3 billion is a drop in the pond for apple's reserve funds these days. Probably just wanted to cash out on some money and let business continue on as usual -->> or the more optimistic approach, essentially take beats by dre out of the picture and force on the public something better? people at apple are not blind to quality, i'm sure they all know beats products are pathetic. I think this was "stupid" but I'm working with probably 10% of the picture. this is nothing like googles purchase of motorola for like what 12 billion? i mean that was retarded. 12 billion for a company that isn't turning profit? 3 billion for a wildly successful company (regardless of shit product)?

also who cares if iphones dont have headphone jacks? i don't think i've ever plugged anything other than my standard iphone buds into it for running -- what are people walking around with sennheisers in their phones? not worth it...

Yeah, Sennheisers on your iphone is stupid, but on the one hand, I was thinking more of 1€ earbuds and of standardisation itself; and on the other hand, Sennheisers on your iphone is about as stupid as carring a smartphone around, essentially a 500€ pocket computer you only use for twitter, shitty tetris clones and stuff a pen and a notebook would get done, so the point is moot.

 

Now, the moment iMacs don't have a standard jack, that's when the shit will hit the fan.

I use Sennheisers with my iPhone all the time. I also use my phone for a ton of awesome shit like browsing RSS way better than a computer, doing a bunch of crazy photo editing, and writing Python. An iPhone is just a computer, which is just a tool.

 

Apple just spent an entire week giving a bunch of awesome “power user” new tools and APIs to developers for free. I bet it’s absolutely true that there are going to be Lightning-port-compatible headphones in the future, because the Lightning port technology is awesome. However, I’ll eat my hat if they remove the headphone jack at the same time. There’s no way that is going to happen.

 

Forbes and FACT don’t know what they are talking about and are basically making shit up to try and get page views on this. Most likely the phones aren’t going to change. There’s going to be a headphone jack AND a Lightning port. Which is just like what there is now.

Is this seriously the standard stance for Apple users (especially on a music specific forum)?! I've had Sennheiser ear buds plugged into my (non-apple) phones for years - 99% of the use of my phone is a portable mp3 player. If I was forced to use a specific brand just to able to listen to music on the go then .... well that's never gonna happen, it's why I've never used anything Apple !

hmm not sure I was clear enough. My iphone has loads of music on it - for running and for listening in my car. When I'm running I just use the apple buds the thing came with - sound fine for running, don't see why I need anything fancier or different. My car gets music from the usb port and sounds good from there. My sennheisers are reserved for my soundcard for home listening and the computer when I'm working around town. Guess my point was that from my usage, having no headphone jack on my iphone wouldn't be a huge loss to me, if I got a new one I would probably continue to use the apple buds for running. also the proprietary argument doesn't really hold water - u think sennheiser wouldn't crank out some buds for iphones within the year? seems silly to ignore the gigantic market of iphones. and apple knows that. They're big enough now to curb and change trends. They already did it with flash, but I think they see hardware as the next big thing

^ I'm with ya man, never been able get a pair of earbuds to stay in even if it's just sitting somewhere, never mind walking around or doing stuff. I think we're a fairly substantial minority of the headphone-wearing population but nobody cares since we don't look cool enough (unable to wear earbuds as we are).

 

Just saw a pretty douche-chilling commercial for Bose taking full aim the beats demographic - think a strobelighted abercrombie store, a multiculti of of brodys and ke$has dancing buzzed off vodka-soaked tampons, and headphones - this for 15 seconds, after which they invite you take the Bose "quality" challenge against the "competition" (i.e., Beats).

 

 

 

 

That both these companies are so largely successful by virtue of large and brand-loyal consumer bases for their overpriced garbage destroys my faith in humanity a little everyday.

I was in this camp... until I got one.

I don't see the big deal with using Sennheiser headphones on an iphone? I use Audio Technica canalphones and AIAIAI headphones with mine, because I like the quality, and there's no other situation where I'd need headphones other than on the way to/from or at work..

Apple standard earbuds are total shit and also leak sound like a motherfucker. every time some cunt on the tube is listening to their wanky pop music on earbuds they're forcing the entire carriage to listen to it as well and I want to punch them. If ever I see anyone with standard Apple earbuds I immediately write them off as an idiot.

They're AWESOME. I have the TMA-1x (cost me $150AU) and while they're not the most comfortable headphones I've owned (thin pads, supra-aural), the sound is amazing. Very well-defined and clear bass that can get deep as fuck without being overwhelming. They actually sound like they should cost a lot more, imo.

Yeah I've never been able to get apple earbuds to stay in either. One of these days I'll invest in something better quality than my shitty panasonics, but I've broken so many pairs at the connector, it hardly seems worth it.
