Mad Max: Fury Road

How much do I need to know about this series going In? I've never seen any of them.

It's post-apocalypse and the world is running out of oil, water, and food. Most of the survivors have turned into roaming gangs of bandit marauders with ridiculously stylized combat-repurposed vehicles. Every film involves epic car chases.

That's pmuch all you need to know.

[edit] You should totally go watch the second of the original films, "Mad Max 2" aka "The Road Warrior". It's classic 80s film insanity and you will not regret it.

nothing. you'll get the post-apocalyptic desert thing right away, because this franchise helped put those tropes out there in the first place and they have filtered through other media over the years in countless ways (e.g. Fallout). this is a legendary franchise returning to form.

edit: having said that though, to understand Max' character more, you have to see the first film. his backstory is in there.

The blu ray trilogy was £7 a few months back when I purchased it, but the savvy Amazon peeps have bumped it up a bit,.

Still a bargain though.

Apologies for double thread confusion. I put it down to to two key scenes in that movie playing over and over in mind. Still cannot believe how good that was and from a franchise that is more than thirty years old. No action flick has any business being that good.

After watching this a few hours ago at an early premiere, I thought this needed a thread of its own. You’ll feel the same once you’ve seen it. What an absolutely insane action film. Incredible stunts and mindless carnage. I was very hesitant after about a thirty year break but the Road Warrior is back.

Have no fears that this is some kind of politically correct modern update - a mindless reboot that serves as just a cash-in on the 80s classics - this shit is something else. So many beautifully choreographed set-pieces that puts the kind of shlock Michael Bay releases to shame. A raw, gritty and thoroughly engrossing piece of work that truly feels like a modern day classic.

I’m not sure Tom Hardy makes for a better Max but in every other area, this film is nigh on perfect. There is also a very good feminine political agenda that you can key into or choose to ignore - first time around you’ll probably be too in awe of the stunts to enjoy it. Loved the subtle CGI. The stunts looked so real.

Difficult to say if it’s the best action flick ever. The reason it may be is more to do with the timing of the stunts - all the action set pieces appear at perfectly logical points in the movie - they’re not simply piled one on top of each other. Also from technical aspect, I find it hard to believe that some of the stuff wasn’t CGI because it just looks too realistic to be anything else. Maybe CGI is that good now. Who knows? The Junkie XL soundtrack is okay. It reminded me continually of Brad Fiedel without the subtlety and careful nuances.

Gasoline is the most precious resource, but everyone seems to have enough to drive around the Outback like maniacs. Plus Bartertown apparently had no shortage of hair mousse. Homosexuality seems to be widely accepted.

Well if you want to go down the "realism" critique path then all the movies fall apart because why the fuck are bandits bothering to be so highly stylized in a resource-starved scenario (like wasting metal on tricking out vehicles & armor to be menacing-looking instead of making bullets)?

just got back from seeing this. Definite contender for best film of 2015. I was one of those guys that rolled their eyes when hearing about this film being in development, but I was dead wrong with my initial thoughts.

Great action film, little ridiculous-hilarious flourishes, would watch again.

But Bartertown is from Mad Max 3. And Mad Max 3 doesn't exist.

the trailer looked really good in the cinema but I've had reservations, but you guys are all lovin it so yeah thx gonna watch

I'm pretty excited to see this now, but is it really as Blue/Orange as it looks from the trailer?

i just saw the original two movies a couple years ago and holy shit usagi. you just got me so psyched to see this. i think ill have to break my rule for this one and see it opening weekend. CAN'T WAIT.

That moment when Max wakes up right after the sandstorm is so clever, only then did I realize how intense that chase scene was.

 

Proper lols with the "Witness me!" and "Praise the V8" bits

 

It's not REALLY linked to the original trilogy though is it ? What's with Max's daughter being like 10 and ran over by trucks ? Still, that arrow blocking scene was epic too.

I just wanna say how fucking cool it is that one of the most best action films of the last 15 years has been created by a man who is 70, while his younger counterparts continue to pump out bland superhero shite.

It does. There is quite a bit of subtext involving gender politics and environmental issues if you care to look for it.

But holy fuck, the stunts. This film makes 'Fast & Furious' look like 'Driving Miss Daisy'.

Lots of people can make action flicks but this single film lays waste to everything that came before it due to two things: the meticulous pacing of the set-pieces and the sheer spectacle of watching some of the most realistic stunts coupled with complete and utter mayhem unleashed before your eyes.

How incredibly violent is it? I was thinking about taking my 13 y/o kid along.

Yeah, I'm elderly.

Great fun, felt like a kid again, watching one of the old Indiana Jones movies for the first time - and the sensory overload, that's ever present in modern movies, was actually warranted for once.

I wouldn't have minded a bit more story elements though, build up the universe a bit more - since it's a great universe with a lot of character - hopefully that will happen in the potential sequel.
