Japan's Henn na Hotel features all robot check-in counter and robot assistants in every room (small talking bots that operate things in the room through wi-fi or bluetooth I imagine)

I do think that automation is a positive step in many ways, but like it has been stated before - there is a social responsibility here. Not everyone is raised well, educated, thirsty for knowledge, or even pushed towards success. That's a fact. But, I don't think we should start cutting lower-wage jobs for getting a hand up to support a ludicrous bottom line for some of these companies. Because let's face it. That's what it is. Slight price increase for the product and a possible loss of a smidgin of total profit, so that people you employ can eat or save up for something they work their days away for.

It'd be one thing if a company said 'Let's give this low level dude more responsibility and compensate him as he rises to the occasion - robots can run the counter'. But that's not the case it's come down to 'I can't afford to pay people a wage that is above keeping an Adult out of poverty, while also keeping a 6 to 7 figure income for the top 1% of employees... so fuck that, robots it is - thanks Obama'

I remember as a kid, I was barely able to get a job in my hometown because there were so many college/early20's age kids that were taking Subway jobs. I had to scrap to get a dishwasher job at 15 and humped my ass off for less than 13$ and hour working my way into some of the most highly rated restaurants in this part of the country. Even there I never made more than 16$ and hour. That opportunity probably isn't even there for a kid that was that age now. I quit kitchens because for my work - I got paid shit. I'm in a place where I'm prosperous and lucky to be here. Literally it was the luck of the draw that put me where I am and I have risen up to the tasks given to me so that I can continue to keep my lucky break. So while on one hand, I do see some of the 'economic' strife that comes with raising wages on a low level job to keep up with cost of living... But on the other - I know that if I was in a position where I was unable to find a job and being replaced by robots because my menial expenditure to a companies bottom line, I'd be pretty defeated and sad. Not too much self worth in being told over and over again you should 'work harder' or 'just go get a degree' when we all know well and full that at least in the USA, that isn't what makes success and it's a bumptious stance to take IMO. I think a lot of people like that have never really toiled, or if they did, have forgotten what it's like or rationalized some reason as to why they are different.

I do realize I'm taking it a little too far, but as a society we have a responsibility to make sure even fast food workers can be compensated above poverty and have job security. It's like the saying 'your team is only as good as its weakest member'. It's just as true here IMO. It's just as pathetic to have a basketball player on your team that you constantly rag on, can't afford a team jersey, make them take the bus when they could carpool. What the fuck about that would make you want to participate in that game either? Give that dude a ride, show him how to shoot and make your whole team better. (end really oversimplified metaphor for humans and compassion over $ and 'self preservation')

But I guess if I could swap my weakest team member with a decent robot... :emotawesomepm9:

Then again perhaps drillkicker' wit is even drier than mine, in which case I retract my post and chuckle along with him.

I have to remember to set my sarcasm detector to 'British' and a slight notch up to 'Australian' before I come on here. Otherwise it all goes over my dumb American head.

Yeah well, set your notch even higher audio, not just Australian but Queenslander and not just Queenslander but North Queenslander from the dry tropics. Nice post btw, good insight.

aren't they like world famous for their cheese steaks?

Yeah but its totally a tourist trap. They're just charging you $10 for 50 cents worth of chipsteak & cheez wiz on a roll. There's about 2 dozen better places to get a high quality, reasonably priced elongated meat sandwich in Philly.

My current job could be even more automated, but I still have tons of shit to do.

Stay hungry. The hustle never stops...

I don't know, I've just gotten into a bad habit of not thinking at all before I say or write certain things. I haven't cared about anything in a long time, so I guess that's why. Not that it's a bad thing; I'm much more emotionally stable when I don't care about anything.
