Vanity Fair suggests Season 2 might be leading to a Bohemian Grove plot, the only thing in the article that seems plausible to me is the Guerneville reference. That city is only on the map for 3 reasons, huge tucked away isolated gay community, giant hippy contingent and bohemian grove.

yeah that was pretty intense. but everything before was either awkward or boring (sometimes both)

I've enjoyed this season so far. It's not as good as the first one, but not as horrible as some are saying. I don't know if people expected it to be the same as the first one, but this seems to go for a different vibe. The existential dread is still there, but now in an urban environment. The characters are more broken and I think having so many main characters is also causing a different dynamic than the duo of Cohle & Hart did. And that might be what is off-putting people who expected more of the same as season one.

That's a pretty good articulation of my thoughts. Especially the characters being all broken.

yes, and i forgot teddy bear's picnic didn't actually call it bohemian grove either. In the newest episode they dropped another possible hint about 'parties' with prostitutes 'up north' , and in california lingo someone from LA wouldn't describe san francisco or say oakland as 'up north' they would say the bay area, this is again another reference to upper northern california . in a way the whole theme would fit perfectly with season 1. for those who don't know about the yearly event at bohemian grove. they perform a mock human sacrifice ritual/play in front of a giant stone owl. at various points media has exposed possible exotic/expensive prostitute groups being flown in including gay porn stars.

also Bohemian grove is legendary for bringing more artistic old school hippy elites in the bay area together with more conservative / corporate types. For example Alexander / Sasha shulgin famously was a member of the grove and even played in their orchestra, an orchestra probably watched many times by other members including Henry Kissinger, George W Bush and Ted turner. Harry Shear was also a member of the grove which is why he probably made that sort of dumb movie about it

Jon Ronson talked at length about that on a J.R.E podcast not long ago, when he'd snuck into bohemian grove that same year. His whole take on the thing might be far less entertaining than Alex's, but I liked some of his thoughts on the twisted psychology behind it

the funniest part is that Ronson was taking an outsider analytical approach, he didn't admit he snuck in with alex until many years later out of fear that the people in Bohemian Grove could actually fuck up his life (he didn't spell it out this way but thats basically why he hid it)

I fucking love the Ronson video special with Alex Jones, its one of the most interesting takes on AJ i've seen short of the indie film 'new world order' you basically get to see how he is when he's not in that performative mode, and even while hes being normal he's still operating on a level of mania thats very interesting to watch. The part at the very end of the special where AJ is driving and not looking at the road is amazing he yells at ronson "YOU CAN NERVE GAS US ALL DAY, WERE READY TO ROCK" ending with the line "IM GONNA SHOVE A GUN IN THEIR MOUTH TO SEE HOW THEY LIKE IT CAUSE IM FREE!!"

but the whole thing is worth watching, really good shit imo

i've just came to the conclusion that vince vaughn is one of the weakest parts of true detective season 2. that and A LOT of the writing. that's all

Everyone seems to hate him but I find him to be the most interesting character this season. I think he's gonna end up being the one pushing to solve the murder investigation hardest after the assorted city officials & police depts attempt to bury it.

I think the writing is more to blame than anything else. Vaughn has grown on me in this role, I've stopped expecting him to make a deadpan wisecrack. But some of the lines the writers have come up with this season have been enough to make apoplectic.

Yeah the writing has been poor. Each episode i watch i hope the script will get better, i dunno, i appreciate they're trying to do something different so I'm not turning my back on it at all The acting has been awesome with Farrell as the (un)predictable burn out, Vaughn doing boring (outside fluff comedy) and Kitsch & McAdams masking their sexual perversions until the finale.

It's unpredictable, so I reserve judgement.
