and futuristic than any electronic music released since.

Maybe if other producers could get even near that level then the Aphex twins might feel like putting something new out.
