I know what you mean. just hearing him say that everything is recorded live blew my mind and everything about the way I imagined he works. but he did say that he uses a lot of program changes, so each new sound doesn't necessarily mean a new synth. also, in the Syrobonkus interview he talks about sequencing/programming an EQ matrix, saying it's tedious as fuck. as I gather more and more info, it seems like it's possible, but an insane proposition for someone that's not a genius/autistic.

I have since changed the way I produce my own music, basically doing live takes as well. it is more satisfying than piecing everything together in a DAW.

absolutely, mon frere. i don't know of another piece of music im constantly swooning over to the extent this song has done me. youtube vid of live show to syro, it's an achievement in music.

ya know it's weird, xmas is not my fave track on syro either but i still think it's probably one of if not the best & most important pieces of electronic music ever recorded... i like other tracks better but they don't have the same holy aura of a master 20+ years deep into his craft combining huge beautiful analog synths with a fucking drum playing robot and zithers and gongs in a 10 minute acid masterpiece

what makes it so important?

It's long and has a lot of sounds fading in and out? I don't know, that one's never been a stand out to me, but it has some nice moments. It sounds to me like a jam piece he kept adding bits to over the years. Definitely a cool track, has a very "personal" vibe. I'd be curious to hear some alternate versions (that are more fleshed out than the one on the marchro single). There are so many ways he could have gone with the arrangement, and I suspect he tried a few different ones out before settling on the one he released.

Seems weird that Warp is posting stuff about Aisatsana a year later. Something new? Trying to boost streaming royalties?

(earth portal mix) is the late grower for me.. it recalls death fuck in its density and wealth of ideas, has a lot to chew on

the original Metz track has a heavier, darker vibe.. probably due to the reverb/venue recording. the studio version (XMAS_EVET10) feels lighter, more elegant. i almost prefer the live recording to the album version, as it's less airy, sterile

all of the elements in the mix are so dry and distinctive.. those elements are muddled somewhat in the live recording, i think that bit of muddling improves the track. it's as if the individual ingredients are better blending/interacting, producing more interesting results.

I like earth portal too, but it's so.... sloppy. (which I mean I think was on purpose but still, not my favorite.)

Just get yourself a venue and chuck it on a massive P.A. then.

i don't know, it's not often you hear electro/IDM/techno music so plastic and pliant like earth portal. it's really fluid, and yeah, it has a looseness about it. dunno if i'd call it sloppy, though

Current faves are 6 8 9. So god damn good. 4 has been particularly good too :) definitely an album that fares well over maxo relistening and time.

On anutha note, fred 6 from tuss ep has kicked in again as another favourite. I kind of got bored of it for a bit and thought it was too bare bones. Then on recent relisten that bass synth that kicks in at 2:30 and again at 2:50 came to my attention and faaaar out its almost like i wasnt even hearing it before or something. So much of the songs rhythm relies on it and it was ghost bass note but now i can hear it again. Welcome back, fred!

Right on. 4bit has always been one of my fav Syro tracks, ever since early listens. Very under appreciated.
