I think it's strange that this story has gotten this much traction and that people are still talking about it. it's a terrible thing of course and deserves attention, but 9 days on CNN without actually knowing jack shit? and ordinary people are still discussing it with near-zero facts to go on. my co-workers are talking about this right now. this isn't the first time a plane has 'vanished', it's not an exceptional story.

the 777 is a very long range and large airliner, holding up to 550 passengers and being able to fly for up to 21 hours without landing. as we are learning, being able to keep tabs on planes has its limitations, so this thing could be used for a hellish sneak attack in numerous ways.

authorities are saying foul play is involved, and with good evidence. 2 separate communications devices were switched off, and this occurred in the perfect place and time for a plane to disappear without attracting attention (between two air traffic control territories and in the middle of the night). the transponder was switched off 2 minutes after the copilot casually said goodnight to the air traffic control the plane was leaving the jurisdiction of, and at the same time it changed course. the unexplained drastic change of course was programmed into the plane's computer 12 minutes before the copilot said goodnight as though nothing were amiss. also, one of the systems that was disabled (acars) continues to ping after being disabled, and did so for about 7 hours after shit got weird, meaning the plane did not crash and was still running during that time.

the fire explanation has holes, it doesn't account for the course change that was programmed in before the pilot said goodnight to malaysian air control, which coincidentally (?) went into effect within a minute or two of the transponder being switched off. also the course change brought it back into malaysian air space.

i'm not trying to get into a watmm spat over this, but this seems fishy as fuck, and fucked up as shit, imho.

Yeah if the route was reprogrammed before comms went offline, that does present a problem. At this point i'm maybe 50/50 either way. I'm leaning towards the plane not being hijacked and just having difficulties, but I agree there's some fishy stuff going on.

disappearing a commercial flight full of passengers so that the airplane can be re-used at a later date in a surprise attack sounds daft to me. I still think it's crashed, whether due to failure or coercion by someone on board, I dunno.

regardless of what was behind this plane disappearance and what must now inevitably be counted as 200+ passenger deaths, my point is that this still isn't as big as Ukraine. Russia is annexing part of a country in the face of sanctions and suspension from the G8. that is massive and should be talked about on the hour as it unfolds.

this is not to say you can't devote airtime to both stories, but certain news outlets trying to divert focus by talking about the airplane story constantly and ignoring Ukraine is what seems fishy as fuck to me.

the ukraine story is right up there on the sites i check. if you're talking about tv news, it's generally a ratings-driven product.

Yeah it's not surprising the major networks are avoiding the Ukraine situation. As far as American media is concerned, well most Americans either don't understand what's going on and how it affects them, or generally just don't give a shit.
