How do you even get insurance down there?

storm is a mixed bag.. seems to have jogged south a bit after weakening. but still is flooding some places and bringing the wind. gonna be a long night for a huge part of the state.  tampa getting 10-14 inches of rain.. similar numbers of rainfall in surrounding areas.. differing storm surge in different parts of the coast.  tomorrow will tell the tale.

tampa got lucky. it went slightly south of them so they didn't get full storm surge from the oncoming winds. still a big mess, lot's of wind damage, tornados all over the state. flooding, debris etc.. it weakened enough before it hit to not be as bad as they thought it might be. lucky break.

yeah I heard it was still pretty bad, although could have been worse, but like 3 million people without power as of last night and 12 people died

i think death count is up to 16 now. water still rising from all the rain and river flooding in the super flat part of the middle of the state. will take weeks for that water to run off.

yesterday, at the grocery store, some asshole ran into my mom with their shopping cart and knocked her down.. didn't even stop to see if she was ok and kept going.. didn't turn around.. didn't say shit.  Mom is ok. she was stunned. sort of fell on her ass and hip by the sound of it. but could tell she was emotional about it. wtf. she reported it to the store but the person who ran into her disappeared.  the person didn't try to take her purse or anything like that. just rammed her and kept going. my mom is 5ft 2in tall and 79 years old. not like she's taking up lots of space in the aisle.

straight up sociopaths in the grocery store running into old ladies.  it's upsetting.

edit: in case it wasn't obvious, mom lives in south florida.

Never got the appeal of Florida tbh. My grandparents used to live in Orlando for a while. It's so goddamn humid all the time. The west coast is so much more pleasant for retirees etc as well, it also has a more varied landscape

In my opinion Miami is as batshit crazy as LA, if not more.

agreed.

the attraction of florida for retirees used to be low cost of living. no income tax in florida so if you find one of those little communities oriented towards retired life it's probably pretty good. ya don't have much drama to deal with. it's always warm. there's lot's of pools and lot's of doctors and health care systems catering to old people. but once there's drama.. like hurricanes or fires or whatever.. then all bets are off. south beach used to be called "God's waiting room" because it was 100% old people. in the 80s and 90s when gay people started changing the place it seemed every day the ambulances were taking out old people and then a gay person would buy a little apartment building and fix it up or start a small business or something.

it's a whole different thing now and of course incredibly expensive and not chill at all in most places. there's still tons of retired people dominating certain areas but i wonder how long that will last. lot's of people had their forever dreams crushed by hurricanes recently.

Yeah the weather is very scary. US weather has proven to be a bit more extreme than SA weather and definelitely more than EU weather (after staying in NL for a while one could safely classify the weather there as extremely depressing)

Cali weather is way more stable with much more varied nature, idk what the differences in costs of living are though. I never think about florida lol

florida is usually pretty boring weather. it rains a bit every day. it's always hot. winters are a joke. hurricane season is the only time to worry about weather. so it's a game of probabilities and luck. but if someone is in the right part of the state in the right time period they can be lucky and miss all the drama and have a pretty peaceful affordable life if that's what they want.

cali is way more expensive. there's income tax. florida has no income tax. cali also is just expensive in every way. property tax, insurance, cars, gas, food etc.. it's all out of reach for a lot of people and certainly people on a fixed income who just want to chillout.  cali is huge so very different weather in different places. hot dry cold windy arid lush etc.. depends on where ya go.

florida has some fucked up insurance laws. if there's a hurricane warning/watch in the state and your house gets damaged it triggers a statewide "hurricane deductible" so your deductible goes up to 5% of the value of your house.. so, this lady had tornado damage and her insurance company says her deductible is $14,000. what a garbage regulation this state has to protect shitty insurance companies at the expense of every day people.
