Guest yikes
i have to note that 90% of what has been posted in this thread is not really horror but murder porn/gore or just extreme violence on film in some form with minimal classic horror elements. sure it's horrible but not really in the classic sense of a true horror film. men behind the sun is like a documentary /reenactment based on denied and subverted historical facts and "this is a serbian film"[which i will not watch] is murder/rape porn in the truest sense. i need more films like cronenberg's golden run and jacob's ladder, all of which to me embody the real essence of modern horror. 2 films i have seen on teh last 2 years worth noting that are not murder porn: beyond the black rainbow was decent .....especially the analog synth soundtrack ,but again really fell short in it's ending/conclusion. and cronenberg's son's debut antiviral picked up where his father left off with mind bending post modern sci-fi/medical horror i hope brandon cronenberg continues in this genre as it seems his father is done with horror/sci fi at this point in his career. now what about that next david lynch film...........the new twin peaks notwithstanding Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/85996-horror-films-to-ruin-the-mind/page/4/#findComment-2261662 Share on other sites

Films that put you through the grinder, for the rush, the adaptation, and the general backwardness of the act. thanks for calling me dumb but after a reading a few reviews/synopsis I figured infant rape/torture wasn't my idea of a good time! Nor did I want to waste any of my life's minutes or being on such deplorable garbage...so yea glad i didn't see that and I think I am actually smart for not polluting my brain with such dreck. As Ken Kesey said "if it doesn't uplift the human spirit ...piss on it" and as i get older I tend to agree with captain trips more and more. For me good horror and sci fi film should be escapist not an excuse to indeed recreate snuff or simulate the absolute bottom of human depravity or suffering. Chances are if you have ever really suffered or been exposed to extreme violence "or been thru a grinder"in the real world you would have nary an appetite for this kind of "entertaintment. None the less to each their own and if that is what you seek to be entertained than who am I to differ. For me irreversible [which was given to me in a stack of other films for free by a friend who runs a dvd store] was a shaky camera filmed amateurish mess...A poorly scripted, under lit toilet clogger and basically unwatchable after the first 15 minutes. so when discussing film it's obvious opinions will vary Resorting to name calling and noting what kind of films you enjoy speaks largely of where you are at as a human being. Happy holidays and enjoy your snuff murder porn films! Guest yikes
this is the 3rd user review on imb for "this is a serbian film sounds like a good time ! This review contains spoilers - and descriptions of scenes depicted in Srpski Film. A baby is graphically birthed on screen by a large bald man. The mother lies prone, and pushes the baby out into his hands. He then takes down his underwear, and rapes the screaming newborn baby - on screen. A man is shown violently anally raping (onscreen) a young child - his own son, after he is injected with massive doses of a powerful sexual stimulant. The boy - presumably also drugged - lies face-down, bleeding profusely from his anus as the man continues a sustained sexual attack. Evidently, this is art. The thing that bothered me the most about Srpski Film isn't necessarily its use of deliberate shock, and taboo busting scenes designed to offend. It is the way in which Srdjan Spasojevic tries to cover his dubious tracks by passing it off as some kind of artistic political allegory about life in Serbia. I was aware of the fact that I was increasingly annoyed as I watched this film - mainly because the filmmakers use every trick in the book, and obviously some new ones to batter the viewer over the head with aggressive imagery, in order to make enough social fuss to draw in viewers. It doesn't necessarily make it a good film, although it is admittedly well shot, and well acted. It almost reminded me of seeing footage of beheadings on the internet. It's supposed to be profound in some way, but ultimately it is just irredeemable pain and destruction, and contains no social commentary at all. Realistic torture and extremely graphic rape scenes usually make a negative impact on the viewer, because they are horrific and unpleasant subjects. Using babies and children does not make it artistic, independent of your cultural origins - although some people claim that it is art. I saw another review of this film that evidently recognised genuine "art" in every single frame I, like some of the other reviewers - have happily watched horror and exploitation movies for years - but so what? It doesn't make any difference whatsoever. Sub-genres come and go, and the recent tide of shocking torture films are more akin to a test of the viewer's resolve, than the slices of entertainment they used to be. Fair enough - if you don't like them then don't watch. I am a film fan. I definitely love film. I just don't love this kind of film, or the thinly veiled attempts to disguise absolute exploitation as something profound. I saw a snippet of one off a mainstream news site and it really fucked with me...and I've seen a lot of these execution videos before so that's saying something. The absolute horror and brutality of the way people are slaughtering each other is incredible - I don't want to link to any of it or recommend you even skim this stuff - but it's literally is a Game of Thrones esque bloodbath over there. Actually the same could be said of Mexico for that matter. Or Ukraine. But I will say that war itself is bloody and brutal and very few outside of those involved in ground combat or as victims of conflict have any idea of this. Schlitze
I liked I Saw The Devil, ahhh, a twisted cop looking for revenge on a sadistic beast. Twas a profound meditation on the nature of revenge. It intrigues rather than 'ruins the mind'. It's hard to 'ruin the mind' with fictional horror in this day age. Many internet brutes are desensitized from gore because they are watching it on the dark web 24/7. I notice many of the more recent gory horrors these days are attempting to make a statement rather than shock for the hell of it. The horrors onscreen are only surface noise. Love them or loathe them, the titles being discussed above in this page were attempting to tap into a higher theology. Even the centipede. To ruin the mind, i think horror must go back to basics and come up with new concepts, ie. astral projection, out of body experience, going into another dimension. Yep, that's right, Insidious: Chapter 2. Theres a film which stands by it's principles and drags a mainstream audience deeper into a concept they didn't even get their head round in the first film. They just like jump scares. But yes, astral projection, alien abduction, psychosis, cults.. those are horror movie subjects that ive always thought were 1000 times more terrifying than zombies, ghosts or demons. there's so much untapped in the realm of scary movies that directors and writers could be dreaming up. instead, it seems like most just want to shock with gore, or just as bad, put out the same haunted/ghost movies over and over... and as for zombie movies, ugh, what a bore for me. so uninspired. Guest yikes
i agree with both of you guys human rape/gore etc is like a cheap punchline that is easily achieved with simple and cheap effects....raping babies/children/necrophilia/live surgery et al has to be the penultimate of a lack of creative imagination and in a way is childish. On the other hand taking a long look backwards at say carpenter's "The Thing" .....yes botin's special effects were truly amazing esp for 1980 but the true horror resided in what wasn't seen but what you were thinking in the private torture garden of your own mind.....also the ending is so fucking bleak! For me it's the unspoken stuff...the things rod serling was so adept at tapping into thru the twilight zone....fears and thoughts that are relevant to the human condition, timeless universal enigmas we all have to confront. Things which have the real power to scare, shock and provoke thought, analysis and questions about humanity, death, life, the afterlife, innate racism, extraterrestrial possibilities and or the unnamable as evidenced by lovecraft or the inexplicable fever psychedelic dream worlds lynch creates etc...
